We rolled Miss Hope’s childhood piano back into place this evening, after having the wood porch floor scraped and painted. I realize a lot of folks don’t understand why I keep her piano the previous owner discarded on to the porch with the goal of completely disposing of it - and that’s okay. But wouldn’t it be something - your mama’s long ago childhood home and the current owners found a trinket she loved and they kept it with the house? Because the new home owners not only love their new old house … but they also adore the memories, hopes and dreams of all the people it provided shelter to and whom called it home. Miss Hope occasionally drives by on her way to the cemetery to visit loved ones passed on. She glances over and she sees the piano of her youth decorated and appreciated. It’s May Day! Time to flip through Hollyhock House’s first (but hopefully not last) #ALINEZINE! This spiffy little #zine was concocted by one of our crafty staff members to celebrate the friendship between Aline Barnsdall and the anarchist political activist Emma Goldman on this holiday commemorating workers of the world. Goldman is featured on the front cover. Within the folding pages is this quote from Goldman, excerpted from her 1931 autobiography, Living My Life: “At the International Socialist Congress held in Paris in 1889 the decision had been made to turn the first of May into a world-wide holiday of labour. The idea caught the imagination of the progressive workers in every land. The birth of spring was to mark the reawakening of the masses to new efforts for emancipation. In this year, 1891, the decision of the Congress was to find wide application. On the first of May the toilers were to lay down their tools, stop their machines, leave the factories and mines. In festive attire they were to demonstrate with their banners, marching to the inspiring strains of revolutionary music and song. Everywhere meetings were to take place to articulate the aspirations of labor.” Other radical themes touched on in this zine are Barnsdall’s support for jailed labor leader Tom Mooney (pardoned in 1939) and the infamous political billboards she had placed around Olive Hill, many of which addressed socialist causes & ideas. This house in Wethersfield, Connecticut was built in 1783 as the home of Samuel and Abigail Woodhouse. Samuel had served as a soldier in the American Revolution, and he was also a shipbuilder and a sailor. This large brick house reflected his wealth, at a time when the majority of houses were built of wood. The top photo was taken around the late 1930s, and the bottom photo in 2024. It has seen some restoration work over the years, including the removal of the 19th century shutters and windows, and the installation of 18th century-style 12-over-12 windows. It stands as a good example of late Georgian-style architecture, and it is one of the many historic 18th century homes here in Wethersfield. Day 9: we didn't expect to be doing so much garden work this day - but as it was so sunny who could resist. We all got a bit chop happy, but ended up removing so much ivy and cutting back the trees so sunlight could get to the back of the cottage. We finished painting the lounge, replaced some missing floorboards, made a stair bullnose (beautifully cut in to avoid damaging original floorboards.) Electrician in and starting to add some plug sockets to the kitchen, putting the wiring in for the oven and hob. We are having exploded cabling to the wires to avoid the trunking, as it wouldn't be fitting, and all the cables have to run along the beams not cut through them. We cleared some of the front and found the ground spike. Special shout to @katiefagg_ who found a path and her calling. 😂 Thanks to dad and Deano's mum also did an amazing job! Day 10: The carpet fitted in our bedroom, the electrician updated the fuse box. Mum and D did a whole load of rubbish removal and tip run, to get rid of the plaster and garden waste we created over the last few days. We cleaned half the flagstones in the lounge from what looks like 50 years worth of dirt. Went to collect some furniture from the other house - moving stuff over slowly! We brought the mattress for our first night in the cottage! 🌌 I can't wait to bring cutie pie over. She's going to love the garden. 😁😻 #houserenovation #cottagecore #cottage #historichouse

Condition assessing this gorgeous stump work casket today @penshurstplace where it is on display in the Queen Elizabeth room. We are currently part way through condition checking all the textiles at Penshurst Place to inform their conservation planning moving forwards. The casket has a wonderful range of vegetables, flowers, insects, snails and birds ranging over each of its sides and top. It must have been glorious when first made with polychrome silks, gold and silver threads all glinting in the candlelight. Sadly much of the face of the crimson satin has disappeared now and the metal elements are heavily tarnished but it could be much improved with careful surface cleaning and reattachment of loose threads, braids and lifting 3d elements. Inside are a series of drawers lined with marbled papers including several that I couldn’t open - I wonder if there are any secret compartments? Often these caskets go have hidden inner spaces for concealing one’s private things. We’ve been working in front of the visitors these last two days undertaking #conservationinaction chatting about textile conservation and the role condition assessments play in caring for historic houses. I love talking to visitors about our work and adding something more to their visit. It’s also been a complete pleasure getting to know some of the wonderful team at Penshurst and learning more about the history of this extraordinary property. A walk tonight and on the Benenden Road in Rolvenden, you find the magnificent Saxby house circa 1390 and the adjacent 19th century oast houses. Both listed a wonderful group with open fields opposite which complete the setting. Not overshadowed by nasty modern development. In the field opposite cows, lots of birds eating something and a Kestrel hunting and being rather successful. Q: What if I want or need early check in or late check out? A: Let us know ahead of time and we will do our best to accommodate. Q: Will there be staff onsite to assist with check in? A: We have an Innkeeper staff member onsite daily from 8am-4pm. On day of check in, prior to your arrival you will receive a text message with instructions on how to check in. This will include the code for the main entry door and further instructions with regard to your room access. Q: Why is there no staff onsite at night? A: We are like an Airbnb but without the exorbitant fees. And we don't like to hover around. Make yourself at home. Q: What if I need something after hours such as an additional pillow or blanket? Just a little something about us! 💙 Throughout our marriage, my husband J.R. and I shared a love of old houses and old things! We lived in several old houses, and we went to antique stores, auctions, yard sales and flea markets often to find treasures! We carefully picked out antiques that we wanted to enjoy using daily, and love seeing every morning and every night. Some of our antique furniture we were fortunate to have passed down to us from both of our families. We always said that we couldn't take them with us when we go, but that we hoped our six kids would enjoy some of our antique "trusty old friends" when we were gone! Continuing on with the story of Elmwood. Yesterday wrote about the 18th century history of the house. Today it’s all about James Russell Lowell. He was a popular author and thinker of the 19th century who was born in the house in 1818 a year after it was bought by his parents Charles Russell Lowell and Harriet Spence Lowell. Lowell Sr. was a Unitarian minister often speaking on stage with Frederick Douglass. James Russell Lowell, their son, spent most of his long life at Elmwood and even gave the estate its name. In the 1850s he began to teach at Harvard, already a well known poet and essayist. He took over Longfellow’s teaching. Lowell was the first editor of the Atlantic Monthly and Elmwood became a stop on the literary map, often visiting with Longfellow on the same day. Lowell was not a wealthy man. Elmwood was a huge property to keep up. He sold some of the 30 or so acres that surrounded the house to keep his family financially afloat. He was married first to Maria, a poet. She died in 1853. Then he married Frances Dunlap, the governess to his children. James Russell Lowell never really saw his popularity decline during his lifetime. He was friends with Robert Browning, Tennyson and Leslie Stephen (in one of the photos you’ll see Leslie Stephen with Lowell) Stephen was the father of both Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell and when Virginia was born in 1882 Lowell became her Godfather. He was serving as Ambassador to Great Britain during the first half of the 1880s, after serving in the same post in Spain. Lowell was a rather well known literary translator and essayist on writing. He was popular in England and after his death a memorial sculpture was placed in Westminster Abbey. Elmwood was always his home base, even though it continued to be a financial drain. When in Europe it was often rented out to the violinist Ole Bull. He was a popular musician in Boston and throughout Europe. When Lowell died in 1892 he was buried at Mount Auburn, just across the fields from Elmwood.
