After disaster, many folks ask us how they can help. Our response? Give. Act. Pray. Give money to PDA’s Designated Disaster Funds or to other trusted organizations. Act when invited by the community to offer volunteer assistance with cleanup and rebuilding efforts. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance has been in communication with partners in Taiwan in addition to Presbyterian World Mission regional staff to discuss current needs and resources to support a response to the 7.4 magnitude earthquake that hit Taiwan. We give thanks that Taiwan invested in resilient infrastructure; without it, the damage of this earthquake would have been much more extensive. We join our siblings in the Presbyterian Church in Taiwan in mourning the lives lost and praying for those who are injured. At this time, the needs are still being assessed to see how we can best assist. Host Site Spotlight: Pines Presbyterian Church in Houston, TX @pineshouston In August of 2017, Houston, Texas was inundated with over 25 inches of rain within a 36-hour period due to Hurricane Harvey. Entire communities were under water, necessitating mass evacuations of homes and neighborhoods. Homes, businesses, vehicles, and roads along with personal belongings were destroyed. 31 families at Pines Presbyterian Church were displaced. In response, Pines became a shelter for various teams who came to Houston to assist in the aftermath of Harvey. Ever since they’ve been hosting volunteer work teams to assist in the ongoing hurricane recovery efforts. Believe it or not, there are still folks who haven’t returned to their homes since the storm! Worship featured hymns, prayers, poems, and photos from a recent solidarity visit to Maui. Our Advent Mission Campaign – "Emmanuel’s Heart: Humanity in Action" – focuses on three nonprofit organizations: RIP Medical Debt has eliminated nearly $10.4 billion in medical debt for more than 7 million families since it was founded in 2014 by two debt collection executives who wanted to make a difference. But there’s still a long way to go. Every day, 1 in 2 Americans choose between paying medical bills and covering basic needs. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) is working with partners on the ground to provide humanitarian assistance in Israel and Palestine, including medical supplies, shelter, WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene), food and non-food items, mental health and psychosocial support, and more. Social Service Association (SSA) of Ridgewood and Vicinity, a food security organization, distributes gift cards, toys and other holiday items to families with school-aged children who otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford presents. Today our Youth Mission Team had to repair some damaged areas before they could finish hanging the new siding so they've had some good carpentry experiences and learning lessons. The extra work means they may not see the siding completed before they must leave, but our dedicated team is putting forth a valiant effort. One Great Hour of sharing supports three life-saving programs: One is the Presbyterian Hunger Program. Here is a little bit about this program: We recognize hunger as an extremely complex phenomenon with economic, political, environmental and social causes, and we work to address the “root causes” that keep people hungry and impoverished. Working in partnership in the United States and around the world, we seek to find out why people are hungry and encourage action that will help address the underlying causes. "The scale of the disaster facing Syria and Turkey after the Feb. 6 earthquake is becoming clearer. The 7.8-magnitude quake and its aftershocks have left more than 11,000 people dead and thousands more injured; these numbers will rise as search and rescue continues. Buildings have been reduced to rubble, and roads and bridges have been severely damaged, resulting in dangerous conditions for first responders. In some places, such as Aleppo, this destruction is compounding the damage of the now 11-year war in Syria. Presbyterian Disaster Assistance (PDA) is providing emergency relief and short-term recovery in the impacted areas through long-standing partners in Syria, in addition to ACT Alliance members in Syria and Turkey, all of whom are already on the ground.
