Meet Dollie our beautiful cavapoo! This was the day we got her,April 2023. We decided we should introduce a dog into our lives to enrich it and to support our children. A home is not a home without a pet! Research from the University of Lincoln found that autistic children experience fewer meltdowns in the presence of a pet dog and their parents stress levels are significantly lowered, we also see that dogs can make a difference to confidence levels, help reduce anxiety, improve communication and help families to bond and bring them together. She has changed our lives and brings so much joy and happiness as well as being the cheekiest little girl! She steals our socks and our hair bands, she barks at everyone walking by the house, she loves attention, she’s so spoilt, she’s a diva and she needs training! But guess what…she gets away with murder and she will forever! The love we have for her is immeasurable. Freddie adores her and when he’s having a bad day she just knows and sits with him! Thank the lord it’s Saturday! What a week it’s been. We’ve only made it into school 2 days and those days were tough! On the days off we focused on his feelings and helped support the way he deals with his emotions by exploring what he was good at, his qualities and celebrated his achievements! Nothing can ever stop us from pushing forward. I really do have the best friends around me, they don’t pretend to know what’s happening with me and they can’t pretend to relate! It can be lonely sometimes and without their check ins and messages I think I would go insane. Wow, så var der pludselig gået 3 måneder, siden jeg sidst har forfattet noget 🐢 Problemet har ikke været lysten, eller at der ikke har været noget at berette. Nok nærmere det modsatte. Tankerne har været mange, og i alverdens afskygninger. Jeg har skrevet et utal af indlæg, dog er fællesnævneren, at de aldrig nåede længere end mine tanker. Tiden siden sidst, har været præget af store beslutninger, ny viden, frustrationer, glæde og håb. I dag, vil jeg holde mig til den ting som fylder mest for tiden; Vi har købt nyt hus, og solgt vores nuværende. . Vores helt igennem idylliske perle. Vores paradis. Stedet hvor 2 af vores børn er født. Stedet så fyldt med minder, på hver en millimeter. Maximillians fristed. Han er nok den som er mest knyttet til huset, og alt hvad det betyder. Han kender hver en afkrog, og ved hvordan hver en overflade føles og fører hen. Han er sønderknust. Sådan, helt dybt inde og så man ikke er i tvivl. Når det nye hus bliver nævnt af nogen, bliver han nonverbal i flere timer, og gemmer sig under sit velkendte tæppe. Og jeg kan godt forstå ham. For det er da også brutalt, at skulle flytte fra sit aller tryggeste sted, uden mulighed for at nedlægge VETO imod det. Om 4 dage får vi nøglerne til det nye hus. Om 2 måneder skal vi være ude af der hvor vi bor nu. Vi flytter kun 500m. væk og bor stadig ved den samme sø og skov. Men huset er anderledes. Lugtene er anderledes. Lyset falder anderledes i stuen, og gulvene knirker på en anden måde. Vi har truffet den umulige beslutning, da vi ved at det på sigt er bedst for vores familie. Pladsen her i perlen, er simpelthen blevet for lille, efter vi er blevet større. Men selvom min hjerne ved at det er den rigtige beslutning, er mit hjerte fyldt med tvivl. {Sunflowers} First time wearing their sunflower lanyards today from @hiddendisabilities_anz as we head to see @marvelontour in Adelaide. The staff at the @adelaideentertainmentcentre have been amazing at helping us have some supports and areas to go too should either boy get overwhelmed by all the excitement. While a designated sensory space hasn’t been created, every team member we’ve spoken to has shown great enthusiasm for there to be one in the future. Auch ich möchte @stephanie_meer_walter unterstützen und dazu beitragen, dass mehr über Autist*innen in der Schule erfahren wird. Hier also unser 1. Bericht über die Grundschulzeit. Im Jahr 2012 wird der Timo eingeschult. Obwohl er in der Kita bereits eine Stützkraft hatte, lehnte die Schule dies ab. Schon bald war er überfordert und zeigte Stereotypien: Umherlaufen, Geräusche machen... Die Lehrerin rügt ihn, fordert Konsequenzen, die Belastung wird größer. Der Timo wird geärgert, erfährt Gewalt, hat Angst. Gespräche mit der Lehrerin helfen nicht: das stimme nicht, so etwas würden diese Kinder nie tun. Er, der seit dem 3. LJ trocken ist, beginnt einzunässen, hat Bauchweh, möchte nicht zur Schule. Ende der 1. Klasse sind die Lehrkräfte "am Ende", so dass nun ein Fördergutachten erstellt werden soll. Sozialemotionaler Förderbedarf, heißt es nun, und er solle unbedingt eine ganztägige Schulassistenz bekommen... Bewilligt werden 10,5 Stunden pro Woche. Nach den Sommerferien will der Timo nicht mehr in die Schule. Aber wir haben ja Schulpflicht... Ein Meltdown führt zu einer 11-wöchigen Suspendierung - obwohl er längst krankgeschrieben ist. Es beginnt die erste Runde Homeschooling... Es folgen Diagnostik, ein desaströser Tagesklinikaufenthalt mit völlig unvermittelter Entlassung. Die ihm für die dritte Klasse zugewiesene Schule will ihn nicht haben, suspendiert ihn prophylaktisch und meldet dem JA eine Kindeswohlgefährdung (die natürlich im Hausbesuch sofort als nicht existent bewertet wird). Ich schalte den Mobilen Sonderpädagogischen Dienst für Autismus ein. Ein Beschulungskonzept wird erarbeitet. Die Umsetzung erfolgt jedoch anders als besprochen... Der Timo darf die Schule nur mit Assistenz betreten, er muss permanent begleitet werden, darf nicht in die Pause... Ein achtjähriges Kind! Bewilligt wird vom Amt eine Assistenz für 5 (!) Stunden pro Woche! Der Timo muss im Nebenraum sitzen, Lehrkräfte verweigern, zu ihm zu gehen... Ist es ein Wunder, dass er krank wird? Ich lasse ein Attest ausstellen und beschule ihn wieder zu Hause... Grundschule lief schon mal nicht... #schulaut #pda #autismus #schule #inklusion #teilhabe

Das Paar ist geschockt und besorgt. Bereits am nächsten Tag treffen sie die Spezialisten der Charite. Der Ultraschall zeigt keine Auffälligkeiten. Es wird eine Fruchtwasseruntersuchung durchgeführt. Tapfer und hoffnungsvoll erwarten die Eltern das Ergebnis. Nach eine Woche endlich die Erlösung: mit 99%iger Sicherheit hat sich das Baby nicht angesteckt. Die Freude und Erleichterung sind groß. Doch sie währen nur kurz. Im Rahmen einer genetischen Beratung kommt der Verdacht auf ein Angelman-Syndrom auf. Die Untersuchungen und Tests laufen. Wieder heißt es warten und bangen. Das Paar meistert diese mental herausfordernden Wochen großartig. Sie bewahren Ruhe und verlieren nie ihre gute Hoffnung. Ein zweites Mal bekommen sie fantastische Nachrichten: trotz ihrer genetischen Besonderheit ist ihre Tochter kerngesund. Kaum ist der ganze Stress vorbei, erledigt sich auch die Cervixverkürzung ganz von selbst. Jetzt darf die Zeit der Vorfreude und der Geburtsvorbereitung beginnen. Finn kam nach vielen Stunden kräftezehrender Geburtsarbeit aufgrund einer Fehleinstellung via Bauchgeburt in Vollnarkose zur Welt. Das Wochenbett und die Zeit danach waren aus vielerlei Gründen körperlich und emotional sehr anstrengend und belastend. Sie wünscht sich eine vaginale Geburt und glaubt gleichzeitig nicht daran, dass es gelingen wird. Mit ihren Hebammen und der Geburtsklinik bespricht sie ihre Wünsche für beide Versionen. Egal, ob im Kreißsaal oder im OP, dieses Mal soll es anders werden. Anfang November, wenige Tage vor dem ET. Es ist ihr Geburtstag. Am späten Nachmittag fühlt sie sich unwohl. Der untere Rücken schmerzt. Sie nimmt rhythmisch, alle 10 Minuten, einen Druck wahr. Mit einer Wärmflasche legt sie sich ins Bett. Wenige Stunden später ruft er an. Die letzten zwei Kontraktionen kamen mit drei Minuten Abstand. Die Hebamme hört die Frau im Hintergrund konzentriert atmen. Die Schwangere hat damit gerechnet, dass es schnell mehr wird. How can parents help when their children are so distressed that everything seems too much? Some children and young people seem to withdraw from life. Their anxiety becomes so severe that anything which might have helped seemed to make things worse. They may find it hard to come out of the bedrooms or to leave the house. Parents are left not knowing what to do next. This Monday I am hosting a webinar about Helping Your Child With Severe Anxiety. It will use the lens of Polyvagal theory (Stephen Porges) to understand what is going on for these young people, and will include practical ways in which parents can help themselves and their children. I'm using this lens because it is so accessible. You'll leave with a new way to think about what is happening, and some things to try.
