Just remembering the time in 2017 when Hurricane Maria tore through the Caribbean while I was in the Dominican Republic. I was very lucky not to be overly affected by it. Unfortunately many others werent. We were all put on an alert by the resort who kept sliding instructions under the door of the rooms. I had to pack an emergency bag ready for a potential evacuation. I was also told to take everything off the balcony and remain in my room for further instructions. Some post #hurricanemaria flag art. First one is made from bamboo that washes ashore certain times of the year. Front in original colors, back side done in black and white, a symbol of resistance to the colonial status of the island. One of the slides shows an idea I had during the extended power outages after Maria. Glue glow in the dark stars to a rope or string. Charge during the day and put them in dark corners or stairs at night. Ben & Jerry’s Cafe menu. @benandjerryspr is the only #benandjerrys shop licensed to sell food. The kitchen did close after #hurricaneMaria, however, the last iteration of the menu was a thing of beauty. Santa Rita Proyecto en Rio Piedras, San Juan Puerto Rico 🇵🇷 . Back story. My mother survived #HurricaneMaria and the #pandemic helping the community in Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico. It’s a small university town filled with artists, students, professionals and young entrepreneurs. It has a young raw artistic vibrant energy that I fell in love with as my mother grew closer to the community. . The aftermath of two natural disasters to an island that has been historically ignored by the US government and left to fend for itself was difficult to watch but worse for my mother to live through. I always questioned why she chose to stay in a place so difficult to survive in. But if you know her, you know @proyecto_memoria_historica es Boricua to the core, tougher than nails and deeply connected to her island’s people, culture and history. . #SantaRita is a neighborhood within #RioPiedras, #SanJuan, that used to be a thriving upperclass area. Huge beautiful homes built by famous architects are scattered throughout the neighborhood but the disasters took an apocalyptic toll to this once prestigious area. However the resilience of a community surviving deep trauma together can result in pure magic, casting an unseen light within us allowing everything and everyone to heal✨ . Amidst the pandemic, my mother found a historical building and purchased an apartment within it. It’s a beautiful colonial multi-family Spanish villa that was once a dormitory for girls. With 14’ tall ceilings, arched hallways, cast iron entrances, tons of natural light, vintage tiling from the 40’s and antique sinks it was hard not to fall in love with its storybook class and charm. The neighborhood, building, and community instantly presented us with a purpose: to help Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico thrive again. . Almost 3 years after purchasing the last vacant apartment, this historical building es VIVO! But with the romance also came enemies, and after almost 20 court cases the last apartment remodel is finished and I’ve taken on the building’s accounting to help maintain its historical structure. I truly believe within 3 years it will be one of the most beautiful buildings in all of Puerto Rico🇵🇷✊🏽❤️

During Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico we saved this men life from being trapped in his home where it collapsed, when we found him he had no food, no family and living in a very sad situation we was able to get him from underneath from all that has fallen in the midst of a situation that even the news in Puerto Rico did a report on this. Pickete as he was affectionate known will not listen to anyone to be removed from the only place he called home” his shattered home “after talking with him he said “ I will leave with you Jessie” and we was able to take him him to a safe place and was able to insure him with all that he needed to be taken care of. Today I am so sad to share this news Pickete has passed away! This men thought me something that I could never forget he thought me resilient something that we often forget! What is data? I’ve worked with data over 20 years now and I still don’t quite know how to answer this. Something happens when you lift numbers off a spreadsheet and turn it into something tactile, visual or audible. Something also happens when you allow data to build its own metaphor, driven by the human experiences it is connected to. But is it in the end still data? Does it matter? I think it does. But I fight the numbers sometimes because without connecting them somehow to the messy reality they are a part of, they remain just that. Numbers on a sheet of paper. A Storm Within A Storm is a piece that talks about Hurricane Maria and the messy aftermath of the recovery efforts to help Puerto Rico rebuild. My first completed mosaic work of 2024. ✅ I started this mosaic last summer of 2023. In an effort to organize my studio and art supply closet, I stumbled upon a large surplus of foraged terracotta and crushed window glass - debris saved from the damage of Hurricane 🌀 María in 2017. Around the same time, The Chicago Mosaic School @chicagomosaicschool had organized a gallery show named “Redux” in which mosaic artists from all over could showcase their work taking a mosaic from early in their career alongside a recent mosaic, in some cases a new copy of the old work but with application of skills learned over many years of practice and study. 🎨 While I did not plan to enter the show, I was surely inspired by it. I suppose I had to create another version of Hurricane María in mosaic form. My first was finished in 2018 and I have included a photo for comparison. 😃 She left a powerful impact on my life. Here is another go at it but with an altered design and some change in material choices - crushed window glass, italian smalti, custom glass by @lisaboninglass and a more profound piece of round blue seaglass found on the shores of PR. 🇵🇷 I have found a beautiful calm in mosaic spiraling and line-splitting. Although “simple” (not so simple to create), it gives great movement to the work. I’d love to hear your thoughts and feedback on this new work and how it compares to my first “Hurricane María” mosaic. We are gearing up for @collectartfair where we will be showing works by Charles Burnand Gallery artist @reynoldrodz Reynold Rodriguez’s work “Treesome’ explores many facets at once, sometimes fusing the aesthetic and formal with the personal and introspective to a point where he sometimes feels there is little difference between them. It is a carving made from mahogany trunks collected after Hurricane Maria; the piece explores the aspect of natural form, but also re-interpret a piece of our mindsets in the aftermath of the Hurricane. He studied the forms of the collected raw material, and attempted to infuse a sense of how the hurricane affected our lives in the long months that followed, and how lives are so often irreparably disrupted by catastrophe. The process of carving these followed a long observation of the trunks in our studios for months, until the time was right to intervene and create the most authentic form that could naturally evolve from the original piece. Our curious third graders delved deep into the vibrant aspects of Latin culture, unraveling the rich tapestry of traditions and history. 🇵🇷✨ Our exploration took an insightful turn as we discussed Puerto Rico’s unique status, drawing parallels with DC, and weaving in learnings from our Extreme Weather unit. The students discovered the impact of Hurricane Maria on Puerto Rico, understanding the lasting effects even five years after the catastrophe. 🌪️💔 Applying their knowledge of extreme weather, our young minds transformed into engineers, architects, and builders - the roles they hold in our math groups. They used creativity and teamwork to design neighborhoods they believed could withstand a Category 5 hurricane. 🏗️👷♀️They showed their knowledge of multiplication by making arrays and writing story problems. They also explained what they put in their new Puerto Rican sustainable neighborhood and why. Their models were more than just structures; they were testaments to resilience and ingenuity. Who are we without our memories? That’s the question Puerto Rican author Esmeralda Santiago asks in her latest book, Las Madres. The story centers on 15-year-old Luz in Puerto Rico in 1975 who suffers a a traumatic brain injury that leads to memory loss. The timeline jumps between then and 2017 in the Bronx with Luz as a mother to Marysol who, along with close family friends Ada and Shirley and their daughter Graciela, as they take a trip to the island right as Hurricane Maria strikes. Throughout the novel, Luz’s real-life contrasts with her lack of memories and as truths are revealed las madres and hijas are in survival mode as Maria batters la isla. This novel marks her return after nearly 20 years since her last book was released. Santiago rose to fame in with her memoir When I was Puerto Rican (1993) about her childhood in Puerto Rico which became the first in a trilogy of memoirs that includes Almost a Woman (1998), and The Turkish Lover (2004).
