Hard Light: A look behind one of my favorite shoots of the year (so far) with Twin Temple @twintemple for the cover of Outburn at @monarchstudiosla . For this set I used a @profoto B10plus with and with out the scarlet filter from below to get that great horror lighting from below and those amazing shadows which MADE these shots what they are. In photos, shadows are as important as light, so knowing how to get them to do what you want is vital. That hard directional lighting led to my favorite set of this shoot. I was first drawn to photography in the mid 1980’s, mainly due to the vibrant magazines I saw in grocery store checkout lines along with the large magazine sections in many stores at the time. I remember being drawn by the images I saw in Life magazine, Sports Illustrated, National Geographic, and the fashion magazines. At the time, I did take a few photography classes, and the schools typically loaned out Pentax K1000 cameras for us to use along with BW Kodak Tri-X or Tmax film. The world for many of us students of photography was in monotone only, for the most part. The reason for this was because we would process and develop the rolls of film and do the printing ourselves. Shooting color was out of our realm. Sure, we could send in color film out to labs, but the cost was high, and to get the ultimate quality of color, positive slide film was the way to go. However, shooting on color slide film was not was easy as it may seem. Even seasoned pros would shoot color slide film with a lot of planning, and use every bit of experience and skill just to make sure their exposures were correct. So, needless to say, for a young photographer like myself at the time, shooting color slide film was not a real option. In the 1990’s, I started using color slide film quite extensively. I mainly photographed people and dabbled in fashion photography, and landscapes. I remember the excitement of getting my rolls of film back from the photo lab and viewing the images on a light table. The colors produced by color slide film is something that has been ingrained in me ever since. I especially loved Kodachrome film, because the color red popped out best of all. I normally have clients send me what they are planning on wearing for their sessions. When @amalou1082 sent me @kaitlynncamp06’s dress I knew it wouldn’t work in our regular senior style setting. I asked them to trust me with a vision I had (and they did). Never in all my time as a professional photographer has the final product so perfectly matched my initial vision. That being said, it didn’t come easy. There was a whole lot of moving and changing and twisting lights and turning Kaitlynn. I can’t say enough what a trooper she was.
