Last week, I made my annual visit to Great Smoky Mountains National Park with another group of enthusiastic photographers. Despite a week of very early mornings, long days with lots of driving, and bear jams, we all came away impressed, inspired, and happy for the experience. The Smoky Mountains are beautiful during every season, but springtime is my favorite. Everywhere in the park is lush with flowing water, colorful wildflowers, active wildlife, and a strong sense of nature's beauty and strength. Every aspect of it is tangible and captivating. But there is more. Since my first visit a decade ago, I have embraced spring in the Smoky's as a nature photographer's paradise. There are several "must-see" locations throughout the park, but some resonate more profoundly with me than others. They resonate for what is felt; not seen. Roaring Fork Nature Trail is such a place. The gently flowing brook cascades over thousands of moss-covered rocks, past hundreds of enormous rhododendron bushes, and under countless trees. Each time I am here, immersed in the sights and sounds of nature, I feel this small brook breathes life into everything it touches. That includes me. ARCHES My first time visiting Arches National Park on a recent trip to Moab. Couldn’t have asked for better conditions, clear skies and good seeing. This trip was all about testing new gear and technique as I’ve been wanting to get into full arch tracked and stacked Milky Way panos. First time running my new Canon R6ll and it’s an impressive camera. I did shoot a filtered Ha layer but it didn’t come out (user error) so I’ll have to try that again on my next trip. Die Goldammer (Emberiza citrinella) macht ihrem Namen alle Ehre. Die kleinen gelb-goldenen Singvögel sind wunderschöne Farbtupfer in der Landschaft und bereichern ihre Umgebung außerdem mit ihrem hohen, lieblichen Gesang. Goldammern haben sich an unsere menschengemachten Kulturlandschaften angepasst und sind daher auch vom Erhalt dieser Landschaften abhängig. In „meinem“ Blaukehlchen Revier befinden sich einige Brutpaare der herrlich kleinen, gelben Vögel und es ist mir jedesmal eine große Freude sie zu beobachten.
