Finished the W&A online wall cabinet project. This was fun to make, using some of the nicest local timber I’ve ever used, from #ballytrimsawmill. It’s not perfect but I’ve learned some new skills including veneering, half blind dovetails, turned handles and working to tight tolerances) which is what these online courses should be about. This has to be the hardest I have ever worked on any one piece of furniture. It had a missing chunk of wood on one side, lifting damaged veneer on both cupboard doors, the doors were really warped. It took me WEEKS to get the doors straight and at that, I couldn't get them fully straight. Getting the Veneer just right (Geometry is not my strong suit) then staining the new veneer to match the old veneer took all the patience I could muster. [**Custom work, not for sale**] This incredible Empire-style oak buffet has been brought back to life! My clients spotted this beauty while they were picking up their first custom piece. I started prepping it last July and picked up where I left off just a few weeks ago. Manufactured in the early 1900s at the latest, a ton of work went into refinishing the buffet to make it both beautiful and functional. The damaged veneer on top was completely removed, all of the drawers have been rebuilt, and the majority of the drawers have new bottoms. This piece had been exposed to moisture in a damp garage, so both of the doors and several drawers had to be planed down to get them to open and close smoothly. It also needed a new backer. This piece has been painted in @wiseowlpaint Republic Red, which complements the raw wood top and antique brass hardware perfectly. I salvaged some oak from another refinished piece and used it to fill the gap on the top of the back where a shelf used to sit. The drawers and back wall have been lined with a pretty black and white ginkgo print. All of the wood inside has been refreshed with Wise Owl's furniture tonic. The entire piece has been sealed with a water-based satin polyurethane. I'd say it was worth saving, wouldn't you? Believe me when I tell you this cabinet was under deep cover when I found it. It had both a door and a paint job that was giving major barn vibes (check out the reel if you missed it) and I originally thought it was a primitive farmhouse piece. However when I went to move it it weighed waaaay too much for a pine piece that was mostly empty space. Opening the door confirmed my suspicions; not pine, not primitive. It was, in fact an antique architect’s podium made of solid oak. So I removed the paint and the door and gave it a fresh finish. Now it’s back to its original look. Done and Done! 🥳 Whew! 🥳 This project was a doozy, just the shear size of the king size frame, made it a challenge for me. Thanks to my wife again for all the patience waiting for it get built and all the help getting it put together. Def. has the same quality and design of Gustav Stickley! $695 Measures 48 inches wide 12 inches deep 49 tall. Continuing with the wall hanging cabinet as part of the W&A online course. Main carcass and doors are assembled and hinge mortises cut. Trying to keep a consistent and even shadow gap between the doors and door panels is proving tricky. The door panels are made from book matched rippled ash - I like the contrast with the oak. The back panel is veneered oak on a ply substrate.
