How did I survive!!?? Proud to have claimed 7th in class in a treacherous French rally in Gatinais. The conditions meant for some ice like terrain with huge ditches that was taking no prisoners! Of the 75 vehicles that started only 45 finished, that’s 30 vehicles either crashing out or having mechanical problems. Thankfully Big Boy my @bowlermotors @Defender was a beast for me, the 2.3 tonne did get my heart racing as we slid in the mud, but my confidence built. As the conditions dried over the weekend I was powering up through the gears skimming across the trop of the ruts squealing with adrenaline. I only hit one barrel and he took it well [see image for the damage]. Jack my dedicated Bowler technician kept him running smoothly leaving myself and new navigator Chris to focus on smooth lines, full throttle and aggressive braking. Yey another trophy!! Rocking up to gun fight with a missile launcher.... yup that's me in a T1 car at a UK @theawdclub comp safari. A car designed for the desert racing to Dakar, but sometimes putting yourself in tough conditions is the best way to learn. Amazing weekend with @exciterally team getting to drive the Warrior 3. Super proud to have managed 2nd in class being beaten by just 1.5 minutes for 1st. And 15th overall of 52 signed on cars. I'll take that for my first ever time driving a new car. Each lap I managed to improve, with my last lap being over a minute quicker than my first!!! My focus was on smooth lines installed in me by @bowlermotors trainer @dave_hooper999 [which was challenging in the whoopy Bovington terrain] and keeping it safe. Huge thanks to the Excite team for trusting me in their gorgeous car for the weekend. I'm now the first person to ever competitively race a Warrior 3 T1 rally car in the UK!! Mad cool. Who's driven a T1 car? A T1 car is basically the highest spec class you can have in cross country rallying. It's a full space-framed custom build and so not based on a production bodyshell like my Defender T2 car. They still have regulations on power limits, wheel base, tyre size but are a class of their own. I decided to have a go in the @exciterally teams Warrior 3 at @theawdclub at Cloud Hill Bovington. The course was definitely not designed for a monster car like this so I certainly had my challenges with tight corners that the desert design steering lock really struggled to get around but my goodness the left hand drive stick shift 3litre BMW 6 cylinder engine gave me some fun!! “I won’t get on my rally bike without my airvest” - @skylerhowes110. As a fellow rally rider it has been great fun sharing crash stories with legends Skyler and @rickybrabec at the global @Alpinestars launch for the TechAir off road airbag. Alpinestars have been developing the algorithm and design for nearly 20 years. What happens in Vegas stays in Vegas right? Okay, maybe not with me...I’m here in the USA with @Alpinestars for the launch of the TechAir airbag. Yes it's finally coming to market!!!! It’s equipment I've been wearing for the last two years in desert races (only made available for race starters), and it is literally life and bone saving kit. It has saved me on five occasions now where the deploy has meant I carried on riding. Over 6,000km 13 days and all the way to Dakar, Senegal! @AfricaEcoRace, the ‘original’ Dakar complete!! That was by far the toughest, most gruelling and most brutally demanding challenge I’ve faced both physically and mentally!! I managed to survive every single stage safely and smoothly with no mechanicals and only 2 offs and 4 small drops across 103 hours on the bike tackling upwards of 635kms a day! My body feels beaten beyond the boundaries of my limits, but I never quit!! Overall only 25 moto riders completed 100% of all stages, so with 46 on the start line that’s only 54% of riders who managed to stay in and race everything 👉 I was one of those 100% finishers!!! Day 12 and the second last day of the @africaecorace and it finally happened... I got collasoly lost! I guess it wouldn’t be right to do a technical roadwork navigation event across more than 6,000kms of the Sahara Desert without it happening once, right? Not long into the day I suddenly realised I had not a scooby doo where I was. Totally perplexed I stopped and sat for a few minutes and wondered how I was going to find my way out of this situation. With no GPS equipment or technology to pinpoint my location I began to have a little panic, I decided to call my Support crew and see if they could check my event tracking and find my location, maybe a little bit naughty but when lost in the desert you have to use your resources. Unfortunately I was unable to reach my team. But in a way I’m pleased I wasn’t able to get any external help because it forced me to really think and use my navigational skills to the extremes. I worked out an average compass bearing for the next 30km of direction points and decided to travel 6km in that direction in hope that I would intersect a safety waypoint before going into the dunes. Thankfully, I am clearly a well trained sniffer dog and my theory worked, I was no longer lost! The dunes were cross camber and incredibly soft. But I’m pleased to say I remained upright throughout and continued to the end of the day without any more dramas and still no off's! 💪 After crossing the Mauritanian border into Senegal the realisation hit that this was the last special stage of the race and in a few kms times my race clock will be turned off and tomorrow I will ride into Dakar! Dramatic start to day 11 when a sandstorm hit the @africaecorace bivouac in the early hours. A long and disturbed nights sleep followed, especially for my team who got up multiple times to strap down camp and Big Buddy. Kitting up in these condition proved challenging but I must say it was the speediest I have been. The support crew were even wearing motorcycle goggles to keep the sand out of their eyes. It was quite a giggle and a welcome distraction from my nerves. Unfortunately yesterday a motorcycle rider had a severe crash on a 40ft dune requiring substantial medical help and was flown across the country to a large hospital. Thankfully he is still with us and wishing him a speedy recovery. Safety is priority and with the sandstorm lingering and the helicopters late arrival the first 190km of the stage was cancelled. After a 3 hour wait in the heat my nerves were increasing. But within minutes on the bike my nerves went and I got into rythym 💪 The short stage meant an early arrival to the bivouac and I had time to relax on my Vango roll matt in the sunshine while refuelling and hydrating my body before the final days. Another day with no crashes or off's, however, in one of the toughest most intense races in the world I sustained my first and worst injury so far... I got a paper cut on my lip from the foil of my protein shake 😱 and papercuts really hurt!! Day 11 complete, 2 days to go! Mega rough start to day 9 of the @africaecorace I definitely did not wake this morning feeling refreshed nor ready to tackle another 478km on a motorcycle. My body was aching and mega exhausted from the previous weeks riding, and knowing today I was about to hit some of the most notoriously soft and challenging sand dunes in Mauritania, my nerves were high and I was certainly feeling emotional. The special stage provided no warmup with us almost immediately going straight into the first section of Dunes. But after 32 km on a single compass heading , I was absolutely buzzing to have successfully navigated my way through the dune field with zero crashes! I did have on tiny moment where I sunk axle deep into the soft sand, and my heart went but a quick thinking swift manoevor to the right and down the steep face of the dune got me unstuck in seconds with minimal energy expenditure 💪 The Mauritanian landscape and countryside is certainly a dramatic change from that of Morocco. About 80% of today I was riding in sand covering 1/3 of the wheels. But yet it was a fantastic smooth and flowing day, though it did require a lot of concentration and keeping my body well positioned and stable on the bike. Today was almost like a safari; seeing lots of animals including camels, donkeys and beautiful little birds. I also noticed these random little yellow balls that grow out of the grass, one day I’m going to stop and figure out what they are but they always catch my eye as I ride past. Day 5, saw me sapping up lots of mileage in record time, with 8hrs 20mins saddle time and an average speed of 70 km/h topping out at 116km/h it was certainly a much faster rally stage than the days before. it’s easy to think that having a faster speed means easier terrain; which is correct but to maintain higher speeds you are still having to rapidly read and react to the terrain whilst holding the bike straight. I have noticed that my top speeds are lower during the @africaecorace than during my previous race of Morocco Desert Challenge. My mechanic Joe of @desertrose.racing.academy and I made some tweaks on my bike. Lowering the forks in the front yoke, sofftening my @ktechsuspension and a few other minor adjustments. Hopefully these changes will provide me with more impact absorption, stability and a smoother ride for traveling at faster speeds. I rode the day with some strong navigation, with Günter the giant Austrian and Tanika from Japan following behind in my path of dust. After a total of 592km I got to the shores of Dakhla full of energy thinking I might go Kite Surfing tomorrow, but at the same time I talked myself out of the idea. A rest day is a rest day for a reason! “Vanessa, get back in your box” My body is feeling far stronger than I thought it was going to be, I’m feeling really comfortable on the bike and even my hands are going strong, which is a good sign of my riding and body position. Disgusting day. I can only describe today as one monumental rock after another for hundreds of kilometres. Day 4 was a brutal and gnarly day comprised of a 467km special stage of... Drum roll... Rocks! Rock rock rock rock rock and more rock. Genuinely if it had been a one-day event, no one would ever do it again kind of brutality of rock. But the reality of rally is that it is all armed to test us, to push our endurance, to find a limit and push the boundaries of our capabilities. So with that, I’m pleased to say that I found my way all the way to the finish line, I say, ‘found’ as road book navigation is tricky, but I hit every waypoint and made no navigation errors 💪 Another 10 hours and 30 minutes in the saddle and I’m super pleased with how strong my body is feeling. I had one peak moment of hip pain, catching it in some sand but otherwise I’m coping well with my body. Last night my eyes started to puff like they did during @moroccodesertchallenge but thankfully some antihistamines had me looking more normal again this morning. This one particular rock made me smile and reminded me of every single one of you. Thank you for supporting me and giving me energy from afar with all your comments, messages and support. I’m sorry I’m not replying but just know that I’m receiving your energy so please keep them coming. Nutrition on such long riding days is mega important, my first two days have been both 9+ hours of bum in saddle, this makes for very challenging nutrition. I’m running @tailwindnutritionuk in my water which is giving me 2200 cal a day and a lovely consistent supply of energy and electrolytes. However I do not feel I’m getting enough calories in because I am only getting a 15 minute neutralisation in the middle of the day, and I’m only able to realistically eat at best one and a half protein bars. This isn’t going to be sustainable for 13 days 😬 So I have decided that from today onwards I will stop every three hours and take the time to eat food to make sure that I’m fuelling my body correctly. Tough day! With a mix of hard pack, the monster Merzouga dunes, some nasty energy sapping sand tracks and river beds, and of course enough jaw rattling rock to make Morocco proud, it was a long feeling 383km special...although unfortunately my route ended up being 419km due one missed navigation 🤦♀️ Thankfully I was not alone. I found myself, 6 trucks, 3 pick up trucks, 1 buggy, and 3 motorbikes all circling round for a considerable period of time, trying to find the right route. Once I did finally find it, I realised to my dismay that my initial course was only 10 m off. What a waste of energy, but thankfully I found my way again. I did have an off today, although not a single drop in the dunes (yey...my nerves again proving a waste of energy as I nailed the dunes), but instead I caught a rock in the river flats, sending me off and triggering my @Alpinestars air vest to deploy before I even knew I was going down. It wasn't a big crash and I didn’t feel single ounce of pain, my safety kit did exactly what it needed to do, deploying before I hit the ground. I continued riding but decided to pull over 15 minutes later to swap my airvests two gas cylinders. I decided taking the time to recharge was a far better long-term choice than riding without its protection. My body was feeling the impact of so much hard rock by the final 50 km but after some soothing rub from my lovely support team Anika, a hit shower and a lot of food I'm ready for a solid nights sleep. It wouldn’t be day 1 without a little chaos. After 2 days on the ferry from France we arrived early at the port in Nador, Morocco. I was race ready and eager to disembark the ship to get to that start line, but “Big Buddy” my KTM 450 Rally Replica decided he wanted a little longer to sleep. Yup he had a flat battery! Thankfully Joe my trusty mechanic and a @ctekchargers booster had him started and saved me a somewhat awkward push off the ship (and he helped two others ride off too). We then faced a few hours of customs delays....which basically worked very well to just turbo charge my nerves 🤦♀️ before setting off the start into a 597km journey to Boudnib. I enjoyed my £8 headphones on the road liaison for music although they didn’t enjoy my standing on them at the fuel stop. Thankfully one ear works still. I definitely know why I use a @cardosystems for my music normally!! (Helmet accessories are banned unfer FIM racing regs). My tracker also had a malfunction but should be sorted for tomorrow - link in bio. And my Insta360 mount snapped... But..mMy heated @moskomoto jacket was a dream in the crisp winter air! I was toasty so at least I nailed some tech! 🤣 The rest of the day saw 9 hours 35 minutes in the saddle with roughly 25 minutes of stops to refuel or pee. My nerves? HA what nerves...they vanished within about 15 minutes of starting. Typical! Lol My navigation was solid and I felt smooth and confident on Big Buddy. How can riding up a stage make the heart go so fast! I had a proper meltdown pre ceremonial start of the @africaecorace following meeting Kurt... He was one of the trucks at the @tunisiadesertchallenge who gave me water the day I was stuck in the dunes. My heart immediately knew that if it wasn't for competitors like Kurt I would not have made it home, and that hit me hard. Thankfully I did make it home and I learned a lot and I'm now, after a little cry, ready to take on the original Dakar route!! Let's go! It's time to head to Africa! I'm fully signed on and ready to race. We now have the ferry and will arrive 6am 2nd of January to Nador, Morocco. Shortly after I'll be off the start line for day one racing 597km of Morocco mayhem! My emotions have been all over the place. A few tears questioning myself and self doubt but overall I am now feeling pumped and ready. Nerves on edge as I wait for the all clear! Getting to the start line is an hugely understated process in rally riding. The lead up, planning, bike building, preparing and of course finance is huge. It's months of admin sorting insurance, ordering tyres, race licences and carefully packing the required safety and medical items, kit and tools needed for all scenarios. Once you're finally on the ground the admin continues as any good rally, such as the @africaecorace have a meticulous sign off process to ensure every competitor is equipped for the challenges ahead. No safety flare and kit, no start. No insurance, no racing. And the bike and support car are also inspected, including all your tracking kit to enable the mission control team to monitor you. If you've not got your admin sorted, it's not going to be looking good! But the reality is that these checks safe lives 🙏 Disappearing into the desert solo on a bike comes with risks. But together the administration can help mitigate some of the risks. And this as been the smoothest sign on for me with the help of my 3 person team!
