ROAD NOTE #ISLAND It’s around one in the morning(?). We are by an unknown, unknown gas station, mosque. I don’t know how long we will stop. Engine is off. People have gone off, too. It is chilly, windy. Body is paining after hours of distance and sitting, dazed between the realities of sleeping and not. I feel like old wood creaking as I get off. The toilets are locked and closed and so I go around the wall enclosing the area to pee. Around the wall is just a plateau ending in a black horizom. You can’t even see where the sky begins. The wind hits me, stronger over the flat sand. The road is lit and I see it reach into the obscurity. I don’t know which direction we came from or in which we are going. I crouch on the edge. Just by the border of light with the wall behind me, facing the excessive black space. The moon is a half moon. It looks wider now, like a smile, the Cheshire cat or a half cup of liquid filling up from the bottom. We are on a tiny tiny island. Around us could be anything; bottom of the sea, outer space, vacuum, dreamland, unconciousness. All this an intermission, a parenthesis. It doesn’t excist. I will wake from it like from so many other things. Now the engine is starting. People board. Six hours to go. Muscles, ligaments, joints still aching, creaking, a little better after grace of night air. I assure my self that it’s going to be OK. Today Ryan found a hidden gem of a restaurant /Restaurant Pescador.It was recommended from a fellow traveller, but for some reason Google Maps was taking us in a completely different place/ apparently is a hotel in the middle of Dakhla with the same name, lucky Ryan doesn't rely only on Google maps for navigation ( we learn our lesson the hard way in Greece 4 year ago ,when Google maps took us on a road devergeon true a deep mud and we were stuck for three days before being rescued from a local farmer)and manadged to find the place eventually 😅 instead for late lunch we went for dinner but it was great experience The beautiful little restaurant nestled on the ocean shore offered us breathtaking views and delicious food, we can't recommend it enough #morocco🇲🇦 #dakhla #northafrica #westernsahara #travel #vanlife #beautifuldestinations #deliciousfood #oceanvibes #traveljournal #nomadlife

On February 27, 1976, Western Sahara declared its independence from Spain under the name of the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic. However, to this day it is a conflictive area since it was not recognized by all countries. In 1976 it was illegally occupied by Morocco and Mauritania. In 1979, Mauritania signed peace with the Polisario Front (liberation movement of Western Sahara) and renounced its claims to the territory. In August 1979 the northern part of the territory was annexed by Morocco. Due to this, its capital, El Aaiún, is under Moroccan control, which is why the authorities of Western Sahara have their capital in Tifariti. El 27 de febrero de 1976 Sahara Occidental declaró su independencia de España con el nombre de República Árabe Saharaui Democrática. Sin embargo, hasta el día de hoy es una zona conflictiva ya que no fue reconocida por todos los países. En 1976 fue ocupada ilegalmente por Marruecos y Mauritania. Bienvenue à 📍Dakhla Cette ville au mélange de culture avec ses mosquées dont la magnifique mosquée Eddarham, sa sublime église Notre Dame du Mont Carmel et son parc et enfin le bonheur de trouver de l’alcool 🫣😂 Oui oui il est possible de trouver de l’alcool à Dakhla, d’ailleurs tous les hôtels en servent. Pour rappel le Sahara Occidental est un territoire indépendant qui appartient au Maroc. Le Maroc contrôle 80 % du territoire du Sahara occidental, tandis que le Polisario contrôle les 20 % restants. Day 712 of our world bike tour to raise awareness about the occupation of Western Sahara. . Our days in Geneva have been very intense. We have met so many organizations and institutions ranging from the UN mission to South Africa, UN high commissioner for human rights and UN high commissioner for refugees, the International Committee for the Red Cross to Swiss parliamentarians and journalists. . These past two days we were also joined by a Sahrawi human rights defender from the occupied territories who is working tirelessly for the Sahrawi political prisoners, some of which have been arbitrarily detained for twenty years just for participating in a demonstration. They are being tortured, electrocuted, cut and abused in every unimaginable way. Their families are being regularly punished and economically deprived. . Tomorrow we go to the capital Bern for a meeting with a parliamentarian, events with Climate Strike and Amnesty. The Idrisid dynasty or Idrisids were an Arab Muslim dynasty from 788 to 974, ruling most of present-day Morocco and parts of present-day western Algeria. Named after the founder, Idris I, the Idrisids were an Alid dynasty descended from Muhammad through his grandson Hasan. The Idrisids are traditionally considered to be the founders of the first Moroccan state, setting the stage for subsequent dynasties and states centered in this region. Their reign played an important role in the early Islamization of Morocco and also presided over an increase in Arab immigration and Arabization in major urban centers. Fleeing the Abbasid Caliphate to the east in the aftermath of the Battle of Fakhkh, Idris I first established himself in 788 at Volubilis in present-day Morocco with the help of local Berber allies. He and his son, Idris II, subsequently founded what became the city of Fez further east. Fez became the capital of an Idrisid state which ruled most of present-day Morocco and part of western Algeria. After Idris II's death, the realm was divided between his rival sons. After a period of conflict, the dynasty's authority resumed and remained relatively stable between 836 and 863. In the late 9th century, however, they faced repeated challenges and local opposition. In the 10th century the region came under the political domination of Zenata tribes who fought proxy battles on behalf of two rival powers in the region, the Fatimid Caliphate and the Umayyad Caliphate of Córdoba. The Idrisids were definitively expelled from Fez in 927, but held onto to a reduced territory in the north of Morocco from their base at Hajar an-Nasr. 📍Europe to Africa without flying Day 5. Dakhla-Nouakchott 🇲🇷 🚌 ⬇ Time to get to Mauritania finally! Supratours bus leaves Dakhla early morning. On a bus I met 4 guys by chance who were also on the way for the Iron Ore train, so we spent the whole day together traveling to Mauritania, was fun! On the way, we asked a bus driver to stop next to the famous sign Tropic De Concer. The border control took almost 3 hours. Just be patient. Right after the border, we saw the infamous Iron Ore Train wow! The bus journey to Nouakchott should take about 13 hours, but…. Between midnight and 5 am, the Mauritanian authorities prohibit traffic for vehicles. During this traffic ban period, vehicles are not allowed on national roads. Of course, the police stopped us just in front of the entrance to the city! So we had to park our minivan next to the road just in front of the entrance to the city!
