Celebrating my bootcamper Danielle and her 6 hour caving expedition in Wales this weekend Danielle introduced me to caving last year - it’s physically intense! A 700metre underground crawl (think the gap underneath your bed), rope climbing, swimming, and variations of the above…for 6 hours Before she went, Danielle reached out to me for nutrition advice: we worked out a plan to give her slow-release energy that she could safely carry with her…..which would sustain her, for 6 hours And she did it! “We made it! Trying to get an aesthetic gym girlie mirror selfie but my arms are too shaky and I'm dressed like I had no other clean clothes and even though there were only about five people in the gym I was embarrassed because I took this just as someone started to walk past 😅 I know it's really not a big deal but I get anxious in the gym and I am really proud of myself, I went to the gym when I was anxious about going! Someone was on the machine(s) I wanted to use and I rearranged the workout around it! I needed a mat and to stand in front of the mirror and I did it without getting in anyone's way! I had to adjust equipment and I managed it fine! I put stuff away and got out the little weird black box thing for my workout (those black step things that people use for box jumps??) without incident! I had to lunge up and down directly to some poor chap using a machine and instead of being awkward and modifying where I was going I just did my lunges and it was fine! How people record themselves running and still look good is beyond me 🤣🙈 I signed up for a weeks trial of @runna_coach with the goal of a half marathon distance plan and I really like the look of the app and plan so far. It’s nice to have some guidance as a newbie. Tonight’s run was run one on plan (easy 6K in 45-55mins based off of my current average 5K time). It wasn’t easy but I did smash the time. I probably should have gone slower but the little devil 😈 on my shoulder just wouldn’t allow that. I used to run and I used to run a lot faster so I know it’s in me and I know I’m capable of it. I just need to be patient with myself. It’s ok to find it tough. Progress is definitely not linear. That 4:07 broke me mentally and physically and I’m glad I’ve put that awful race behind me 🙌 as I wondered if I’d ever get sub 4 again. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, and I’ve looked back at 2022 race many times wondering why I was even on the start line. Having a f**k it attitude and flying through the first few miles is never really going to bode well in a marathon. A shambles. I’ve changed my training a bit since then, had a break from marathons, and am constantly learning what works for me and how to balance it all. The difference this time? Shoes obvs😆…jokes. They clearly helped but I stood on that London start line actually believing I could PB and believing I could hold the pace I needed to for at least a good chunk of the race. Of course there were doubts, that 4:07 haunting me, but I was determined to get this one right in terms of pacing and fueling. This evening me was grateful that this morning me pushed through to get my run done early. 5 miles, taking in all the views. A few walk breaks to keep things easy, plus my head wasn't fully in it this morning. I'm aiming for a solid couple of weeks training taking me into mid-May, with a wee increase in mileage and pushing myself in the gym. 💫April round up 💫 Quite possibly the best month of the year! My pals all got phenomenal results on their marathons showing that us 40 / 50 somethings still have plenty of life on us and a whole lot more too give. I walked away with a marathon podium in my age category and had a big smile on my face doing it. Where to begin…. MIUT 💫 . A race I’d been dreaming of for two years, finally reality. Landing in Madeira on Thursday, my stomach was in knots not knowing how’d I’d feel on the day. But as days went by, I just couldn’t wait to uget out there and toe that start line. Imposter syndrome firmly in place! Madeira is truly one of my favourite places of all time - EVERYONE should visit (preferably not when im there though… 😂🤣) and this race just cements that adoration 💛 . The most incredible yet bloody unforgiving trails, a runners dream!! Next time I’ll be adding some serious downhill training!! 30% gradient is designed for rolling down, not running!! 😂 The organisation for the race was second to none, never questioned the course and the marshals/volunteers were just marvellous.
