Here’s Shoom DJ @dannyrampling dancing on a podium at the opening night of Spectrum at Heaven on April 11, 1988. It’s 36 years ago this month and the truth is that only about 100 people turned up to that launch night. But Spectrum, run by Ian St Paul (see pic #3, taken in June ‘88 in a @boys.own top) and with resident DJs @pauloakenfold, @colin_hudd and @terryfarley, was a totally transformational night that took the Acid House scene in London to a whole new level. A very smart piece of PR ensured that those opening night clubbers had an amazing time, as everyone who came was offered ecstasy gratis (I bet I was the only one who declined – I know, I know! – as I literally needed to focus). By the third week 1,000 people were at the club and a week later it was sold out with queues outside, so naturally the podiums and dancefloors were packed (pic #4). This was a life-changing club, and it all happened on a Monday night... Both of these photos of Danny were mislaid years ago (if those missing slides ever turn up again, Danny, I’d really LOVE to get them back!) so these pics are copied from publications that appeared back in the 1990s. Not since Taboo* had such an atmosphere of euphoria and dance abandon occurred, and not since the ‘60s had hippy ideals begun to permeate youth culture. Talk was of ‘love and peace’ and dressing down, and people apologised for standing on your toe ... the music was almost secondary to the uninhibited freedom that was unleashed. The fashion victim voyeurism that had dominated clubs for so long was suddenly turned on its head as clubbers swapped their designer labels for T-shirts and shorts and started dancing.” *Taboo was a club hosted by the performance artist @leighbowery which ran for a madcap, era-defining year in 1985-1986.
