Got to spend last night helping a sweet dental hygienist friend begin her journey to FREEDOM!!! She said something on our call that resonated with me. She has no kids, no husband, and makes great money as a hygienist here in AK… (the going rate here is $60-$70 hourly) She’s recently been meeting with a financial advisor that calculated her retirement after putting in so much for the next 25+ years and she said and I quote, “I had no idea how bleak my future looked until the advisor showed me the numbers. I will not even be close to hitting any retirement goals” Also, the numbers they ran were her working 4 full days a week which any hygienist knows all too well the aches and pains and surgeries associated with working that many hours, for 25 years IF you are even lucky enough to make it that long- especially with the production expectations now. Even though she was nervous for this new adventure, she knew that she was never going to achieve the financial goals or schedule goals she has, staying in the same place- and especially not with the plans she has to have a family one day. This is not a brag of any kind because really all the glory here belong to God- but this is more of an urge to all my hygiene friends. I’ve made more in 15 days from home, around my kids’ schedules, than I do working 3 full days a week for a month at $65/hour, so imagine what will happen in another 15 days. And my body feels great. Plus, being there to help and coach other women just hits completely different. “Dental hygienists are the unacknowledged heroes in oral health care, diligently working to protect their patients’ oral health. Besides removing plaque and polishing teeth, hygienists can identify early signs of potentially life-threatening conditions, including oral cancer. One of the most common cancers affecting humans across the globe is oral cancer, and early detection can significantly reduce morbidity.1 The key to successful treatment outcomes is early detection and intervention. The dental hygienist’s keen eye, skilled hands, and understanding of oral anatomy equip them to identify oral pathology in patients with oral cancer. In 2023, according to the Oral Cancer Foundation, “Close to 54,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral or oropharyngeal cancer this year. It will cause over 9,750 deaths, killing roughly 1 person per hour, 24 hours per day. Of those 54,000 newly diagnosed individuals, only slightly more than half will be alive in 5 years (approximately 57%). 🦷 BE THE ADVOCATE FOR YOUR PATIENT 🦷 Your patients trust that you are doing what is best for them. If we fail to do our jobs as clinicians, we are failing our patients. If we fail to update a full mouth perio charting at a patient’s first perio maintenance after therapy, how are we able to truly see improvements and relay this information back to the patient? Again, perio charting alone does NOT prove a patient needs periodontal therapy. We look at many factors such as dentition, x-rays, dental and medical history. However, perio charting helps paint the whole picture. Do not simply go through the motions because your office’s standard of care wants something in the chart to look at. Let this be part of YOUR standard of care for YOUR patients. BE THE DIFFERENCE YOUR PATIENTS NEEDS!!

If you know anything about my story, the you know I’ve dealt with my fair share of toxic work environments in my career as a dental assistant and as a dental hygienist. I’ve dealt with being bullied, discriminated, gas-lit, and more. I thought at one point I was alone until I started researching this and discovered that it is prevalent in all industries and unfortunately many of my dental colleagues have had similar experiences. My goal is to help others despite what position they hold in an organization. However what I know now (Oprah voice), is that we have the power to bring about positive change within our lives and to make a way out of these situations through self evaluation and determination.
