My project for the Map Competition: Like a Phoenix from the Ashes Between October 13th and 15th, 2023, an exceptionally devastating fire occurred at the western tip of the Portuguese island of Madeira, burning almost one-tenth of the island's total area. The aim of the project was to create an idealized forecast of vegetation canopy recovery in the affected area. The forecast was based on observations of vegetation recovery after a former fire that occurred on Madeira in 2016. The recovery was monitored using satellite imagery data from the Sentinel-2 mission of the European Space Agency and quantified based on changes in the NDVI vegetation index. The burned area was categorized based on geomorphological parameters (elevation, slope orientation, and Topographic Wetness Index) into 48 categories. For each category, a formula for vegetation cover recovery was derived based on observations of NDVI value changes.
