I arrived up in North Queensland yesterday and met locals in Port Douglas and Yungaburra. The last time I was in Yungaburra, I was visited the proposed site of the Chalumbin Wind Farm. I’m pleased to say thanks to the fantastic efforts of the local community they have managed to stop the proposed development which is fantastic news. “Renewable energy company Ark Energy – a subsidiary of north Asia industrial giant Korea Zinc – says it has withdrawn its proposed but heavily contested Wooroora Station wind farm after repeated delays in the federal government planning process, and after indications that it was unlikely to get approval. The 294 MW project, formerly known as the Chalumbin wind project, had been downsized and redesigned at least twice in a bid to reduce environmental impacts and respond to local concerns, which were mostly focused on its adjacency to a World-Heritage-listed rainforest west of Cairns. Why women are more impacted by extreme heat? A report by HomeNet #SouthAsia, a regional network of home-based workers, found that 43% of women surveyed had reported a loss in income and an increase in caregiving as a result of extreme heat. Another 2014 study concluded that more women died during a heat wave in Ahmedabad in 2010 when temperatures reached 47.8°C (118°F) and heat-related hospital admissions of newborns increased by 43%. Ronita Bardhan, an associate professor who co-authored the 2023 Cambridge study, says that while people of all genders are equally unable to cope beyond a certain temperature, women are less likely to take protective measures from the heat. “Women will not do any sort of intervention unless the temperature crosses around 32°C [89.6°F] whereas men will start to access any sort of cooling intervention as soon as it crosses around 28 or 29°C [82 or 84°F],” Bardhan says. During long days spent inside to avoid the heat, many women suffer from dehydration. Lots of research, including the study on Ahmedabad’s 2010 deadly heatwave by the U.S. think tank Rand Corporation, has pointed to the lack of access to toilets, which leads women to drink less water to avoid relieving themselves outdoors. __ Volunteers across 84 countries collected 1.8 million pieces of plastic waste and counted the items contributed by specific companies. The top polluters were Coca-Cola, PepsiCo, Nestlé, Danone, Altria—the parent company of Philip Morris USA—and Philip Morris International. The basis of this study was that if Coca-Cola is producing one-tenth of the world’s plastic, the research predicts that the beverage behemoth is responsible for about a tenth of the identifiable plastic litter on beaches or in parks, rivers, and other ecosystems. More than 1 in 10 of the pieces came from Coca-Cola, the top polluter by a significant margin. Overall, just 56 companies were responsible for half of the plastic bearing identifiable branding. The contract with Nasa’s Oceans Melting Greenland(OMG) measured changing water temperatures and salinity and how marine glaciers reacted to the presence of warm, salty water melting the glaciers below the sea level. Mostly in uncharted waters a multibeam echosounder was attached to the hull for mapping the ocean floor and collecting data that was fundamental to new observations and insights into the sea floor geometry. This aided in providing a revolutionary data set which is being used to understand Greenland’s ice loss, model ocean/ice interactions, and improve estimates of global sea level rise.
