Thomsonite on heulandite from Glenmont, Nova Scotia, Canada Five years ago this July we were doing a systematic search of zeolite localities in ‘the valley’ and came across this locality at Glenmont. We approached the owner of the property and were able to make an arrangement whereby we produced some of the finest chabazite, heulandite, thomsonite and stilbite we’ve seen from this province. There are several heavily mineralized basalt flows on the north mountain and if they were being actively quarried, they would produce noteworthy specimens. This is one of the thomsonites we found. 4.3 x 5.3 x 3.7 cm. NFS. The absent has always been present in the library. The collection was left behind by the collector Andreas Züst and works by itself. But what is a collection without the collector? During the four weeks and already months before the residency I am dealing with the subject of loss. I am specifically interested in approaching disappearance – led by personal experience but also by the fact that we live in an increasingly lively time of change. I wonder how we can approach mortal process and loss and how they become visible. Various processes of transience also open up a completely different view on all living things. What can you see in a library, if not read? During their one-month residency in the Andreas Züst library, artists Kenneth Ting-Yu Lin (TW) and zhaoyuefan (CHN) try to approach this question in different ways, individually and collectively: Inspired by Haruki Murakami’s novel “A Wild Sheep Chase” which the artist found in one bookshelf at the residency space, Fan folded certain pages from the books into a flock of sheep and led them on an escape from the library. At the same time, Kenneth transforms everything he saw into his series of drawings, creating new images on top of images. Odd remains of the Pangean mountains This small outcrop shows an orthogneiss from the Guadarrama mountains, Madrid, Spain. These rocks are granitic plutons that were metamorphosed by the Variscan Orogeny during the Late Carboniferous. The pluton itself is much older, and has been dated with Rb-Sr to be about 488 MA old. It is mostly formed by quartz, feldspars and biotite, and shows a S-C fabric formed by the combination of shear planes and metamorphic foliation that was created by ductile extensional deformation during the Variscan Orogeny. Extensional tectonics sound out of place during an orogeny, which is the formation of a mountain range at a convergent plate margin, and indeed, at the time the general tectonics were compressive. However, the formation of this huge mountain range between Gondwana and Laurussia caused the local crust to become so thick that it became gravitationally unstable, leading to the formation of large shear zones that extended the thickened crust. These shear zones cut previous Variscan structures, and are folded by later large scale Variscan folds.
