Last Saturday, we dived into action to honour Earth Day, uniting for our #cleanbluelagoon Earth Day Beach Clean-up at the Beachwood Mangroves in Durban. @greenstepsgroup proudly sponsored and launched a new clean-up movement in Durban, working hand in hand with our local community partner, Adopt A River, to make real environmental impact. Every Kg of Ocean waste counts, so we counted every kg. Proof-of-recovery meant every kg was documented by plastic kind and photographed. The waste was sorted per type, weighed per bag, and viewed on our Green Steps online portal verification maps. During the cleanup, we found a variety of surprising items, including car tyres, a bumper, electronic parts, irons, plastic chairs, shoes, textiles, ropes, bags and bags of polystyrene, plastic stationery, lighters, straws, bulbs, paint cans, deodorant roll-ons, personal care bottles, glass jars, condoms, sanitary products, diapers, pipes, plastic bags, PET bottles, rubber pieces, toothbrushes, earbuds, wrappers, and toys. There was a clean up, a colouring contest for kids, an informative talk by Dr. Zaleha of UIA (and MNS) on horseshoe crabs (an endangered species in the East Coast) and a free health screening for the locals. We joined the beach/river clean up. The amount of single use plastic and polystyrene collected was absolutely mind boggling! This was a reminder to all present to cut down the use of such single use items. Opt for REUSABLE food containers and bottles/tumblers. REFUSE single use plastic and polystyrene for your health and the health of the environment. The students of UIA segregated the trash collected (unfortunately, none of the trash collected was in the condition required to be recycled and would therefore be sent to the landfill).
