A friendly reminder to anyone heading to Venice: Today's the day the new visitor registration system goes into effect! Rick's co-author, @travelwithcameron, was just in Venice and got the scoop: Basically, as a counter-over tourism measure, Venice is experimenting with a system to charge day trippers an "access fee" of €5. However, even those exempt from the fee — including anyone staying overnight in Venice — still have to register. This means on certain days, all visitors to Venice must have a registration QR code on their phone (or printed out). Be aware that (for now) this requirement only applies to 29 designated days between now and July 14 (dates in red on photo). City leaders describe it as a "pilot program"; soon, they will re-evaluate and decide whether to continue. If you're going to Venice later this year, be sure to check back. Some hotels and tour operators (including Rick Steves tours) can help you with registration, or even do it for you; others leave it entirely up to you. Getting registered is a bureaucratic headache, but ultimately not a big deal: Go to the website (https://cda.ve.it/en/) and fill out the form. While the website feels poorly designed, ultimately it should take just a few minutes. To confirm, you either need to make a toll-free call or provide an email address where you’ll need to click a link. How will this be monitored, exactly? Excellent question! We'll find out, starting today. When I was there, locals speculated that you might be greeted by control officers upon arrival at the train station (Sta. Lucia) and/or bus station (Piazzale Roma) and/or parking garage (Tronchetto), and be asked to show your QR code. To me, this seems like a logistical nightmare...especially since the Pope is coming to town in a few days for a Mass on St. Mark's Square. This will bring hundreds of thousands of additional visitors to this tiny island, just as they're figuring out the new system. If you'll be in Venice over the next week, pack your patience. If anyone happens to be there now (or soon), please report back on your experience. How was registration? Were you checked on arrival? Let's compare notes to help fellow travelers.

To celebrate Earth Day, we’re excited to announce our 2024 portfolio of Climate Smart Commitment grant recipients. By supporting these 13 nonprofit organizations with funds from our self-imposed carbon tax, our goal is to mitigate our environmental impact by creatively investing in groups fighting climate change through on-the-ground work in the developing world and government advocacy in the US. One of our new grantees is Health in Harmony (HIH), whose mission is to reverse tropical rainforest deforestation. By working directly with the Indigenous peoples and local communities who live in and beside rainforests, HIH works to protect 9.4 million hectares of rainforest across Indonesia, Madagascar, and Brazil. Our support will help them reduce community reliance on unsustainable practices while teaching climate-smart farming techniques in southeastern Madagascar. Congo Education Partners (CEP) is another newcomer to our Climate Smart portfolio for 2024. They support higher education in the Tshuapa Province of the Congo Basin Rainforest. Our donation will help CEP create a new generation of rainforest stewards by teaching them the skills to protect the forest, its wildlife, and the livelihoods of the local communities. A returning grantee is the Women's Global Education Project (WGEP), a nonprofit empowering women and girls in rural regions of sub-Saharan Africa to build better lives and foster more equitable communities. Our donation this year will equip WGEP to train 420 women on how to build climate-smart cookstoves (pictured here) and prepare 450 students to lead plastic reduction clean-ups and reforestation efforts along the Sine-Saloum Delta. Drumroll please…our 2025 tours are live on RickSteves.com! Our tours take you to unforgettable places–our very favorite, handpicked locations all across Europe. From the plains of Spain to the fjords of Norway; from Balkan beaches to alpine peaks; and from Italy, Greece, and Bulgaria to Belgium, Portugal, and Ireland, we cover what we consider to be the very best of Europe. Each year, we scrutinize our itineraries and brainstorm vivid experiences that will leave our tour members saying "wow!" Learning how to hand-make pierogi in a Polish kitchen or hiking among grazing cows through a high-mountain pasture, you’ll create indelible, lifelong memories on our tours—many of which would be difficult, if not impossible, on your own. And we lace these experiences together in a smart, efficient way that values your time, money, and intelligence. Even better, you’ll experience it all with a world-class guide. We recruit the very best guides in Europe, and Rick personally mentors them to ensure they deliver what you expect on a Rick Steves tour. If you’ve been on one (or many!) of our tours before, you know that our tours also attract curious, fun-loving, flexible travelers who share our travel philosophy. We expect everyone to pack light, carry their bags, and keep up with our experience-rich itineraries. Our guides teach you how to be independent, equipping you with the travel skills and confidence to make the most of your free time. Our travelers foster a spirit of empathy and curiosity on tour—seeking out people-to-people connections and traveling like a local rather than a tourist. Because of our insistence on staying in small, locally owned hotels and dining at mom-and-pop restaurants, Europeans view us as part of their community, not just part of the economy. While you’re browsing our 46 thoughtfully crafted journeys, keep in mind that many of our tours are expected to fill quickly, and it pays to act soon. Our early booking discount ($100 off any 2025 tour, applied during checkout) is available through June 30, 2024. We hope you’re able to join us in Europe soon so that we can help you turn your travel dreams into reality!

England's best city within two hours of London is beautiful, historic Bath. The city is popular and expensive, but a delight nonetheless — the most relaxing and elegant place to sample urban England. Bath was a joy even in ancient Roman times, when patricians soaked in the city's mineral springs. From Londinium (today's London), Romans traveled so often to "Aquae Sulis," as the city was called, to "take a bath" that finally it became known simply as "Bath." Today, a fine museum surrounds the ancient bathing site. Bath later prospered as a wool town, building its grand abbey about 500 years ago — the last great medieval church built in England. The abbey's façade features a very literal Jacob's Ladder — with angels going up…and down. The interior has breezy fan vaulting and is lit with enough stained glass that it feels like the inside of a giant lantern. By the middle of the 1600s, Bath's heyday had passed, and its population dropped — just a huddle of huts at the base of the abbey. Then, in 1687, King James II's wife, Queen Mary, struggling with infertility, came here and bathed. Within about 10 months she gave birth to a son. A few decades later, her stepdaughter Queen Anne came here to treat her gout. With all this royal interest, Bath was reborn as a resort. Most of the buildings you'll see today are from the 18th century — the cityscape is a triumph of the Neoclassical style that dominated the Georgian era, most of it built from the same honey-colored limestone. Free, fascinating town walks are offered by volunteers who bring to life highlights of this Georgian heritage — such as the Circus and Royal Crescent building complexes. During the Georgian era, Bath was the trendsetting Tinseltown of Britain, where the filthy rich went to escape the filthy cities. A professional gambler named Beau Nash followed his clients (and their money) to this resort town — and then acted as its one-man tourism department. He helped spiff up the city and today his statue stands above the Roman baths. From its evening indulgences to its elegant architecture, Bath combines beauty and hospitality better than most. It's a place drenched in history, but made for relaxation.

Perched above the Lauterbrunnen Valley in Switzerland's Bernese Oberland region (and only reachable by cable car or hiking boot), Gimmelwald is the epitome of Alpine bliss. Here, picture-perfect chalets cling to the mountainside, their flower-boxed windows adding splashes of color against snow-streaked peaks. You know, just like you imagined Switzerland to look like. 🇨🇭🐄⛰️ It's the type of place where you spend your days taking meandering hikes and snapping photos of meadows full of mooing cows and your evenings watching a thousand stars dance above while socializing with the world at the legendary Mountain Hostel. Trust me, once you go, you'll perpetually say: "I gotta get back to Gimmelwald." My best memories are a mix of natural wonders and time spent singing "Wonderwall" with other happy travelers. Our Best of England tour delivers just the right mix of urban Brit-thrills and thatch-happy village charm. From bustling London to the castles of Wales, your guide will bring the icons of Britain to life. And from windswept Roman lookouts to desolate prehistoric stone circles, you’ll venture far from the madding crowds, immersed in the wonder of this history-drenched island. Wander with wonder through the Lake District, where Wordsworth’s poems still shiver in trees and ripple on ponds. Attend an evensong service sung by an angelic choir, powered by a thunderous pipe organ, and draped in medieval grandeur. Imagine reviewing each splendid day over a pint, throwing a few darts with your new pub chums. To help keep you rested for the next day’s adventure, all stops are for two or three nights, in a mix of centrally located hotels and charming guesthouses. Julius Caesar toured Britain two millennia ago. A thousand years ago, the Normans came and William stayed. Decades ago, American GIs adopted this island as their home away from home. The first café in the Western world was in Paris—established in 1686 at Le Procope (still open today). The French had just discovered coffee, and their robust economy was growing a population of pleasure seekers and thinkers looking for places to be seen, to exchange ideas, and to plot revolutions—both political and philosophical. And with the advent of theaters such as La Comédie Française, the necessary artsy, coffee-sipping crowds were born. By 1700, more than 300 cafés had opened their doors; at the time of the Revolution (1789), there were more than 1,800 cafés in Paris. Revolutionaries from Jean-Paul Marat and Napoleon to Salvador Dalí enjoyed the freethinking café spirit. Café society took off in the early 1900s. Life was changing rapidly, with new technology and wars on a global scale. Many retreated to Parisian cafés to try to make sense of the confusion. Vladimir Lenin, Leon Trotsky, Igor Stravinsky, Ernest Hemingway, F. Scott Fitzgerald, James Joyce, Albert Einstein, Jean-Paul Sartre, Simone de Beauvoir, and Albert Camus were devoted members of café society. Some practically lived at their favorite café, where they kept their business calendars, entertained friends, and ate every meal. Parisian apartments were small, walls were thin (still often the case), and heating (particularly during war times) was minimal, making the warmth of cafés all the harder to leave. There are more than 12,000 cafés in Paris today, though their numbers are shrinking. They’re still used for business meetings, political discussions, and romantic interludes. 📝Our last #Japlanning session took place exactly where it should have: @pekingtavern. And it ended with mason on the mic 🎤 practicing for the epic #karaoke sessions to come on the other side of the Pacific. 🇯🇵 The past couple months we’ve gathered with our buddies @reneegonzalez @papi_and_coconuts to meticulously plan out every shrine and side street we should visit, with hopes of leaving not one cherry blossom 🌸 unturned. Our post-work sessions and weekend brunches birthed a route #RickSteves would be proud of. ✈️ So off we go! Landed and made our way into our home for the first week, the heart of #Ginza! You guys if Beverly Hills were Manhattan…that is Ginza. 🌃 Our first side street underground hit was a happy accident. I’d read all about @ginzalupin beforehand and was already glossy eyed over its history. 100 years ago (give or take) Japanese literati and activists turned this tiny bar into their home away from home, getting drunk on debate and coining themselves members of the “Burai-ha 無頼派.” Translation: “the school of irresponsibility and decadence.” So I knew Mason and I would fit in perfectly, should we ever find it. Jet lagged wandering put us right at its front door. Down the staircase, under the famous portrait of Dazai Osamu, one of twentieth century Japan’s best-known writers. You sit in the same chairs he did, should you go there today! The cocktails are some of the best in the world, and boy do I wish I could get a #MoscowMule like that again. We practiced our minimal Japanese with the waitstaff, who endearingly remarked “Japanese is HARD” as I said “Konnichiwa,” instead of “arigato,” as they sat down my cocktail 😂. Then a slow walk back to @achotelginza concluded Day 0, Night 1 in Japan. To be continued….. #tokyotravels #japantrip #ginzatokyo #tokyonights #lostinjapan

Paris hosts the Olympics from July 26 through August 11 (and the Paralympics August 28–September 8). Over the two weeks, 10 million tickets will be sold for events, and the world's eyes will be on Paris. During the Olympics, Parisian hotel prices are sky-high — about double what they'd be in a typical summer. But just before and after the Games, occupancy is lower than average — creating a handy window where savvy travelers might enjoy "drafting" behind, or in front of, that peak-of-peak period. Major sporting events leave host cities with an improved infrastructure, which often permanently improves a visitor's experience. These upgrades go beyond stadiums and sporting venues; London, Turin, and Athens still benefit from transportation lines and redevelopment that originated with the Olympics. One Parisian landmark that won't quite be ready in time for the Olympics is Notre-Dame Cathedral, which remains under restoration after the devastating fire it suffered in 2019. It's now set to reopen this December. Also this summer (June 14–July 14), Germany is hosting the UEFA European Football Championship — a.k.a. the Euro Cup — in which two dozen national teams vie for soccer supremacy. Ten German cities will host a total of 51 Euro Cup matches. If you'll be traveling during this time — not only in Germany, but anywhere in Europe — keep an eye on the match schedule. During the Euro Cup, communities across Europe huddle around big screens in bars and cafés, on piazzas, and in parks — cheering on their national squad. If the country you're visiting is taking the field, join the fun and watch the match with some new friends. Dress up in a colorful wig, buy a team scarf or jersey, and cheer alongside the natives. And, you may have heard about the upcoming ETIAS registration requirement for visiting most European countries. When implemented, it will require visitors to preregister online and pay a small fee before arriving. Originally planned for 2024, the program is pushed back — likely until mid-2025 — while Europe gets its bureaucratic ducks in a row. For 2024, don't worry about it. Montmartre, the hilltop Paris neighborhood, is in many ways the perfect French cliché: red-and-white checkered tablecloths, artist's easels filling petite squares, and bohemian cabarets with high-kicking cancans. The literal high point is Sacre-Cœur Basilica, from where the City of Light fans out at your feet. A century ago, Montmartre hosted a perfect storm of artistic creativity and avant-garde thinking and life on the hill was a commotion of cafés, bistros, and dance halls. Its low rents lured struggling artists whose canvases now sell for millions. Now, the hill is equal parts charm and kitsch — still vaguely small-town rustic but lots of tourists. If all you do is eat an overpriced crêpe and marvel at the views, you will have missed out on Montmartre's charm and history. Take a walk on the back streets, where a bit of village Montmartre survives. A stroll finds traces of the many people who've lived here over the years: monks stomping grapes (1200s), farmers grinding grain in windmills (1600s), dust-coated gypsum miners (1700s), Parisian liberals (1800s), Modernist painters (1900s), and all the struggling artists, dreamers, and drunkards who called Montmartre home. In 1904, a poor, unknown Spaniard named Pablo Picasso moved into an artists' abode — Le Bateau-Lavoir — which he shared with 10 others. In his studio he painted his radically modern Les Demoiselles d'Avignon — and revolutionized 20th-century art. Montmartre was once dotted with 30 windmills, used to press the monks' grapes and mill farmers' grain. The most famous is the "Red Windmill" — the Moulin Rouge dance hall. When it opened in 1889, it summed up the pleasure-seeking belle époque. Most nights, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec was among the customers, busily sketching as pretty cancan girls kicked their legs. The colorful posters are among his most recognizable works. Montmartre today retains some of the untamed appeal that drew fin-de-siècle bohemians and nonconformists to its winding lanes. As you wander, you may catch an echo of the free spirits who once partied, painted, and cancanned here. #RickSteves #RickStevesEurope #KeepOnTraveling #Montmartre
