#onthisday 181 years ago Alice, Grand Duchess of Hesse and by Rhine was born at Buckingham Palace, London, England. • Princess Alice Maud Mary of the United Kingdom was the 3rd child of Victoria, Queen of the United Kingdom and Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha. Alice’s birth prompted her parents to find a larger family home for them and her 2 siblings, which ultimately ended up being Osbourne House on the Isle of Wight. As a child, Alice was very curious about the world outside the Royal Household, and enjoyed trips to Balmoral Castle. She formed a tight bond with her 2 elder siblings, Princess Vicky and Prince Albert Edward, and was seen as the most emotionally sensitive and sympathetic of her family. Alice was very interested in nursing throughout her life. In 1861, she nursed her grandmother, the Duchess of Kent, and her father Prince Albert until their deaths. After Albert’s death, Alice acted as an unofficial secretary to her mother, who was too grief-stricken to carry out tasks herself. Before her father’s passing, she was engaged to wed Prince Louis of Hesse in the summer of 1862. Despite the extensive mourning period for Prince Albert, Alice and Louis’ wedding plans remained unchanged. They married privately on 1 July 1862 at Osbourne House. After the wedding, they returned to the Grand Duchy of Hesse, and were greeted by large crowds in both Bingen and Darmstadt. Alice gave birth to her 1st child, a daughter named Victoria, in the presence of her mother at Windsor Castle. Alice’s relationship with her mother had begun to deteriorate by this point, partly because Queen Victoria did not agree with Alice’s viewpoints, and also due jealousy of Alice’s happy life with a husband and children. Alice’s interest in nursing and compassionate nature continued into adulthood. During the Austro-Prussian war, she regularly visited hospitals to care for the sick and wounded. She also listened to her friend Florence Nightingale’s advice regarding anti-septic treatment and cleanliness in the hospital.

When she was 4 years old, she was joined by a sister named Margaret. Elizabeth, or “Lilibet” as her father and grandfather called her, had a very happy childhood. Her parents loved one another deeply, and since her father was the 2nd son of a monarch and not expected to one day ascend to the throne, they lived a more relaxed life. Elizabeth’s grandfather, George V, died at the beginning of 1936. Her uncle subsequently became king under the name Edward VIII. However, he abdicated less than a year later to marry his mistress. Instead, Elizabeth’s father became king, and Elizabeth became 1st in the line of succession at 10 years old. When London endured the Blitz during WW2, Elizabeth and Margaret were sent to stay at Windsor Castle until the danger ceased, while her parents boldly stayed in London. Toward the end of the war, Elizabeth began working as a car driver and mechanic, and was made an honorary member of the Auxiliary Territorial Service. She eventually returned to London to celebrate her country’s victory in WW2. During the war, Elizabeth began exchanging letters with her distant cousin Prince Philip Mountbatten (formerly of Greece and Denmark). They had met a few times prior to the war, where he served in the Navy, but the manner their relationship had changed through their letters. Philip proposed in 1947, and they married later that year. Elizabeth gave birth to a son, Charles, less than a year later and had a daughter, Anne, not long after. The stress of WW2 had a devastating impact on George VI’s health. He passed away from lung cancer in early 1952, making the 25-year old Elizabeth queen. Her coronation was held a year later. She gave birth to 2 more children, Andrew and Edward, in 1960 and 1964, respectively.

#onthisday 140 years ago Princess Beatrice, Duchess of Galliera was born at Eastwell Park, Kent, England. • Princess Beatrice Leopoldine Victoria of Edinburgh was the 5th child of Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh (later of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha) and Grand Duchess Maria Alexandrovna of Russia. She spent much of her early years in Malta, and was known as “Baby Bee” to her immediate family. When Beatrice was 9 years old, her father inherited the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, and the family promptly moved to Coburg. In 1902, Beatrice had a romance with her 1st cousin Grand Duke Michael Alexandrovich of Russia. Because the Russian Orthodox Church did not allow marriage between 1st cousins, Michael had to break off his relationship with Beatrice, devastating her. Making the situation more difficult was the divorce between her sister Victoria Melita and Ernst Louis, Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine, where Victoria Melita eloped with their other 1st cousin Grand Duke Kirill Alexandrovich of Russia and were exiled from Russia. At the wedding of Beatrice’s cousin Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg to Alfonso XIII of Spain, Beatrice met Infante Alfonso, Duke of Galliera. Because Beatrice refused to convert to Catholicism, they were exiled from Spain. They were allowed to return 3 years after their wedding in 1912, and Beatrice was received in the Catholic Church in 1912. Allegedly, King Alfonso made advances toward Princess Beatrice, which she rebuffed. Beatrice, her husband, and their 3 sons were expelled to Switzerland, but were allowed to return a few years later. They also lived in England for a time. The 1930s were a hard time for Beatrice and the Spanish Royal Family. The monarchy had been abolished, and tensions later led to a Civil War, which took the life of Beatrice’s 2nd son. In 1966, Beatrice died at her estate in El Botánico, aged 82.

Tiara Tuesday: the Vladimir Tiara • Also called the “Grand Duchess Vladimir Tiara”, this piece of jewelry was first owned by Grand Duchess Maria Pavlovna of Russia (formerly Duchess Marie of Mecklenburg-Schwerin) and was given to her as a wedding gift from her husband Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich of Russia. Although it has been modified a bit from its original style, the Vladimir Tiara has a series of 15 cabochon drops from the Cambridge emerald collection that can easily be replaced with pearls or worn without any hanging jewels. The piece has a diamond-encrusted structure that is surprisingly flexible. In the midst of revolution in Russia, Maria had left many of her precious jewels in her home. To save them from being stolen, a family friend smuggled them out of the country to safety. Maria herself escaped Russia in early 1920, although she died just a few months later. The tiara was passed to her only daughter, Grand Duchess Elena, who sold it to Queen Mary in 1921 to fund her family’s life in exile. Queen Mary introduced the Vladimir Tiara to the United Kingdom, but it is most often associated with Mary’s granddaughter, Elizabeth II. Elizabeth wore it frequently, and it is believed to had been one of her favorite pieces. The next wearer of the tiara was Princess Anne, the late Queen’s only daughter, in 1967. In fact, it was her 1st tiara appearance and she wore it for that year’s State Opening of Parliament. #onthisday 161 years ago Victoria Mountbatten, Marchioness of Milford Haven was born at Windsor Castle, Windsor, Berkshire, England. • Princess Victoria Alberta Elisabeth Mathilde Marie of Hesse and by Rhine was the eldest child of Louis IV, Grand Duke of Hesse and by Rhine and Princess Alice of the United Kingdom. Victoria and her 6 younger siblings were primarily raised in Darmstadt, but visited her mother’s family in England often. She was especially close with her sister Elisabeth, who she shared a room with. In 1873, Victoria’s younger brother fell from a window and died due to complications from the fall combined with hemophilia. In 1878 Victoria, 4 of her 5 surviving siblings, and her parents fell ill with diphtheria. The illness took the lives of Victoria’s mother and youngest sister, Marie. From then on, Victoria became somewhat of a maternal figure to her younger siblings at just 15 years old. She later described this time as “the end of her childhood”. On April 30 1884, Victoria married her 1st cousin once removed Prince Louis of Battenberg. Louis was a member of a morganatic branch of the Hessian royal family, but had adopted British nationality and served in the navy. The couple, along with their 4 children, lived between England, Germany, and Malta. Known for her key intellect and practical skills, she educated each of her children. Her youngest son, Louis, later said she was a “walking encyclopedia”.

#onthisday 212 years ago Louise, Queen of the Belgians was born in Palermo, Kingdom of Sicily. • Princess Louise-Marie Thérèse Charlotte Isabelle of Orléans was the eldest daughter of the future Louis Philippe, King of the French and Princess Maria Amalia of the Two Sicilies. As a child, she was given a strict religious upbringing by her mother and aunt, to whom she was very close. She had 8 siblings. In August of 1832, Louise married Leopold I, King of the Belgians. Leopold, who was 22 years Louise’s senior, was the widower of Princess Charlotte of Wales. As Leopold was Belgium’s 1st monarch, Louise was its 1st Queen Consort, and there had not been a mold for Louise to fit into when it came to her duties as Queen. King Leopold was allegedly very considerate in the way he treated his wife in the early days of their marriage. The match was very much arranged, and Louise was not enthusiastic about leading her home. However, after the birth of their last child in 1840, the pair began to drift apart. She was very shy, but a devoted mother who enjoyed a private family life with her children. When it was discovered that Leopold had taken a mistress, the public rallied to Louise’s side as opposed to her husband’s. Louise was not seen often in public, and did not travel much. Still, she travelled to England for the baptism of her great-niece by marriage Victoria, Princess Royal. She was also present for a state visit there in 1847. She enjoyed the Flemish coastal town of Ostend, and found great solitude there. Despite the fact that she was rarely seen out and about, she reportedly had political opinions that she kept well-hidden. Over the years, Louise’s health weakened greatly due to her several pregnancies and the stress of her family’s political situation. #onthisday 114 years ago Ingrid, Queen of Denmark was born at the Stockholm Palace, Stockholm, Sweden. • Princess Ingrid Victoria Sofia Louise Margareta was the 3rd child and only daughter of Gustaf VI Adolf, King of Sweden and Princess Margaret of Connaught. Ingrid’s parents were very hands-on in their care for their children, and her mother even founded a school for noble girls for Ingrid. In 1920, Ingrid’s mother tragically died of sepsis while she was 8 months pregnant with her 6th child. Her father later remarried Lady Louise Mountbatten, and Ingrid felt betrayed by this. It took a long time for Ingrid’s relationship with her father to heal. Ingrid grew to be a very attractive young woman, and questions regarding a suitable groom for her were a hot topic. In the end, she married Frederik, Crown Prince of Denmark in Stockholm Cathedral in 1935. The events of their wedding gained much media attraction. Just 1 week after the N*zi occupation of Denmark began, Ingrid gave birth to her 1st child, a daughter named Margrethe. Ingrid openly defied the occupation by taking bicycle rides and walks with Margrethe in her baby carriage out in the streets of Copenhagen. Her grandfather King Gustaf of Sweden, in concern for her safety, demanded for her to stop, but she refused of obey him. Ingrid had 2 other daughters, Benedikte and Anne-Marie. After becoming the Queen Consort of Denmark in 1947, she reformed the traditions of the Danish court and turned it into a more relaxed environment. She was interested in gardening and art. After her husband’s death in 1972, Ingrid’s eldest daughter Margrethe became the new Queen of Denmark in her own right, and Ingrid became the family matriarch. Throughout her life, she remained patron to numerous charitable organizations across Denmark. Queen Ingrid died on 7 November 2000 at Fredensborg Castle, age 90. She died in the presence of her 3 daughters and 10 grandchildren, and her funeral was attended by numerous royals and heads of state throughout Europe.
