#OnThisDay #KirbysDreamLand #ReyDedede #Kirby #DreamLand #GameBoy #Nintendo #RetroGaming #JuegosClásicos #Videojuegos #Gaming #NintendoGameBoy #GameDesign #PinkKirby #Videogames

Vested with CCT #OnThisDay in 2000, St. Peter’s Church in Allexton, #Leicestershire sits in an inviting tree-filled churchyard. This Grade II* listed 12th-Century church is well worth a visit, especially for the pair of lions guarding the door in a manner reminiscent of the grandeur of Venice or Verona. Once inside, you will find a remarkable #Norman arcade carved with a pattern of zig-zags and lozenge shapes. Released in April of 2015. “Sound & Color” is the 2nd studio album by the Alabama Shakes. I have a beautiful clear vinyl gatefold edition. Brittany Howard and band are outstanding and I can’t wait to see what they do next! It’s been a long time since the band has released new material. “Sound & Color” was a critical success and received 6 Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year. It ultimately won 4 for Best Alternative Music Album, Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical, as well as Best Rock Performance and Best Rock Song for “Don’t Wanna Fight”. It spawned 4 singles; “Don’t Wanna Fight” was the most successful. For this album the band listened to anything and everything for influence, without regard for its public reception in the end. They spent over a year in the studio, with no clear end goal, as they had not written any new songs due to their exhaustive touring schedule. “Sound & Color” is steeped in several different genres, touching on shoegaze (the shoegaze sound is characterised by an ethereal mixture of obscured vocals, guitar distortionand effects, feedback, and overwhelming volume,) to bands such as MC5. The band formed in Athens, Alabama in 2009. #brittanyhoward #alabamashakes #soundandcolor

“When hurting yourself feels right Long gone the will to fight Take the time to pull the weeds Choking flowers in your life…” -Jerry Cantrell Jerry Cantrell performing “Solitude” on April 27, 2002 at the Charlotte Center City Fest in Charlotte, North Carolina❤️ In slide 5, you can see a fan toss Jerry a shirt with Layne on it, and Jerry holds it up for the crowd❤️ This show was the night before Layne’s funeral. I shared this quote earlier, but I think it’s fitting for this post as well: “The shows I played between the time I got the word about Layne and Layne’s funeral were very important to me in terms of being able to continue on. It’s one of those things where if you take a break and allow things to settle in, it might be harder to get up again.” I didn’t get the space to in my posts earlier, so I’d like to mention Jerry’s bandmates for this show! We have William DuVall on guitar and vocals, Bevan Davies on drums, Adam Stanger on bass, Shawn Mathews on guitar and vocals, and Robert Trujillo actually comes out to play bass on a few songs. Jerry’s amp knocked out before this song. It would’ve happened during Castaway, which we don’t have footage of. So that’s why we see Jerry without his guitar here. This is such a beautiful, haunting performance❤️ It’s an emotional song to begin with, but there was clearly a lot of heavy emotions in the air in this performance. Jerry’s voice is beautiful, and the band sounds fantastic. This one hits me every time but I also love it so much❤️ Not my videos! Photos are screenshots from the video. Released on April 26, 1994. This album arrived in the mail on this day 4 years ago, and not by design. “Throwing Copper” is the 2nd studio album from Live. This is a special 180 gram edition on the “Music On Vinyl label.” It was produced by Jerry Harrison of the Talking Heads. Throwing Copper has sold over 8 million copies and was certified 8x platinum by the RIAA. This an exceptionally good LP. The cover art is a painting by artist Peter Howson, titled “Sisters of Mercy.” In 2005 it was sold for $186,000 by Christie’s in New York. In 2004 I was drinking a beer at the Marriott at the Philadelphia Airport, chatting with a young guy about music and near the end of our conversation he divulged he was the tour manager for Live, and lead singer, Ed Kowalczyk’s brother. Some great songs here, including; “I Alone,” “Iris,” “Lightning Crashes,” and “Selling the Drama.” #live #throwingcopper #lightningcrashes

Sylvia Plath (age 15/16) and her brother Warren at their home at 26 Elmwood Road, Wellesley, Massachusetts in 1948/09. . The #SylviaPlathCalendar - 89 years ago today: Sylvia Plath’s brother Warren Joseph was born 27 April 1935, 2.5 years after her and just one day after their mother‘s 29th birthday. Sadly, he died on 14 February 2021. He was 85 years old. . Upon his birth, their father Otto was very happy as he had wished for a son. Biographies claim that Warren’s birth “created a fissure in his sister’s closed world”, even though her mother tried to prepare her for the arrival of the new baby. As Plath wrote in the memoir of her early childhood “Ocean W-1212” (1962), published in ‘Johnny Panic and the Bible of Dreams’ (1977): “A baby! I hated babies. I who for two and a half years had been the center of a tender universe felt the axis wrench and a polar chill immobilize my bones. I would be a bystander...” . As adults, Sylvia and Warren had a good relationship and Sylvia often wrote him letters where she was more honest about her mental state as in these written to her mother. . In 1949, Warren started Phillips Exeter Academy in Exeter, New Hampshire on a scholarship and received a scholarship to Harvard in 1953. He was also a Fulbright Student at the University of Bonn in Germany from 1957 to 1958 and obtained a PhD from Harvard University in 1964 with a dissertation titled “Multiple-Path Syntactic Analysis of Russian” in the subject of Applied Mathematics at the Division of Engineering and Applied Physics. . #sylviaplath #sylviaplathbiography #otd #onthisday #warrenplath #ocean1212 #johnnypanicandthebibleofdreams #sylviaplathquote #wellesley #massachusetts #1940s #26elmwoodroad #aureliaplath #ottoplath #lovingsylviaplath

#onthisday On April 27, 1759, Mary Wollstonecraft was born in Spitalfields, London. A prolific writer, Wollstonecraft may be remembered as one of the founding feminist philosophers but she also wrote a travel narrative, various novels, a children’s book, a history of the French Revolution, and a conduct book. Her numerous literary endeavours notwithstanding, she is best known for “A Vindication of the Rights of Women” which she published in 1792. In this non-fiction piece Wollstonecraft argues that women are not at all inferior to men; they appear so at times only because they lack the same access to education. She thus rages against the imposed social order and calls for a better one founded on reason. Unfortunately, Mary Wollstonecraft died young: married to William Godwin in March 1797, she died in September of the same year, only 11 days after giving birth to their daughter Mary, who would later reach fame herself as the author of “Frankenstein”. Unfortunately when Mary Wollstonecraft’s private life became known to a wide audience following her husband’s publication of her memoir, her reputation was destroyed as people discovered her passionate love affairs outside of wedlock. The rise of 20th-century feminist movements, however, brought her back into the spotlight and gave her the recognition she deserves. #otd #onthisdayinhistory #history #historylover #historybuff #historynerd #historyteacher #literature #literaturelover #ela #elateacher #english #teacher #englishteacher #teachersofinstagram #teachersofig #teacherssupportteachers #feminism #womeninhistory #marywollstonecraft #avindicationoftherightsofwomen

NATIONAL MARITIME MUSEUM 1937 OTD Princess Elizabeth, aged 11 years old, boarded the Admiral’s Barge with her father King George VI and mother Queen Elizabeth. From Westminster Pier to Greenwich, the wharves along the river were decorated and thousands of cheering people watched as Queen Elizabeth opened the Queen’s House and the King declared the National Maritime Museum open. The party returned to Buckingham Palace by road, taking 20 minutes longer than the boat. Transport planners please note. Since Henry VII the Royal Family has had a close connection with Greenwich and with the sea. Henry VIII lived here, where many of his ships were built or fitted out. Elizabeth I was born here, where she knighted Francis Drake. Queen Anne of Denmark, Queen Henrietta Maria and Queen Mary II lived here. Charles II founded the Royal Observatory here in 1675 for ‘finding the longitude of places’. It was Queen Mary ordered the King Charles Wing of the palace be remodelled as a naval hospital. She also ordered that the buildings be split, to preserve the riverside view from the Queen’s House and providing an avenue leading from the river through the hospital grounds up to the Queen’s House. This gives the hospital its distinctive look, with buildings arranged in a number of quadrants or courts. Later William IV, known as the ‘sailor king’, was Lord High Admiral, and many princes followed him into the navy. Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh and Baron Greenwich, opened a new wing as royal patron of the museum. The Duke served in the Royal Navy, as did his son Prince Andrew and Grandson Prince William. The queen opened the Neptune Court, the new Royal Observatory and the Cutty Sark. The home of Greenwich Mean Time, the Prime Meridian and a centre for the study of astronomy. But the fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars…

Repost @nationalportraitgallery ・・・ "I do not wish women to have power over men; but over themselves." Writer and Feminist Mary Wollstonecraft was born #onthisday in 1759. A political radical and author of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792), Wollstonecraft is now regarded as one of the founders of modern British feminism. As a writer she made a powerful case for emancipating and educating women. She was a member of the London-based radical intellectual circle that included Tom Paine and William Godwin, whom she later married. She welcomed the French Revolution and travelled to Paris where she witnessed Louis XVI going to the guillotine in 1793. Tragically, she died after complications giving birth to her daughter Mary. Mary grew up to become a renowned author, known for her genre-defining novel ‘Frankenstein’ (1818) – often considered the first of its kind, she paved the way for science fiction writing. 📍 On display in Room 12 on Floor 3 🎨 Mary Wollstonecraft by John Opie, circa 1797 © National Portrait Gallery, London

What happened at the Battle of Carbisdale? On the 27th April 1650 the army of Scottish Royalists, led by James Graham the Marquess of Montrose, faced off against an army of Scottish Covenanters led by Colonel Archibald Strachan. James Graham was an experienced commander that had won several battles against the Parliamentarians and Covenanters during the First British Civil War. After losing the Battle of Philiphaugh in 1645, Graham fled to Norway. It wouldn’t be until the death of King Charles I that Montrose would return to Britain. When Montrose landed he had amassed a force of 1500 men, consisting of highlanders, levies and mercenaries. Shortly into his campaign in Scotland he was intercepted by Colonel Archibald Strachan, leading a force 700 strong. Strachan planned to advance like his force was much smaller in size. He successfully routed Graham’s cavalry before launching a fierce assault onto his infantry. The fierce cavalry charge routed many of the levied troops, unprepared for this intensity of fighting. Strachan then unleashed his reserves which caused the entire army to rout. The casualties for the Royalists were devastating, with around six hundred killed and four hundred captured. The Covenanter losses amounted to two wounded and one dead. Montrose survived the battle, but was captured soon afterwards, and was executed at the Mercat Cross in Edinburgh on the 21st of May, 1650. 📷: Rhodri Ross

Today marks exactly 47 years since Elvis performed at the Milwaukee Arena. However, the nearly 12,000 spectators in the audience on April 27, 1977, witnessed an Elvis who was far from his heyday. As usual, the female part of the audience screamed hoarse as soon as Elvis appeared on stage, all while he handed out scarves at a rapid pace. According to Larry Geller, the fans were like mad, beyond the usual confusion and hysteria. Damien Jaques’ review in The Milwaukee Journal the next day testified that it was sadly obvious that something was amiss. Jaques described Elvis’s performance as half-hearted, if not unworthy of an entertainer of Elvis’s stature. Forgotten lyrics, weak voice, and mumbling banter are just a sample of the criticism. Jaques also labeled Elvis pulling out the lyrics to read before performing ”My Way” as the evening’s biggest insult to the audience, stating that the audience had every right to feel cheated; they deserved better. When Elvis received the final applause and walked from one side of the stage to the other, kissing girls, children, and old ladies, shaking hands with people, and receiving flowers, Elvis’s entourage stood below the stage holding back the crowd, ensuring nobody could break through and climb onto the stage. Elvis seemed lost, as if he couldn’t see properly and stumbled, spraining his foot, as he tried to descend the few steps and reach the awaiting limousine. Guards rushed forward to help him, while Elvis’s crew, along with local and hired policemen, prevented a riot. Elvis limped into the limousine, which promptly drove off with a string of squealing fans in its wake. On April 27, 1983, a bust of the late Senate Majority leader Nicholas D. Coleman was unveiled in the capitol rotunda. When Cass Gilbert designed the capitol, he intentionally included many alcoves and niches where artwork could be added later. Over the years, busts memorializing significant political and civic leaders have been placed in many of these spaces. Nicholas D. “Nick” Coleman was first elected to the MN Senate in 1962, the same year as Wendell Anderson and Rudy Perpich who both went on to become state governors. Though Coleman did not achieve that same position, he became the first Democratic Senate Majority leader in 114 years when he took on the role in 1973. His eighteen year career in the state Senate emphasized both human rights and government reform. Through his leadership, the legislative branch was strengthened and elevated to a more coequal role alongside the executive. Coleman’s particular areas of concern included taxes, labor, environment, and education. He was the first Minnesota public official to call for a school financing method later known as the “Minnesota Miracle” which shifted financing from the property tax to the income tax. Though Coleman ran for both state governor and U.S. Senator, he did not attain either position. He retired from the state Senate in 1981 and sadly passed away two months later from leukemia. #OTD #OnThisDay #MNStateCapitol

"I do not wish women to have power over men; but over themselves." Writer and Feminist Mary Wollstonecraft was born #onthisday in 1759. 📍 On display in Room 12 on Floor 3 Hashtags: #NationalPortraitGallery #Portraiture 🎨 Mary Wollstonecraft by John Opie, circa 1797 © National Portrait Gallery, London

“Godzilla, King of the Monsters!” was released on this day in 1956. Perhaps the most important Godzilla film next to its original Japanese counterpart, this heavily edited and Americanized version of “Gojira” was the outside world’s introduction to Godzilla. Raymond Burr emerged as a standout in this new version, catapulting Godzilla into a household name. This would be the de-facto version on home video in the United States until the original uncut Japanese 1954 film was released on DVD in the early 2000’s.

#OnThisDay April 27, 1667 Blind and impoverished, John Milton sells Paradise Lost to a printer for £10, so that it could be entered into the Stationers' Register. The story of John Milton's sale of "Paradise Lost" to a printer for £10 is a poignant chapter in the life of one of England's greatest poets and literary figures. By 1667, Milton was facing significant financial hardship, compounded by his blindness and advancing age. Despite these challenges, Milton remained determined to share his epic masterpiece with the world, and he saw the opportunity to have "Paradise Lost" entered into the Stationers' Register as a crucial step in achieving that goal. The Stationers' Register was a record book maintained by the Stationers' Company of London, which served as a form of copyright protection for authors and publishers in seventeenth-century England. In order for a work to be published legally, it had to be entered into the Stationers' Register, thereby securing the author's rights and preventing unauthorized copies from being printed. In the case of "Paradise Lost," Milton recognized the importance of having his work officially registered in order to protect his rights as the author and ensure that he would receive recognition and compensation for his labor. Despite his financial struggles, Milton was unwilling to compromise on the integrity of his work or surrender control over its publication. Faced with the prospect of securing a printer willing to take on the formidable task of publishing "Paradise Lost," Milton made the difficult decision to sell the rights to the poem for a modest sum of £10. This decision was undoubtedly influenced by Milton's dire financial circumstances, as well as his determination to see his masterpiece brought to light despite the obstacles in his path. Happy 73rd birthday to Ace Frehley, born on this day in 1951. Paul Daniel “Ace” Frehley is best known as the former lead guitarist and a co-founding member of Kiss. He played with the band from its inception in 1973 until his departure in 1982. After leaving Kiss, Ace Frehley embarked on a solo career, which was put on hold when he rejoined Kiss in 1996 for a highly successful reunion tour. I’ve read his biography and it’s great. As with many rockers, he’s lucky to be alive. Frehley’s 2nd tenure with Kiss lasted until 2002, when he left at the conclusion of what was originally purported to be the band’s Farewell Tour. Frehley has stated, “I am an anomaly, I’m an unschooled musician, I don’t know how to read music, but I’m one of the most famous guitar players in the world, so go figure.“ “Rock and Roll Over” is the 5th studio album from Kiss, released in November of 1976. This is the 1st Kiss album without a writing credit from Ace Frehley. This is also the last album with which I had any interest with band, however I’d continue to see them live. They became a pure novelty to me by this time and I had grown out of them. The album was produced by the legendary Eddie Kramer. #acefrehley #rockandrollover #kiss

Happy 65th birthday to Marco Pirroni, born on this day in 1959. Marco Francesco Andrea Pirroni is a guitarist, songwriter and record producer, best known as the original guitarist for Adam and the Ants. He has also worked with Sinéad O’Connor, Siouxsie and the Banshees and many others from the late 1970s to the present day. Pirroni’s 1st appearance performing on stage was with Siouxsie and the Banshees at their debut show, in 1976’s; Sid Vicious was on the drums. Marco joined Adam and the Ants in 1980 as the lead guitarist and co-songwriter, writing 2 UK #1 singles and an another 4 Top 10 hits, with Ant. He performed on the previous debut LP “Dirk Wears White Sox,” prior to joining the band, (Guitarist Matthew Ashman and drummer David Barbarossa quit after that release and went on to form Bow Wow Wow.) The 2 albums Marco co-wrote for Adam and the Ants, “Kings of the Wild Frontier” and “Prince Charming,” both made the Top 10 in the UK Albums Chart. When the Ants came through Gainesville FL in 84, I opened the Metro nightclub on a closed night, for a private gathering for Marco. It was a surreal night for sure. “Kings of the Wild Frontier” is the 2nd album from Adam and the Ants. It was released in November of 1980. This album introduced the “Burundi beat” sound to popular music. #marcopirroni #adamandtheants #kingsofthewildfrontier

Released on April 26, 1980. “Los Angeles” is the debut studio album from X. It was produced by Doors keyboardist Ray Manzarek, and he plays keys on many of the tracks. It includes a cover of the 1967 Doors song “Soul Kitchen.” A killer LP. My favorite song here is “Johnny Hit and Run Paulenz.” It is considered one of the best punk albums ever recorded. Love it! The band was apart from the crowd with poetic lyrics and excellent vocal harmonies between Exene and John Doe. A great punk album with country, ballads, and rockabilly mixed in.This album spawned an avalanche of copycat bands. #x #losangeles #johnnyhitandrunpauline #raymanzarek

#OnThisDay in 1827, the Northern Dispensary opens at what was then the very northern frontier of New York City. Its mission, embedded in a restrictive deed which stands to this day, is to serve the needy with medical services. Over the years, those it has served have included poet Edgar Allan Poe, and today it includes the clients of @godslovenyc.
