7th Citadel: Initial Impressions Long story short, I’m really enjoying 7th Citadel! Great quality of life improvements. Here are a few of my thoughts about half way through the first story book. +Bite Sized Scenarios: the first several scenarios have pushed me to explore the general cardinal directions and usually play in about an hour. I don’t feel the overwhelming sense of directionlessness I had in some 7th Continent curses. +Items and Combat: items no longer have finite uses but mainly have a chance to break. Combat is a fun mini game that I actually enjoy and can mitigate damage from. +Town and Upgrades: your performance in a scenario allows you to upgrade your base and character. It’s nothing too complex but I like seeing the progression. +/- Health: The numeric health value you allows you the opportunity to push your luck as you can spend health to refresh your deck. At the same time this number feels like a timer. The closer you get to zero the more likely you are fail to return. -Scale: maybe it is just the scenarios I’ve played so far, but I feel funneled to explore only a certain direction and pursue the scenario goals. I haven’t hit that sense of awe at seeing the map unfurl on the table before me. So there you have it. How does 7th Citadel match up to 7th Continent? Room for both in a collection? Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is just awe-inspiring! Back in 2022, we set off on an adventure to Disneyland to check it out. Walking into the area is almost otherworldly, and I was immediately taken back to my childhood, imagining that I was Luke Skywalker wielding his lightsaber against the Empire. In reality, it was my scrawny little self swinging a stick in the backyard making lightsaber noises. I couldn’t stop the tears from flowing when I turned the corner and saw the Millennium Falcon right in front of me. Star Wars had always been a part of my life, and seeing it all right there in front of me was more emotional than I thought it would be. And it’s the little details that only fans would see and remember. From Oga’s Cantina to Savi’s Workshop… Dok-Ondar’s to Rise of the Resistance… you really felt like you were on Batuu, with stormtroopers on the patrol and Rey and Chewbacca making the rounds. If you have about 30-40 minutes of filler game time to waste, Cat in the Box is a good game to fill the time. It's a game that adds interesting twists to the traditional trick-taking (Bridge would be the OG game) genre. In each round, each player would put out a card to try to win the set. The twists? 1. The cards aren't coloured by default, so players would self-determine the colour suit each cycle - one could thus lie there's no more cards of the winning colour but you risk getting caught on your lie if you trigger a "paradox" 2. each number of the four colours can only be called out once (there are markers to indicate what has already been called out) so one may not have the right cards towards the end of the round for the remaining numbers/colours to be called 3. There's a prediction bit on how many sets each player would win for that round and if you predict correctly, you get bonus points for the longest 'chain' of cards you played. Starship Interstellar di Davide Calze e Andrea Crespi. Progetto Kickstarter che doveva vedere la luce l'anno scorso invece ha subito, come spesso capita, un ritardo e in questo caso di circa un anno. Trama: il sole sta diventando una nana rossa e dobbiamo trovare risorse per costruire un'astronave per salvare l'umanità prima che la terra venga inglobata. Il gioco si compone di 2 macro fasi dove nella prima si fanno azioni atte a prendere risorse, carburante, viaggiare e studiare tecnologie. Tutto quello che raccogliamo possiamo spenderlo nella seconda fase dove cercheremo di salvare persone, costruire i vari pezzi dell'astronave o tracciare la rotta... Tutte queste azioni danni più o meno punti. Finita questa seconda fase c'è la facendo reset finché morte non ci separi: nel caso il sole esploda si contano i punti altrimenti dobbiamo aspettare che 2 condizioni di fine partita si verifichino. Note positive: No. Note negative: partiamo dalla plancia. È inutilmente gigantesca. C'è tutto il sistema solare grandezza 1:1 e questa occupa il 75% del tabellone. Inutile perché il gioco dura circa 3/4 turni e sti pianeti non hanno tutto sto tempo per fare tutto il giro. I pianeti sono bucati perché la prima fase del progetto prevedeva che le astronavi fossero davvero agganciate al pianeta ma poi hanno cambiato ma i pianeti sono rimasti bucati. Le risorse vengono tenute nascoste ma non dietro allo schermo che sarebbe molto comodo ma bensì in una scatola poco accessibile. La parte della rotta da tracciare è fatta di piccole tessere così come la parte dell'astronave. Manca il secondo tracciato dell'ordine di turno così quando passi ti metti già nella posizione per il turno successivo. Questa è solo la parte estetica. Passiamo al gioco vero e proprio: la parte di esplorazione spaziale, nonostante ha un 75% di tabellone, è debole, la puoi fare una, max 2 volte per turno... E nonostante tutto le risorse alla fine avanzano: abbiamo salvato tutta l'umanità, costruito tutta l'astronave e tracciato quasi tutte le rotte ed è avanzata roba. Le tecnologie sono mal gestite. Alcune ti permettono di prendere più risorse ma altre sono perfettamente inutili: alcune [continua nei commenti]

Mind MGMT is a crazy hidden movement game from @offthepagegames !! We managed to grab one of the few deluxe copies they had at Gen Con right after the first print run delivered! Jake also got to meet the artist for the game and got an original drawing done on the bottom of the box top. Mind MGMT is a game based on a comic series of the same name. In this game, one person is playing the role of the corrupt organization of Mind MGMT, trying to recruit new psychic agents to carry out their agenda. The rest of the players are rogue agents using their own psychic powers to put a stop to their former employer. The rogue agents will be hunting the Mind MGMT recruiter around the game board by asking questions and using dry-erase mental note tokens to track their movements. They win if they are able to track the recruiters' location and capture them by being in the same space. The recruiter has a small dry erase map they keep behind a player shield to map their path as they secretly move around the board. If a player is ever on a location they were in and ask if they were ever there, the recruiter has to say how many turns ago they were. The recruiter wins if they are able to recruit 12 psychics or survive 16 turns without being caught. Each side has a few tools that help them along the way. The more you play, the more abilities you unlock. We have only played this game at 2 players, but we would love to play it at higher player counts! The cat and mouse game becomes really intense as the rogue agents hone in on the recruiter. The tension is really high being the recruiter as you try to slip away as quickly as you can. If you haven't played this one, we highly recommend you track it down if you're into hidden movement games!!

It's witchcraft...wicked witchcraft, but there's nothing taboo about this. We tried the Shapeshifters / Omens module in our latest game of Septima by @mindclash_games tonight, which adds another layer to the game. The ruleset is pretty straightforward, but it opens up the decision-making. No longer do you get your discarded cards back at the end of the rlseason, you have to play Shapeshift (replaces Chant) to turn into one of your two asymmetric animals that have abilities and a limited set of 4 actions that you can no play but every card you don't match now reduces your suspicion. Voidfall (@mindclash_games) has pretty much everything that you could wish for in a game- certainly everything I look for in a game. Deep strategy, hundreds of paths to take, a game that will reward the time invested in thinking about your turns, but will also try to foil your plans and make you weigh up the short term tactics versus your long term strategy. It looks visually stunning on the table (the galactic box, anyway) with multilayered boards, sculpted miniatures and beautiful artwork. Various technology cards, or scoring agenda cards, will mix up every game you play, and modify how you will tackle the enemy. And, of course, it can be played solo. Taking a look at the setup for Age of Rome from @teetotumgamestudios Players seek to become Rome’s new emperor by building up provinces and balancing war, politics, trade and religion. There is an area control element that plays out on the board that rotates “lazy Susan-style.” It doesn’t look terribly complex and I’m excited to jump in. Just getting a look at the components at this point. I had to get a glimpse at Age of Rome since I’m pretty excited about the publisher’s next Kickstarter called Restart and it was great to see the quality they bring to the table. Restart is a time travel adventure where players work to fix various problems in the world. As we know with time travel, every action has a reaction and Restart seems to breed unexpected circumstances. Wonderlands war Deluxe von @mirakulus.spiele Erstpartie zu zweit. Das Regeldtudium geht total einfach von der Hand, sie beizubringen geht auch super, dauert aber dann doch so 20 Minuten. Beim Spielaufbau gibt's einiges zu tun, dauert demnach auch so um die 5 bis 10 Minuten. Dann geht's aber schön fluffig voran. Bei Wonderlands War handelt es sich um ein Bag Building Spiel. Um Siegpunkte zu machen muss in umkämpften Gebieten der Sieg im Kampf davon getragen werden. Kampfstärke und weitere Vorteile bekommt von den im Kampf gezogenen Chips aus seinem Beutel. Das Spiel teilt sich in 2 Phasen auf. Die Teeparty Phase. Hier wählen die Spieler abwechselnd Karten aus der Mitte und bekommen die darauf abgebildeten Boni. Neue Chips, Wunderländer (entweder als Miniatur in ein Gebiet oder als Chips in den Beutel), Verbesserungen fürs eigene Tableau, Verbündete in Gebiete und viel mehr. Die Kampf Phase In der die Gefechte in den Gebieten ausgetragen werden. Dabei wird erst die initiale Kampfstärke bestimmt und dann ziehen alle am Kampf beteiligten Fraktionen gleichzeitig immer einen Chip aus ihrem Beutel und handeln deren Effekte ab. So bekommt man Kampfstärke dazu, kann Chips Schmieden und andere besondere Effekte der Chips ausführen. Aber auch negative Wahnsinnschips können gezogen werden, die die Truppenstärke verringern, wodurch man im schlimmsten Fall vom Kampf ausscheidet. Wonderlands war ist in der Deluxe Version mit den Deluxe Chips echt schön anzusehen und zu spielen. Das klackern der Chips im Beutel ist toll. Auch mechanisch machts mir viel Spaß. Die Teeparty Phase ist super, da man tolle Sachen bekommt. In der Kampf Phase ist dann etwas Glück gefragt, dass man die tollen Chips dann auch zieht. Außerdem haben die 5 Fraktionsboards unterschiedliche Fähigkeiten, cool! Zu zweit schwächelt Wonderlands War aber ein bisschen. Manchmal muss ich nur den Widerstand übertreffen und Kämpfe gar nicht wirklich, die burgen haben 2 baustadien bis sie fertiggestellt sind und ich darf keine Wetten abschließen wer den Kampf gewinnt. Spaß gemacht hat mir die Partie zu zweit aber trotzdem sehr. Um so mehr freu ich mich auf die nächste Partie, dann vielleicht zu 3. Oder 4.

Updates to the game room!!! So, I’ve been meaning to get into the game room and get it in shape to do another walkthrough… and I managed to snap a couple of pics in the process. The biggest changes are more storage (duh!) for more games, as well as some different signs here and there. I hung up my 7 foot map of middle earth above the stairs which turned out great! There are two gaming tables… the big one for D&D and other big games, and a smaller one for card games and more general use. While the big table is nice, it’s tough to play games without everyone having to stand up and reach across the table. So the little octagon table is amazing to have. 10 chairs to mix and match between the two as well as a loveseat for lounging in between sessions. This truly is my happy place. And I’m so blessed and humbled to be able to have a game room. For the longest time, the games were relegated to the hall closet and we played on the dining room table… so having a dedicated gaming space is truly a dream come true!

Finally had some time to give Imperial Miners a try! It's a fun little game with only 10 turns to dig your mine and score as much as possible. Played it with some coffee after getting the kids to bed and I think it's perfect for that. The solo takes about 30 minutes so it doesn't overstay its welcome and the progression is fun. Had a wonderful medieval weekend, spending time at Glastonbury Abbey Medieval Fayre and playing a couple of thematic games - Flamecraft and Pillars of the Earth! It was very exciting to see some jousting and battles played out in the arena, and hear some fantastic medieval music played live in the Abbot's Kitchen. What is the latest rulebook that gave you trouble? I'm sure that your answer isn't the one for Brew by @pandasaurus_games as it's exceptionally well organised. I'm joining #rulebookreview a monthly hashtag by @diaries_of_a_geek for the first time so that I can talk about it. 📝 The first thing to note is how it repeatedly uses page layout to its advantage. On every page things are broken up in differently coloured sections which helps you absorb new information in small chuncks. Whenever an illustration could be used in place of a wall of text, it does so and these illustrated examples are clear and large (they take up a majority of page instead of being relegated to a corner). 📑 The order in which you are presented with the information is also well thought out. It doesn't mention stuff until they are relevant- for example the game uses 'element dice' but their different powers are only explained at the end of the rulebook after you have already grasped how they fit in the game's overall structure. Same goes for other additional rules which you can find at the end. ❌ My only minor gripe would be that the set up of the next round is explained twice- so it even over-explained things. I also appreciate when there is a rules summary on the last page which wasn't the case here. 📌 Finally I love that common questions and misunderstandings were anticipated and addressed as soon as a new rule was introduced. First Rat —————————— First Rat is a set collection race game where players are rat-astrounauts (Ratrounauts) that try to build a ship and get to the cheese moon. —————————— Each turn players advance their rats 1-3 spaces on the path to the finish line. On the way they collect ingredients to build parts of the rocket, release more rats from their lair and purchase things like comic books, soda cans or bottle caps. They use those things to advance on various tracks that give the players various victory points.
