If you like CSI, historical fiction novels, true crime, or the legend of Anastasia I think you will definitely enjoy this book. 4.5 ⭐️ The story of the Romanov family has fascinated people on an international scale for over a century. The author approaches this famed story with a personal connection, and his passion for this subject is evident on every page. This nonfiction story is told in 2 parts. The first part through the memory of the author’s grandmother, Anna. Detailing her family’s perilous journey as they fought for their lives, and eventually fled their homeland of Russia when the Bolsehviks rose to power and slaughtered the Imperial family. The second part is told through the author’s own perspective. Explaining how he ended up being a champion for the discovery of the Romanov family. Helping to uncover the truth of what happened to them, and provide a proper burial to honor their memories. The first part of this book read more like a historical fiction novel, it was a heartbreaking journey that Anna and her family had to endure. The sheer strength they showed during the destruction that surrounded them was astonishing. The second part is written more like a true crime story. It can get pretty technical with all the forensic details, but the author did such a great job at explaining the process of forensic sciences. I’m not the most scientific minded person, if I could understand it you can too! Part 2 also shows the political loopholes that had to be found in order for the research teams to get around Russian bureaucracy. I learned so much from this book, and highly recommend it. It was heartbreaking, educational, and full of hope. This was a fantastic way for the author to honor his grandmother and those like her that faced a dangerous adversary and chose to stand up to it. In Ep. 52 we talked with A GENTLEMAN IN MOSCOW showrunner Ben Vanstone about the casting (photo 1) of the series from Alexandre’s university friend Mishka, to the Hotel Metropol’s staff and clientele. During the conversation we briefly reference stories of real-life African Americans who were in Russia during the time A GENTLEMAN IN MOSCOW takes place including a 1988 article by best-selling author @jamesmcbrideauthor (“The Color of Water”) when he was a reporter for “The Washington Post” titled “Yelena Khanga’s Voyage of Discovery: A Black Soviet Journalist Learning and Teaching in the Land of Her Grandparents.” In the 2nd photo are Yelena Khanga’s grandparents Oliver Golden and Bertha Bialek Golden. Khanga documents her family’s story in the book “Soul to Soul: A Black Russian Jewish Woman’s Search for Her Roots” (written with Susan Jacoby). Listen to episode 52 and our conversation about A GENTLEMAN IN MOSCOW with Ben Vanstone wherever you listen to your favorite podcasts. The series is based on the bestselling novel by Amor Towles. Many congratulations to graduating History Honors Student, Nick Sessums! His thesis, “Parallel Nations: Ukrainian, Russian, & Imperial Identity in Right-Bank Little Russia,” earned Highest Honors. His advisor was Dr. Matthew Payne, & his other committee members were Dr. Ellie Schainker, & Dr. Hubert Tworzecki. ** Nick has always been deeply interested in both world history & global affairs. He feels privileged to have been able to combine those interests in his thesis. After beginning his research, Nick traveled to Krakow, Poland, for a month last summer to volunteer with All Hands & Hearts, an international NGO, on their program supporting Ukrainian refugees. He sent us a photo of him doing on-site renovation of a community center for Ukrainian refugees in Krakow. Nick hopes to have a chapter of his thesis published in the Central Europe Yearbook. He hopes to find a job at a government I.T. contractor for which he has interned the last 2 summers. (Good luck with both of those goals, Nick!) ** @sxssums @emoryphialphatheta @emoryalumni @emorycollege #Krakow #Ukraine #RussianHistory @emorylibrary

“The son of Ivan IV the Terrible and his first wife, Anastasiya Romanovna Zakharina-Yureva, Fyodor succeeded his father on March 19, 1584.” “Being both physically weak and feebleminded, however, he took no part in government affairs, which were dominated by his wife’s brother, Boris Godunov.” “Godunov was, therefore, responsible for the major achievements of Fyodor’s reign—the elevation of the metropolitan see of Russia to a patriarchate (1589), the recovery in 1595 of lands near the Gulf of Finland that had been lost to Sweden in 1583, and the strengthening of Russia’s control over western Siberia and territory in the Caucasus.” “When Fyodor died childless in 1598, the Rurik dynasty became extinct and the throne of Russia was transferred, by vote of a zemsky sobor (“assembly of the land”), to Godunov.” Milestones in Russian history, by Seth Ronald, published in 1968; “Giles Fletcher, an Englishman living at the time, wrote of Feodor in his book The Russe Commonwealth..” “The Emperor that now is called Theodore Ivanovich is for his person of a mean stature, somewhat low and gross, of a sallow Complexion and inclining to the dropsy, hawknosed, unsteady in his pace, by reason of some weakness of his limbs, heavy and inactive, yet commonly smiling almost to laughter.” “For quality otherwise, simple and slow-witted, but very gentle, and of an easy nature, quiet, merciful, of no martial disposition, nor greatly apt for matters of policy, very superstitious and infinite that way.” “Besides his own private devotions at home, he goeth every week commonly on pilgrimage to some monastery or other that is nearest at hand.” Follow my 2nd page @historicalsources144 where I’ll be providing sources and more evidence to back up what I’m saying - - #blackhistory #blackhistory365 #blackhistoryfacts #blackhistoryeveryday #blackhistoryiseveryday #blackhistorymatters #blackhistoryyear #blackhistoryfact #unfilteredblackhistory #russianicon #russianhistory #europeanhistory #medievalhistory #realhistory #historyfacts

Obr43 uniform (Soviet Union) The "gimnasterka" tunic was in service in the militaries of Russia for a century or more. It first began to appear in the Tsarist Russian Army in the 1870s, and would not be replaced by something more modern until 1969 (although some remained in service after this). Naturally in that time it went through some changes. The Bolsheviks, keen on discarding any elements of the Red Army's uniforms that retained a "Tsarist" feel, got rid of the traditional rank structure and the accompanying insignia. Rank, as it existed in the 1920s, was instead worn on the sleeve. Eventually the Soviets realized that this was no way to run a military, and so the Tsarist-style rank system was reintroduced in 1935, to be worn on the collar tabs. In turn, this insignia was found to be difficult to see in combat, and so shoulder boards were reinstated in full in 1943. The stand-and-fall collar was also removed. At first, officers were the only ones given chest pockets, followed by women in September 1944, and finally all ranks from early 1945 (although pocketless tunics remained in production until 1948). I will confess that I am not particularly skilled when it comes to uniforms like this. However, in consultation with some of my more knowledgeable colleagues (who can chime in if they like, as I don't remember their usernames here), the material used on this uniform is not of wartime manufacture. The buttons and perhaps the shoulder boards have likely also been replaced, as those tend to wear out quickly but are pristine here, unlike the rest of the uniform. However, there is ghosting from the Order of the Red Star - whoever wore it originally was likely a World War II veteran. The shoulder boards on this uniform are from before 1955, at which point they were changed to a solid color. The boards on this uniform have black piping, for technical troops. #soviet #sovietunion #ussr #cccp #russia #russian #wwii #gpw #militaryhistory #russianhistory #soviethistory #coldwarhistory #wwiihistory #military #coldwar #history #uniform #militaryuniform #redarmy #vintage #collection #infantry #warsawpact #sowjet #udssr #russland

Women in Russian History from the Tenth to the Twentieth Century by Natalia Pushkareva. Published in Stroud. This book presents the first general survey of Russian women's history for many years. Following a broadly chronological sequence, each section of the book opens by focusing on women who were part of the ruling elite in each era. Among well-known figures are Catherine the Great and Sofia, half-sister of Peter the Great, who was imprisoned in a convent after her failed coup to overthrow him. The book also relates the lives of less familiar but fascinating women. This book is essential contribution to the history of Russian women. #russianwomen #russianhistory #womenshistory #russianstyle #russianlife #russianfashion #russiantradition #russiancustoms #marriage #womenslife #russianceremonies #catherinethegreat #motherrussiabooks #motherrussiabooksmelbourne #russianbooksmelbourne #booksforsale

Russian books in Melbourne where we live. A beautiful, sunny, bright autumn day in Melbourne and we invite you to the Dandenong Ranges. And the book is - The Cossacks by B. Bartos-Höppner. Published in London by Oxford University Press. Illustrated. From the moment when Mitya first saw Yermak, the great and fearless Cossack leader, he knew that nothing else mattered but to go with him, if need be, to the ends of the earth. And so, although he was only fifteen, Mitya at last persuaded Yermak to let him join his Cossack troops, and fight with them on their great campaign to open up a way into Siberia for the Czar of Russia. Russia at that time was threatened on all sides by the cruel Tartars; it was a huge, wild land, frozen and barren for half the year. It was the march across the Urals very dangerous and full of hardship. #cossack #yermak #siberia #ural #russianhistory #imperialrussia #tartars #folkhero #leader #russianbooksinmelbourne #dayinmelbourne #dandenongranges #australiannature #australianbirds #motherrussiabooks #motherrussiabooksmelbourne #russianbooksmelbourne #booksforsale #australianphotography #weekendinmelbourne

Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna of Russia, consort of Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich and sister of Empress Alexandra Feodorovna photographed by Hayman Selig Mendelssohn in 1887. The first image was colourised by Klimbim. After the assassination of her husband in 1905 the Grand Duchess abandoned her former way of life and sold all of her jewels. She became a nun and participated in extensive and heavy charity. After she was murdered by the Bolsheviks in 1917 she was recognised as a Saint by the Russian Orthodox Church. After her husband expelled 20,000 Jews from Moscow overnight with no notice by simply surrounding thousands of family homes with soldiers, she said ‘God will punish us severely’.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ #TheLastGrandDuchess is a heart-warming tribute to the final imperial family of Romanoffs, who were once the rulers of Russia. As someone who was once captivated by their story, I was thrilled to revisit some of the fascinating tales I had learned earlier. The book provides a unique glimpse into the tumultuous era of the Russian Revolution and the intricate ways in which people governed their empire. On the whole, "The Last Grand Duchess" is a poignant and touching story that delves into the final years of Olga's life. The reader is introduced to Olga's romantic interests, her hopes and dreams for the future, and the ultimate act of kindness she bestowed upon Russian soldiers. This book is an excellent starting point for anyone who wishes to learn more about Russia's last emperor and the fascinating history of the #Romanoff family. It's a fast-paced, light read that provides some insightful information, but be warned, it will leave you with a heavy heart. The review of #BrynTurnbull historical fiction novel is posted on my blog #AlinasReadingCorner ✒️💻 #RussianRevolution #RussianHistory #HistoricalFiction

A DELIGHTFUL AFTERNOON ON BROADWAY ... ‘The Crown’ creator Peter Morgan tackles Putin’s Rise to Power in new play ‘Patriots’ now playing at the Barrymore Theatre on Broadway. The play is about the rise of Russian oligarchs, Vladimir Putin, and the downfall of the USSR. And, the many oligarchs who profited off that fall and the rise of a young, not particularly promising-seeming apparatchik by the name of Vladimir Putin. Inside, the action onstage opens in a blingy post-perestroika bar, then hurdles to the corridors of the Kremlin and to reputations and great fortunes that are being made and destroyed. Among them, the fortune of Russian oligarch Boris Berezovsky, as played here by Michael Stuhlbarg. A fasnicating look at history as seen through the eyes of playwright Peter Morgan. The cast is superb. Michael Stuhlbarg and Will Keen portraying Putin is an excellent fit. Definetly has Putin’s walk down pack. NOTE : As a history lover, I always like honoring our great theatre landmarks that should NEVER be taken for granted. Sadly, many were destroyed in the past. The Ethel Barrymore Theatre is a Broadway theater opened in 1928. The theater named in honor of the great late actress Ethel Barrymore. Both the facadeand the auditorium interior are New York City landmarks. In 1910, Grand Duchess Olga Nikolaevna of Russia persuaded her younger sister, Maria Nikolaevna to write a letter to their mother asking if Olga be given her own room and be allowed to let down her dresses. Maria tried to persuade her mother it was her idea to write the letter: 11th May, 1910 My dear Mama! Are you well? I want to tell you that Olga would really like to have a room of her own in Peterhof, because she and Tatiana have way too many things and way too little space. Mama how old were you when you got your own room? Please tell me if this can be arranged. Mama, how old were you when you started wearing long dresses? You should not think that Olga also wants to wear long dresses. Mama when you transfer both of us or just Olga, I am thinking it would be convenient to same place where Anastasia had diphtheria. [crossed out] Mama since you wanted Tatiana [end crossed out] I kiss you, Maria P.S I made this up to write to you. Presenting Count Mikhail Nikolayevich Sumarokov-Elston. Born in Yalta (then part of the Russian Empire) in 1893. Sumarokov-Elston was a Russian tennis player. He competed in two events at the 1912 Summer Olympics. Apart from his dominance in the Russian national championships he was a Maltese champion and various French Riviera titleholder. During the outbreak of WWI, Sumarokov-Elston volunteered for the Russian Red Cross motorized ambulance unit and was assigned to the Black Sea Fleet. He is pictured here around this time in 1914. He died in London’s University College Hospital in 1970 and was buried in Chiswick New Cemetery. In 2002 he was inducted to the Russian Tennis Hall of Fame for his sporting achievements. When I first saw the 1914 photo of Sumarokov-Elston (then aged 21), I gasped. He has such a calm yet knowing countenance. I imagine he was utterly breathtaking when he smiled. Those pursed lips, dressed with a fine dusting of moustache. And that cowslick to the front of his hair is beyond aborable. It seems to hint at a tendency for being slighty cheeky yet always playful. #hotedwardians #1900s #1910s #tennis #tennishistory #mikhailsumarokovelston #russianmen #ww1 #thegreatwar #worldwar1 #russianhistory #handsomemenofthepast #boyishgoodlooks

Commemorative plates commemorating the imperial visit of Tsar Nicholas II & Tsarina Alexandra for their state visit to Paris in 1896, with a medallion portrait of the Tsar & Tsarina with historical vignettes and decorations to border. These plates were manufactured by Utzschneider & Compagnie in Sarreguemines(France) They are decorated with portraits of Nicholas II and Alexandra Feodorovna, in Art Nouveau style. The portrait of Alexandra is said to have been Nicholas’ favourite of her. A rare and an amazing part of late 19th century Russian history. What came in the years ahead changed Russian and the world forever. # #tsarnicholasii #tsarinaalexandra #marianikolaevna #romanovs #olgaromanov #romanovfamily #russianempire #grandduchess #anastasia #otma #naotmaa #russianhistory #royalhistory #romanovdynasty #romanovsisters #royals #alexandrafeodorovna #royalcollection #britishroyalfamily #russia #russianroyals #russianroyalty #sarreguemines

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • #vosjod1 #vladimirkomarov #komarov #komarovmir #cosmonautasoviético #cosmonaut #cosmonauta #cosmonaute #cosmonaut #astronauta #astronaut #astronautics #soyuz #soyuz1 #historiarusa #russiahistory #urss #uniónsoviética #launionsovietica #urssmemes #uniónsoviética #carreraespacial🚀 #carreraespacial #guerrafría #guerrafria #soviet #sovietunion #redarmy #russianhistory #coldwarmemes #coldwarclips #coldwar #launionsovietica
