The male and female grebe advance towards each other (sometimes underwater), then draw up face to face. We forget how lucky we are in this country, yes dwindling numbers of wildlife but where we can go is utterly beautiful , tranquil and very accessible. OK - a Cormorant is a common enough bird - and the background (disused raft floats?) is not exactly natural - but I liked being able to show this Cormorant drying and shaking itself after swimming and diving. As well as seeing a swimming grass snake (see last two posts) I saw a Barn Owl at RSPB Ham Wall last week - it was a morning full of good surprises. For me, seeing a Barn Owl is an unusual treat. This was unexpected! I was sitting looking out over the Loxton pools at RSPB Ham Wall earlier this week when I noticed a ripple in the water travelling across the pool - a Grass Snake! Identifiable by the yellow ring below its head, and apparently quite at home in the water.
