Well done to volunteers Fran and Lisa for the first successful relocation of a duck family this year! They managed to capture 14 ducklings and their mum who had been born on a roof terrace in Kidbrooke, leaving them completely unable to access water, and relocate them to a nearby lake. Catching fully flighted adult ducks is always a challenge, so it's a real achievement to be able to rescue both mum and her babies safely - Fran and Lisa managed this by herding the family inside, so that mum couldn't fly away. Ducks keep us very busy during the spring and summer, because female mallards love to nest in locations that are less than ideal. Balconies, terraces, ornamental fountains, the roofs of 100ft tower blocks. When their babies hatch, they often have no way of making it to water and are - quite literally - sitting ducks for predators like gulls and crows. On other horrifying occasions, the ducklings have walked off the roofs of extremely tall buildings trying to follow their mum. If they survive the drop, they often end up randomly wandering in busy streets. Hence the urgent need to relocate them to a more appropriate habitat, before they can come to harm. The mother ducks also tend to return to these same nesting spots year after year, no matter how horribly wrong things go for them! Great crested grebe One of my favourite water birds, and the adults carry their cute humbug-striped chicks on their backs! I started this ceramic grebe by throwing a cylinder and pushing the sides in, then added the head, neck and tail. The chicks are tiny pinch pots with the head and neck added. I used a lightly wedged mix of white and vulcan for the chicks. The parent (both mum and dad care) was decorated with orange and brown high/firing underglazes and black slip. The back is glazed with a white glaze over oil-slick glaze, and I used matt ( not very matt) transparent on the rest of the bird. The chicks are not glazed. Kerak kerbau (𝘈𝘤𝘳𝘪𝘥𝘰𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦𝘴 𝘫𝘢𝘷𝘢𝘯𝘪𝘤𝘶𝘴) atau juga dikenal sebagai jalak kebo, jalak hitam, jalak ungu dan jalak penyu adalah spesies burung yang merupakan termasuk familia jalak. Semula merupakan spesies endemik Jawa dan Bali, namun saat ini telah terintroduksi ke berbagai wilayah lain di Indonesia (Sumatera, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Nusa Tenggara dan Ambon) serta Malaysia, Singapura dan Taiwan. Jalak ini hidup dalam kelompok besar atau kecil. Sebagian besar mencari makan di padang rumput, pemukiman, lahan pertanian dan di kota. Di alam bebas, jalak ini sering mendatangi areal yang menjadi ladang penggembalaan kerbau. la senang bertengger di punggung kerbau, sambil mencari kutu yang menempel di tubuh kerbau tersebut. A whale watching tour (see previous post) was the last adventure of my roadtrip through Newfoundland and parts of Labrador, Canada 🇨🇦. During the tour, we passed some bird colonies as well, where I got a last chance to see black-legged Kittiwakes and the beautiful puffins. The kittiwakes were busy guarding their young ones 🐥 on the tiny ledges, where they had their nest. The puffins were enjoying the sun on the top of rocks or bobbing in the water, before diving for food again. 621 - White-breasted Cormorant, Kommetjie, Apr 2024. Common resident found at a variety of inland and coastal water bodies as well as the ocean. (Witborsduiker) Our largest species of cormorant and unmistakeable with white underparts and large size. The eye is green with black eye ring and yellow orange bare skin under the bill. The juveniles have all white chest and belly. Usually seen loafing on an exposed perch preening and sunning itself. White-breasted Cormorants eat mainly fish which they catch while fishing underwater. A common sight for most birders at coastal beaches and inland lakes and estuaries, this species doesn’t really get anyone excited but they are magnificent birds when you take a closer look… There were a large number of different Cormorant species on the rocky outcrop at Kommetjie one morning.
