The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park is a huge ecosystem - larger than the size of Italy! To manage and protect this vast ecosystem, it takes a collective effort. Since time immemorial, Traditional Owners have interwoven their culture and spirituality with the Land and Sea Country of the Great Barrier Reef. Now, it's critical that we - the Reef Authority - walk side by side with the over 70 First Nations communities to manage, protect, and care for Country. Now in its 20th year, Traditional Use of Marine Resources Agreements (TUMRA) works with communities to manage their Sea Country, their way - with a union of traditional knowledge and modern science. These Agreements are community-based plans for management of traditional resources which are accredited in legislation and have proved a successful mechanism for joint management of the Reef. They describe how Great Barrier Reef Traditional Owner groups work in partnership with the Australian and Queensland governments to manage traditional use activities on their Sea Country. Villainised by channels such as Disney, they have also been associated with death by many African tribes. When in truth, they are good hunters, but they also play a critical role in cleaning up the land and stopping the spread of diseases. The most nutrient-rich part of the giant bamboo is the deadliest, containing cyanide. Their digestive system is adapted to absorb toxins, providing them with food sources unavailable to other animals. Only 250 mature individuals remain wild and continue to decline. Threatened by habitat loss due to slash-and-burn agriculture. They are Critically Endangered. One year ago, the GAIA team travelled to Uganda and equipped 18 vultures with e-obs GPS tags - greatly helped on site by @andrebotha1967 and @ugandacf and with support from @zooberlin. This allowed us to expand our innovative early-warning system for environmental changes and critical ecological incidents to an entirely new region. Central Africa is in many ways different to Namibia, where we developed the system; so we are looking forward to important research that the - so far - 7 million vulture positions and the corresponding ACC bursts allow for. He everyone. I'm very excited to share with you all one of my new projects I'm working on in between my commissions. A few years ago I was contacted by Margot Raggett Photography to be a part of a wonderful wildlife fundraising program called Remembering Bears which is a part of Remembering Wildlife campaign. I donated a drawing to this cause and the buyer was from USA I drew his dog Boomer who had passed away. Margot has given me permission to use one her amazing photographs of a leopard. Coming from Zimbabwe, African animals have a special place in my heart so this is certainly something special for me. I will be donating some proceeds to her wildlife conservation efforts. The mighty leopard 🐆 Amazing how well camouflaged these animals are - we looked for ages but eventually found this beauty chilling in a tree. The photos make it seem far more serene that it really was. I was in a safari vehicle and around me were about 85 other jeeps all vying for a spot to see the leopard.
