Day 28 of Drinks and Things: Yesterday I went on my first hike as the Cancer moon squared Mars. Squares in astrology are often regarded as one of the more challenging aspects that can occur between two planets in a natal chart or by transit. These occur when planets are approximately 90 degrees apart, creating a tension that demands action and resolution. Despite their reputation for causing friction, squares have a dynamic quality that can lead to growth and important changes. I started the day imagining a serene hike in nature with friends as we observed beautiful landscapes and lush trees. 45 minutes into our hike I said, “Oh this isn’t so bad, it’s basically just advanced walking”. Just 15 minutes later I would be reminded that I’m friends with crazy people whose idea of adventure includes “almost dying”. They also introduced me to a new term: level 2 fun. Never one to turn down a challenge, I compartmentalized my expectation for serenity with the sign warning us that the next two hours would be very difficult. Our advanced walking adventure quickly turned into a rock climbing excursion. I gave a silent prayer of gratitude to “Yoga With Adriene”, on YouTube while discovering core muscles I didn’t even know I had. I breathed a sigh of relief as we came to the end of “the rock scramble”. It lasted about 5 minutes before I realized that the end of the hike involved 71 flights of stairs. I came to the end of our nature experience with an odd sense of pride and nausea. Luckily my friends believe in balancing torture with comfort and we ended the day over a delicious meal in a Japanese food court with a solid sake collection. The end of something unique, challenging, and transformative, so I present you with the “Rock Scramble Cocktail”. It contains: -2 oz Gin, -1 oz Sake, -1/2 oz Elderflower Liqueur -1/2 oz Fresh Lime Juice -3-4 Fresh Basil Leaves We’re talking about going again next weekend. Please keep me in your prayers. Today's saké for National Saké Week is Kubota Senju Ginjo from the Asahi Brewery. Being a ginjo means that the rice kernels used are milled to around 60% of their original size and it had some of the brewers alcohol added in the making. This one, quite typically, has a fairly fruity flavour. I've used it in three gin cocktails here. The first, in the black metal stemmed glass that I recently bought from @thatthrift24 , is what I'm calling a Pear, Cacao and Saké Cocktail. It is made with the fabulous Cacao Éthique Gin, itself made from saké lees, with a little of Giffards White Creme de Cacao and a homemade pear and vanilla syrup. It's garnished with a dehydrated pear slice coated in the syrup. The second, in my pretty floral Luminarc glass, is an Earl Grey Saketini, made using Sweet Potato Earl Grey Gin, and a little Italicus, garnished with a lemon twist. The third, in my vintage Rosenthal etched glass, is an Orange Oolong Hi, made with Micil Spiced Orange Gin, concentrated Oolong Tea and Cointreau. It should be topped up with tonic water, but I liked it as it was, so didn't bother. It's garnished with orange peel and my goldfish stirring rod. We also had some neat, served up in our black pottery saké jug and cups, bought when we were in Kyoto. Happy National Saké Week! I'm a big fan of saké - or nihonshu. We sampled lots (and lots) while we were in Japan for two months in 2015, and definitely got a real taste for it. It is an incredibly varied drink, something which I think many people don't realise. Just like wine made from grapes, there are different styles depending on the rice used, how much the kernels have been milled, whether or not alcohol is added to the brewing, and factors like whether it is filtered or pasteurised. There are regional and seasonal variations too. We enjoy most good saké, but some of our favourites include the cloudy Nigorizake, which has less of the rice lees filtered out giving it a milky feel, and the (sadly rather pricey) junmai daiginjoshu, which use the most milled kernels and has no alcohol added and makes a beautifully clean but complex flavour. Unfortunately, whilst I can happily say that I have a reasonable understanding of the drink, I have very little knowledge of the various producers or how to recognise which to buy - and sadly saké is quite expensive here because it needs to be fresh, so it could be a lot to spend to try them out, especially when a lack of ability to read kanji means you've little idea what the label says! In readiness for National Saké Week, my husband picked up these bottles from a local Japanese store @tazakicashandcarry . From left to right we have Kubota Senju Ginjo, Shochkubai Nigori Sake, Dassai 45 Junmai Daiginjo, Tsukasabotan Yama Yuzu Shibon Yuzu Saké Liqueur, and then a Kuru Kirishima Black Sweet Potato Shochu.
