Just a few mini OEM+ mods before I do a ton of wiring changes. I plan on adding a Rear Red Fog Light, so a new switch is in order. In this case a Miles Japan push button switch with indicator light was used. I cut down the perimeter of the bezel a bit and rounded all the corners to match the late 90’s style aesthetic. Ironically, there is an OEM location for the Rear Fog Light switch, located under the dash to the left of the steering wheel, but I feel it’s more important than the Antenna Switch, so I swapped their locations. I also wanted an OEM Nissan LED Security Alarm Indicator. For me, the perfect spot is the blank switch location next to the coin holder pockets, in the center console. It’s centrally located in the car and it will be seen from any window. Unbelievably, holding on to this BOSS Steering Wheel adapter since 2004 has paid off! Too bad I wasn’t smart enough to keep my BNIB Nismo 25th Anniversary 360 Steering wheel, but oh well. 😩 @mdnyt_r graciously gifted me this MOMO Typ D35 from the 90’s. It’s quite similar in shape to the Nismo wheel I once had! I did do a quick resto on the leather and dyed the stitching red, plus I upgraded the horn button by swapping out the center with a simpler, understated design. When upgrading to a different steering wheel, go out of your way to get a Japanese adapter. It will come with an SRS Airbag bypass cable (so the Airbag light doesn’t come on) and single prong wire tap for the horn button. My obsession with OEM+ made this the hardest decision, the rear wing. The R32 GT-R wing “fits”, but it’s been done before and it’s too angular for the look I want. R33 GT-R sedan version? No. Out of the question. Kouki S14 wing? Great look, but the base is too wide for mounting. 180SX Type-X Rear wing?Again, a pretty good look and the mounting points would have worked, but the tip were a bit far from the body. Then I saw an image of R35 GT-R wing. I did not, would not even consider this as an option at all. However, I remembered my buddy Tsuyoshi owner of @samurai_motors once had an R35 that did not have its OEM wing. Could he still have it just to give it a test try? I gave him a call and he said it was long gone. The next day he calls me back and says “Hey do you still want R35 wing? I found it!” Not only did he find it but when I got to his shop, he gifted it to me! But would it look good? So we took a chance. Not only was it luck acquiring this wing, it fit in the stock holes of the R33 trunk lid!!! (after cutting 1 of the 3 posts coming out of the wing) If it didn’t look good at least we didn’t have to drill any extra holes and we could still mount the stock wing. We decided to paint it with the rest of the parts and I ordered the missing led brake light. Assembly of the wing required several new nuts and bolts and @bce_designs cut out several white vinyl circles; this is how they are assembled from the factory with several color matched vinyl circles covering the holes. How does it look? I couldn’t be happier! I couldn’t believe the proportions fit so well! Rear Wings are an objective piece but I think it this car need it too offset the balance of the aggressive front. They say it takes a village to raise a child. Well, I couldn’t have created this grill without the help from friends in a few industrial spots. First, @theplasticrepairshop with their plastic repair skills. I removed the center vane from a stock sedan grill and they filled in all the cuts I had created. Next, @6651customs for the powder coat on the steel mesh. It was cut from an off the shelf sheet of heavy gauge steel. I made a draft piece using a piece of cardboard and then transferred the shape over. Last but certainly not least, my painter Al Nakata to finish the frame in Nissan QM1 Cloud White. I got the joy of design and assembly. 😅😅😅 In a previous post I purchased a rare Nissan Optional Parts Catalog grill for the Kouki R33. I also had it repaired, painted and customized. It’s a great piece, but it wasn’t what I really wanted. A design element I wanted was missing, depth. The NOPC grill is rather flush. The only other grill I prefer is the Hasemi Sports grill I had on my previous ‘96 coupé. Sadly it is out of production as well, although an BNIB shows up every now and then. Anyway, once I got all the pieces together there was a bit of masking and painting still needed to do and mounting of the “S” badge, originally meant for the bonnet. The fact that the “S” is partially hidden is intentional. While in Japan for TAS 2023, I saw a brown R34 GT-T that car inspired me with the idea. I like it, it’s a bit elusive. The replica 400R Fender flares are available in 2 types, GT-R and non-GT-R fitment, as usual none was available for the R33 sedan. As my car is a GTS25t, we went with the non-GT-R version and the testing fitting began. The front flares fit with no major issues however, if I wanted to open my rear doors the rears would need to modified extensively. Especially since we wanted a clean an OEM appearance. Luckily, it was only a straight light that needed to be cut but there was still a lot of design elements that needed to be considered. These pieces were going to made and mounted to OEM standards, and fit and finish were equally high on our decision. The angle of the cut, the method of filling in the pieces and how they were to be mounted had to be cared fully considered or the work involved would have been much more. But NakataSan is The Man. The new “G-Four” side skirts by GP Sports, were also modified. OEM R33 sedan skirts are close to impossible to find and when a set was found they selling would only list them for “pick up only” no shipping, and they were always located in a very rural part of Japan. This set I purchased was the least “BN Sports drift missile” looking but still needed to be modified for a more OEM appearance. As a side note, there are OEM, FRP replicas in Australia, but shipping was more than the item itself! Another piece of the puzzle acquired and NakataSan went to work on modification. The first and hardest part to creating my “380M” was the rear bumper. There is no Nissan or Nismo Rear bumper made for the sedan. There are rear lower pods/spats that are available, but they did not have the impact I wanted. So a replica rear bumper was sourced and my body shop master Al went to work. When we discovered it simply would not fit, we decided on cutting off the top half and create our own wraparound “lower lip” cut at the existing body line for an OEM look. Additionally, height and length adjustments were incorporated as needed, especially with the new GP Sports Sides skirts, which I’ll cover in the next post. I was going to call this concept the “4 D00R” and create a graphic side stripe similar to the the Nismo “400R” but with an added “D”. However, as this build has progressed, it seems to have pulled away from the 400R look and more importantly it’s construction material. My research coincidentally revealed that many 400R body parts are also sold as Nismo “S-tune” parts but, they are constructed of fiberglass or ABS resin. Specifically, the Rear bumper, Side skirts, Front bumper, and the “Type I” and “Type II” Front lip. On the 400R, the Fender flares and Bonnet are exclusive and many of the aforementioned parts would be made of carbon fiber rather than FPR. That being said I’ve abandoned the “4 D00R” idea. As the build has stayed more true to its “Type-M” status (Front end), with a modified replica “S-tune” rear bumper (there is no sedan sized “S-tune” rear bumper from Nismo) and modified replica “400R” Fender flares (again there are no sedan flares from Nismo); plus I will only going for sub-400hp, I may start calling this a “380M” or “380R” concept. I realize I haven’t posted any updates on the R33 in awhile! So here’s an upgrade that is phenomenal for any non GT-R owners like myself! OEM GT-R seats are just the best! I didn’t this OEM+ upgrade on my first R33 and the difference is night and day. Much much more supportive than stock and a much lower seating position really changes how you feel the road as well as how you view the road. It’s a much more sports oriented position. I will be have the all seats reupholstered, front and rear, by my friends at @iansauto in the near future. When they don’t produce the look you want, customize: Part 1. For me I want it to look as OEM as possible. For this example, I’ve taken a factory R33 4-door grill and had the center section removed and filled. Thanks to Sean at @theplasticrepairshop! Top work as always! I also picked up an OEM R33 Skyline bonnet emblem, and some 18 gauge expandable sheet metal. Make a stencil with some cardboard and masking tape and violá! Lucky finds for my R33: Period correct dual Kenwood decks. I frequent my local junkyard exactly for this reason. One day I found a PU11, 2nd Gen, Nissan Maxima that looked like it had just arrived. Front end collision and nothing picked from it yet. I hop in mainly to appreciate it for what it is and lo and behold these 2 Kenwood decks just sitting there. The car was in great shape, which led me to believe this car was loved and the owner liked his audio as well. The main unit was a KRC-408 Cassette Deck with CD Player control capability. Below it was a KDC-D300 CD Player with full front Spectrum Analyzer (SO FRESH!) As a junkyard piece it’s always a risk, but when I pulled it out the wiring harness was intact and the units looked to be installed properly with care, even the bezels were there. Cost to me $25, definitely worth the gamble. When I got here home I powered her up and everything worked! All lights, both players, both faces pop off, all illumination even. The BBS LM has always been on my list as a set of “dream wheels” to own, but I never had the right car at the right time. Luckily Chris over at @db8motorsports not only sourced me a proper and straight set, but they are also slightly modified with a more aggressive offset and gold hardware. Plus they were carefully packaged and clean! He is very easy to do business with and knows a thing or 2 about the import scene! Finding the perfect size vents was hard; securing them called for a couple of unconventional ideas. N1 ducts and rear spats!?! No, these are not real BNCR33 N1 Ducts and no, these are not actual rear spats. A bit of “form follows function” from 2 points of view. I came up on these eBay specials from Malaysia! Perfect overall size with only minimal modification to work. The function? To provide more air the un-exposed areas of the new FMIC. R33 Sedan rear spats are about an inch longer that the coupé versions and are quite hard to source. When my parts were painted I threw in one of my damaged mud flaps. One pic my painter sent me showed the whole flap painted and I thought it would good look. If anything, it would act as a “temporary” spat until I can source the real deal. My painter actual brought it back to the original look with the black border. When I noticed the difference between the left and right mudflap I decided to repaint them both to show much more white than the original look and so they would match. The function? Hopefully it will be a good look (and line up with side skirts I have coming from Japan) if not I can always bring it back to the original look. Fingers crossed. Well since I removed the amber lenses from both the sedan and coupé version from bumper light units, I might as well do the rest of the car! A quick peek through the signal/reverse light lens on the taillight housing suggested the internal amber lens was held on by a single screw! Time to remove, bake and crack these suckers open! With both taillights done the last bit of amber lenses on the car were the OEM side markers. So on with some clear Nismo units! If you’ve been following along with my R33 Sedan build you know I’ve been trying to decide wether or not to go with the original or the coupé version; especially after I was able to remove the amber lens in the sedan units. Well the decision just got a bit harder. I took a chance yesterday and after considering my options (sorry @offdamrkt I found these and couldn’t at least try, you are still my first choice if I want clear blinker lenses) I pulled off the amber lenses but also found a set of super slim 4” fog lights left in the garage of this house I recently moved into. To my utter surprise very little modification was required to make these fit perfectly. I didn’t even need to cut outer bezel! ECR33 Sedan Update: HPI Evolve S-Spec FMIC. Cutting the OEM bumper was quite a chore. Unlike GT-R’s, GTS25t’s require extensive cutting of the engine bay, bumper support and the bumper itself in order to fit. For a clean install, several attempts of finessing the bumper openings are required. For my car I chose the HPI Evolve S-Spec FMIC with optional black couplings and spring clamps. Great quality I expect from a “Made in Japan” product plus I liked the option of choosing coupling color and clamp type. I purchased this online through RHD Japan @rhdjapan. Project 33 Update: Suspension. The old ways are still the best! Nothing beats, an old Louisville Slugger, a heat gun, a jack and PATIENCE. Especially if you want a chip free experience (paint condition varies). Now that the wheels and tires are on (more on that in a separate post) I picked of a set of Tein Flex Z Coilovers, they are supposedly the last model manufactured in Yokohama, although the sticker on the box says otherwise. 😂 Either way they are here now and they are going on! Special thanks to Tyla from @evasivemotorsports for squaring away my order. Remember kids, Skyline GT-R coil-overs will not fit GTS cars, the mounting points are a different style. It was an easy install and dampeners adjusted and dialed in. Project 33: Bumper Light Assembly Decisions, decisions, decisions. My best friend once told me as long as you have decisions in life you’re doing alright. In this case I get to decide between the OEM coupe design, shown on the right, or a modified sedan version, shown on the left. And the next pictures you can see the difference between them when they are both stock. I’m not a fan of orange signal lights, but I do like the design of the coupé light assembly. But as you can see I modified the sedan light assembly by removing the lenses on screen orange inner lens and adding a Polar B1 Hybrid bulbs (soon to be accompanied by PIAA H3 4000K bulbs for the fog light side). Combined with the black housing coupé headlight units and custom grill, I won’t really know what will look best until it’s on the car. I do know that whatever route I go I will have matching side makers to go with it. Project 33: Grill The Nissan Optional Parts Catalog grill is, in my opinion the best looking OEM grill available for the Kouki GTS25t. The metal mesh grill, gunmetal bezel, and red “S”; is a nice added touch and completes the look I’m going for. In my case I luckily found one, as these are quite rare and a bit pricey. If your 33 came with one, Zenki or Kouki style, keep it, they will only go up in value. This grill is comprised of several components! 19 total! Once disassembled it’s comprised of 3 plastic support pieces, 6 metal pieces for the metal insert (I found out about this after it was removed and acid dipped to remove all the plastic coating), the grill bezel itself, the red “S” emblem and 8 screws! I wanted to restore mine and customize it for the look I wanted. In this case, the bezel is color matched to the factory QM1 Cloud White color. The center was welded together as one piece and powder coated gloss black by @6651customs. The bezel it self was painted along with other components by Al Nakata, and I sanded and repainted the red “S” as well as masked the grill to paint the matte black interior space. The result is a personalized version of my favorite grill. This was the final piece of the puzzle I needed to send the car out to paint! However, I’m torn between waiting to find a set of OEM side skirts to paint as well before I do it. R33 Sedan mini update: SOPC grill mesh insert. The mesh insert on the SOPC grill was in a sorry state. Tired, plastic coating flaking off and partially repainted silver, it really needed some work. Luckily the guys at @6651customs were able to help. They dipped it in acid for a day to remove the factory plastic coating, only to find it was the only thing holding the six components together! So they decided to weld the pieces together before applying the black powder coat. I opted for a gloss finish to give it a bit of a refreshed look, recommend by @mdnyt_r when he redid the grill on his BNCR33 GT-R. Thanks for the tip! Next, the bezel for the grill will be painted when all the other front end pieces come in. R33 Sedan mini update! The R33 Skyline Optional Parts Catalog (SOPC) grill came to me in a pretty sorry state, but what mattered was no broken tabs, no bends, and complete. The front “S” badge was in a sorry state. Chipped, gouged, uneven and apparently hand painted at one point, this was unsatisfactory. I carefully cut the double stick tape and pried the badge of the grill base. My plan was to replace it with a chrome version I picked up online, but to my dismay it was much much larger. So it was time to restore. Prep work is everything, even on small items. Hand sanding, primer, paint and coats of clear; and viola! A near perfect “S” badge to “replace” the old tired one. Bits and bobbles of JDM goodness. 🇯🇵😊 Mostly period correct except for the Carmate frameless rear view mirror and the factory Nissan First Aid Kit. 😅 These are little items I’ve put in all the Japanese cars I’ve built through the years. Razo Pedals, Carmate Cupholders, Air Spencer Air Freshener and even a couple of Nismo tidbits. For good measure I found an OEM Cigarette Lighter as well! Another little detail ticked off the list: OEM Nissan Center Caps. I popped off the Infiniti badges, rattle canned a shot of matching silver paint to freshen them up and added the Nissan badges. The arrival of this rare piece from the R33 Skyline Optional Parts Catalog (SOPC) from Japan is the first step to getting “Project 4DOOR” started. As you can see it’s quite rough in condition, but luckily can be easily disassembled in multiple pieces. I also did a crude mock up with some white vinyl and a can of black paint to get an idea of how I want it to look. I’ll be dropping off the metal mesh component to @6651customs to get powder coated and ordering some QM1 paint for the bezel. The center badge may be restored or replaced as well. I’m still weighing my options. When I picked up my 33, she came with black and blue Weds SA54-R wheels. JDM? Yes. My style? No. They had to go, but I want to drive my car. I’m a massive fan of OEM+ style and while looking for an OEM cigarette lighter, @toprank_ivi_sean_morris, I came across some beat up 03-04 Infiniti G35 Sedan wheels. Picked them up for cheap. Then I remembered they were the same wheels on the JDM ‘03-04 Nissan Skyline! Not only that but they are made by Rays Engineering!!! (See pic 3 from the Skyline brochure). I dropped them off @6651customs and they went to work, FAST! They repaired all the nicks and gouges, (one big enough to put my pinky in) and powder coated them silver. I got them back in LESS THAN A DAY!!! I definitely need some spacers to get them to sit where I want, but at least I can drive her around now with an OEM+ look until I get the wheels I want.
