Meet Sav-A-Life Volunteer, Gail Peacock Barker Hello - My name is Gail Peacock Barker. I have two children and two beautiful grandchildren. I have been familiar with Sav-A-Life for a long time. My mother volunteered there some years ago when I was younger. The present director, Sharon Moore, and I became friends through our children. After my retirement from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Alabama, I started volunteering at Sav-A-Life when needed. Saving a child’s life is a passion of mine. We would like to introduce you to our volunteer, Ms. Sharon Spears: Sharon says: "I’ve always believed that if a baby was conceived it should have a chance at life. Whether the mother decided to keep the child or give it up for adoption, it should be given a chance to thrive. In 2020, I believe it was, I went to a Sav-A-Life fundraiser with a couple of friends. I enjoyed the program and it pulled at my heartstrings. I felt a desire to volunteer. I filled out the card at the fundraiser along with my donation, and turned them in. About a week later Sharon called me in for an interview. I was so impressed at EVERYTHING they do!! Sharon concluded the interview and asked when I could start to volunteer. It has been such a blessing for me to get to know Sharon, Beth and Miranda, along with all the volunteers that make this machine work so well. Hey y’all! I’m Miranda. I’ve been married 24 years this year. I am a mother to two adult boys. We homestead and I also co-lead a group that teaches classes on homesteading, self-sufficiency, etc. I met Sharon in 2005 at a women’s group meeting at my church. We held a baby shower for Sav-A-Life. After hearing about the ministry, I knew I had to be involved. I immediately started volunteering. Six months later I was hired on staff. My name is Beth and I have worked at Sav-A-Life since 2008. I taught at a private school prior to coming to SAL and it was a friend that told me about them hiring. Now all these years later I can’t imagine being anywhere else. I have been married for going on 26 years to my wonderful husband, Mike, who works at Yates Dam. We have two beautiful, adult daughters Sarah Beth & Bryana. SB, our oldest, owns her own business locally and Bree, our youngest works and is in her sophomore year at AUM. Working at SAL has been the best thing to ever happen to me! Not only do I get to work with 2 amazing women, but they are also my dearest friends. Sharon Moore-Executive Director I was invited to a church service in 1992 and heard a testimony about adoption by a couple who had adopted through Sav-A-Life and felt the calling to volunteer. I became a Crisis Pregnancy Center Counselor in November 1993, after volunteering for several months. In June of 1994, the Executive Director resigned, and I placed an application for the position. I was the ONLY person to apply, and I got the job. I had no idea what I was doing, but God had a plan. I had no computer experience or experience at running a business. I learned quickly as I was the only paid staff member for many years. Twenty-nine years later, I cannot imagine doing anything else with my life. I can honestly say that I love my job. It has been hard at times. There have been times I have wanted to quit, and God would not let me. We have come a long way since our first two room office on Cherokee Street with a total of six clients in six months. We now have fifty to sixty clients monthly. I could not have done it without our donors, individuals, churches, civic clubs, and businesses. And my incredible staff! I have been blessed beyond measure by using my God-given talents for the Lord daily. There are many churches that have not responded to my request. You can choose when you’d like to participate.
