A comment I often get from potential clients regarding their investments is: "I don't want to put all my eggs in one basket, so I have some money saved with Liberty, some with Coronation and the rest with my bank." . What they are saying is I want to be diversified, and that's wise. Sadly that strategy isn't actually what diversification means. . They are described putting money with various administators/platforms. What you end up with could potentially be the same underlying investment, I.e. not diversified at all, but simply different levels of service and fees. Choosing an administrator/platform should be based on best service at lowest fees, and then build your diversified strategy there. . Step 1 is to make sure if one element of the economy fails(e.g. property), other elements hold up(e.g. bonds) - that's not putting all your eggs in one basket. . The real enhancement created by diversification however is step 2. . Blending funds in your portfolio which react differently in different market conditions so that when markets go down, your investment goes down less........When markets pick up, your investment picks up more. And that's the magic! . I love my car! ๐ If that's you then I'm happy for you, let's be honest, most of us spend good chunks of our lives in our car. But can we ever get to the point where we can buy a car cash and never spend huge amounts of our hard earned income making vehicle financiers wealthy?โณ Yes! It's the 20:4:10:2 rule: 1. Start by putting down at least 20% deposit. 2. Finance your car for a maximum of four years. 3. Don't spend more that 10-15% of your pre-tax income on your car - that includes insurance and maintenance. 4. Never buy a brand new car, get one that's 1 or 2 years old, and let the previous owner suffer the majority of its depreciation. Try driving the car a few years longer than the 4 years of finance, and keep putting the amounts you were paying for the car into savings. Within a short time your deposit will get bigger and bigger, until it's a full value. Yes it may mean downgrading initially, but you will be in a position later where you won't be stressing about car payments stretching your budget. You'll also most likely be driving a nicer car in time than if you stick in the debt cycle, because those hundreds of thousands that would be going to the financing companies are now going into your sweet ride! Why does their mess effect our investments down here? That's a logical question many of our clients ask. The answer is fairly simple.๐ Companies,especially those listed on our stock exchange are often listed on other exchanges, or have branches in other countries. That means much of their funding and revenue is from outside SA, including the UK. ๐ When massive events like Brexit effect trade relations and the Pound, our stock exchange is effected.โก So what do we do to protect our clients? Do you use the CPUF formula? It's the Cost Per Unit if Fun! Beware, this is NOT a science, but it's a classic way to decide what to do for fun!๐คฉ I saw it on a mail from @behaviorgap and loved it. You can use it when deciding whether a certain activity is worth it, or deciding between two different activities.๐ค In the numerator put the cost, and in the denominator, the amount of fun you'll have, say out of 10. For example, Ed Sheeran tickets that cost R2400 for my wife and I will give 8/10 of fun. Going away over the same weekend for R2500 is a 10/10. That means that going to Ed Sheeran costs R300/unit of fun. "I'd like to reduce what I spend on my life cover," is a common comment when we meet a new client. ๐ฒ The 1st thing I check is how their cover is structured. The biggest loss to our family if we pass away is our income. That's a monthly amount which over our working life adds up to many millions. ๐ฑ To buy enough life cover for all that lost income as a lump sum payout is often just too expensive and so people are typically underinsured. ๐ Lately however, insurers can provide monthly payouts to beneficiaries. Since the insurer sits with the money which earns interest, they can offer much more cover for the same premium. ๐ค The other benefit is the beneficiary cant blow the money and end up unable to cover expenses within a few years, which sadly, usually is the case. "I should have left my money in the bank!" You may be thinking that with the last 5 years of poor investment performance in any aggressive strategy in SA. The graph explains(rather roughly) that in SA, without exception, keeping your money invested in an aggressive portfolio, will end up with higher returns than leaving it in the bank. Why? Banks lend money to companies to help them grow. Interest charged on those loans are what is used to give you interest in your bank/cash savings, AFTER the bank makes it's profit. Companies use that money to grow the value of their business AFTER repaying the loans to the bank with interest. It means that companies have to grow the money far more than the interest you are getting on your cash savings to remain viable. In periods of poor economics like we've had in the last 5 years in SA, companies will struggle to do that and some will go out of business.
