Hello there, I just wanted to share with you a couple of photos of the Clivia’s growing in my garden at the moment. It’s the sheer brilliance of the colours between the two types that are showing off at the moment. Both being the Clivia miniata ‘Kaffir Lily/ Belgium Orange’, but each with very different colour and leaf shape. The first being a lighter orange, lighter green leaf colour with a more pointed tip where by the last one is far stronger in its colour, darker green leaves and more rounded at the tip with the added bonus of dark red seed pods. The name ‘miniata’ is in reference to the flame-coloured flower. Clivia miniata can be found under tree cover, often growing on well drained land growing to 500mm and suckering freely forming large clumps. A shade lover happy to be placed in and around taller plant stock and in flower when other clivia's are not, making it a valuable addition to the garden. They are long lived and flower reliably every year. #clivia #cliviaminiata #kaffirlily #belgiumorange #orangeflowerssydney #scenicbluedesign

Finding ourselves at one of our projects today down on the South Coast discussing the Gabion cages, their layout and the stone facing with Scott and Jason. The drawing of the gabions in 3D by Scott made the decisions so much easier for all to absorb – thanks Scott #ScenicBlueDesign #landscapeconstruction #chrisslaughter

Plant of the week 🌱 Catalpa bignonioides ‘Nana’ – Grafted standard Dwarf Indian bean tree What a tree. I love the way man plays with plant stock and this is one that really ticks so many boxes for both aesthetic reasons and design effectiveness. This tree carries the most beautiful long stalked paddle shaped leaves that move majestically in the breeze. Being a grafted standard, you can order the tree with a trunk between heights of 1.5m to 1.8m. With this type of plant, it works so well at providing under canopy shade or strategically think about planting it to soften out say a neighbouring window so bringing beauty in the foreground of the window. Now if you are after a really big tree, you can buy the Catalpa bignonioides ‘ Indian Bean Tree’ that has not been grafted and will reward you so much in a large garden setting allowing for areas under for shaded picnics and a good of fashion climbing tree. For further inspiration and of course if you would like us to help you create your own unique garden setting do please contact us at www.scenicbluedesign.com.auand fill out the enquiry form. Alternatively, you can call me directly on 0405 663222. Front doors have lights next to them making it easy to get to and help visitors when they arrive. Well why is our Trompe L’oeil door any different. We sourced a set of lights to affix either side of the door and of a simple old-style look. One thing the team where not so keen on was the finish – matt black – of the bought lights. So, we went to task changing the look and went to the local paint suppliers. There are some amazing paints out there that can give you some really cool effects. For these lights we decided to work with a paint known as Verdigris. Once you have primed the lights in this case, we applied the Verdigris Base and let that dry. Once dry, you applied a liquid solution that reacts with the particles within the paint and hey presto the green Verdigris effect comes out like magic. As the solution goes to work the green colours seem to move about and you end up with that old tarnished effect. Just what we wanted for the old hardwood door in the courtyard. Have a go, it’s great to make your own changes to what is a product that anybody can have. #oldstylelights #outdoorlights #oldtarnishedsilver #oldeffects #landscapeideas #gardenideas #courtyardideas #courtyarddecorations #outdooraccessories #gardendecorations #scenicbluedesign #verdigris #heritagelights #art

Whenever you find a spot in the garden that is typically that sort of spot that gets neglected simply because of its proximity in the garden and its awkwardness. Turn your thoughts on its head and what is seeming to be a negative can turn into a positive. Here, we had two difficult areas that were generated because the stairs when designed / built with little regard to what impact the stairs would have to the surrounding area. Sure, the stairs are a necessity to get up to the upper garden but with a little forethought their negative impact could have been negated to the areas we had to tackle. These two areas being under the stairs and a nook between the stairs and the courtyards retaining structures. With this we literally placed on paper what it was the courtyard did not give and what it should give. After absorbing the elements and literally sitting in the courtyard to feel its ambiance we found it didn’t offer the natural ability to stop, sit and enjoy. So, with this we felt it would be good to merge the negatives with the desired wants for the courtyard. #beforeandafter #storage #lostspacecourtyard #courtyardgarden #gardeideas #landscapedesign #bbq #wallender #recyclewood #ironwood #richearth #scenicbluedesign

The team at Scenic Blue Design had another ‘Light Bulb’ moment on one of our recent projects. Let’s use the application of Trompe L’oeil by using an art technique to create an optical illusion or ‘Trick of the eye’. We were greeted with a substantial curved structural retaining wall supporting in part bush rock cladding. The rock had to go and once removed, we found this amazing imported hardwood door affixing it to the wall, re-rendered/painted the wall, and hey presto a true Trompe L’oeil. It has already been christened as Narnia’s door by the grandchildren of the home. Others have asked what lies in the room beyond. As is our design make up at Scenic Blue Design, we strive to bring uniqueness to our gardens and couldn’t be happier with this garden. We have to thank our clients for the trust they gave us and remember the raised eyebrow look when we mentioned our vision.
