Oh dear. I picked up this #schlumbergeratruncata in a home decoration store today. It was swimming. The pot full to the brim! I’d seen it (in the same state) a couple of weeks ago, and judging by the red-and-gold pot it came in, it’s been swimming since Christmas. I’m trying to save the poor babe. The roots look ok, but the stem shows damage from overwatering. We’ll see. First step: dry overnight. Unfortunately I can’t get the roots cleaned than that. The epic Christmas cactus (Schlumbergera truncata) I inherited last fall is in full bloom! (It is legit 3 feet wide.) I couldn’t believe how beautiful the variegation is on this particular blossom. The plant seems to like its place in front of the south-facing window, which gets some direct sun but mostly blocked by a huge western cedar. The plant has a few different types of colors on it: Fuschia, red, pale pink too. Keeps things interesting! Back at the end of last year I told my spouse that I wanted a yellow flowering Christmas/thanksgiving cactus. I hadn’t been able to find any but did scoop up a red flowered one. He came home one night with this large but bloomed-out plant that was dressed in a gold foil pot cover. He said he figured that since it was wrapped in gold it would probably bloom yellow. After 6 weeks in a propagation box, my baby schlumbergera and tradescantia were ready to be planted. I must say they’d done really well in the perlite! The avocado was ready for some real soil, too. The choice for my Silk Shading project was the Schlumbergera, a native plant from Brazil. I wanted to depict something special from home, my Mum had a plant when I was growing up, and it was always a joy to see it flowering every year. I was dreading to start this project, since Silk Shading was not very easy for me when I tried on the flowers of my Jacobean Crewelwork piece. But it was a lovely and enjoyable project to work on, from choosing the subject, drawing and painting the design, picking the colour palette, to embroidering every petal from this six centimetres flower. Choosing the silk colour was quick and easy. I had some colours in mind and ordered a few samples, but as soon as I looked at the yellow silk against the flower, I've decided that it was the perfect sunshine background I needed for my happy tropical flower. Stitching wasn't always a smooth process, I did a lot of practicing and sampling before I put the needle down on my actual piece. This helped me a lot to understand how to approach each petal, the flow and rhythm of my stiches and the best colour threads to perfectly match my design. Mounting was getting easier, since this was my third project and I was more experienced, so I thought. But in reality I've really struggled as it was such a small piece and quite fiddly. This project had it challenges, but I loved working on it and learned so much. Marras-joulukuun vaihteessa ja nyt keväällä maalis-huhtikuun vaihteessa. Olen istuttanut kasvin useampi vuosi sitten vasittuun kaktus multaan. 𝗦𝗰𝗵𝗹𝘂𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗿𝗮 𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗮 We found these 4 little plants at our favorite local nursery this weekend. I bought the pot from there earlier this year to pot something else in there which we did not do. This is the perfect pot. My husband is way more gentle than me with repotting MANY bonsai trees over the years, so he did the repotting and I mainly was encouraging support. It turned out so beautiful. We still had cactus succulent soil from @superfly_bonsai who have closed their stores down. It was our favorite bonsai store online to get our soil from.
