Heathway lathes are tough but they don’t last forever without proper servicing. This lathe had been greased, not oiled. Headstock Bearing failed due to lack of oil. Schlenk Lines! These provide a convenient means of manipulating air sensative materials on the ‘bench top’. A Schlenk line consists of: - A dual manifold - a vacuum and a gas side. - A Cold Trap Assembly - to condense solvent vapours and protect the pump. - A Bubbler - to allow the flow rate to be visably monitored. Swipe to see… 2. Custom-built Schlenk lines allow the owner to create a perfect set up for their work, budget allowing for indulgence. This example is a basic, four port, greased manifold and trap assembly- relatively cheap and cheerful. 3. This design has High Vacuum (vacuum backed stopcocks) but is still a very basic design. 4. Still a greased set up. This example used ball joint fittings on the vacuum line. 5. This is a greaseless set up. A 5 port dual manifold with a vacuum port on the vac line and stopcocks each end on the gas line. Notice the 5th port has a different connection, bespoke manifolds allow for personalisation. 6-9. Cold Trap designs vary too! 10-11. Some more on the scientific aspect of my work: Consistency of equipment along with accuracy of experimental method are the key to being able to successfully reproduce experiments and results. Attention to tolerances - be it 2 or 22, each should look the same. Pitch, spacing and number of coils - this may mean you end up winding an extra 1 or 2 coils, especially if you miscount the first time and end up short 🤭… Professional, but human. A test of planning and construction, the multi pot water jacketed Echem cell. Each cell has its own 1/10mm luggin capillary precisely measured before made up into the cell. My biggest glass sculpture to date, and possibly my favourite commission… The chefs were commissioned by the Combined Forces Culinary Team. A hollow blown lifelike sculpture standing 50cm tall + globe! Each of the five chefs represent a different area of the forces. The detail on the globe is sandblasted. The coils are carefully wound by hand around a steel mandrel and removed once cool.
