ZK/U FELLOW INTRODUCTION // ARI DAVID // FEB 1 - APR 30 2024 Ari David (RO) lives and works in Rotterdam (NL). In their work Ari explores how the social is inscribed in the body, focusing on themes of identity, collectivity and dissent. Through an interdisciplinary body of work that includes writing, video, sound, textiles, installation and performance, they stay grounded in the gestures and choreographies of everyday life to reflect on how bodies are shaped in society. Since 2022, they co-run an other world, an artist-run space in Rotterdam. During their residency at ZK/U, Ari investigated contacts between bodies, viscerality and accumulations of uncomfortable affinities to explore prevailing narratives around notions of labour and failure in Western societies. I am thrilled that as part of my prize, which includes $2500, I am also being given a one month artist residency at S.A.M. later in the year, together with professionnal development sessions with some of Australia’s leading artists, and mentorship from curators. I am ecstatic to be receiving such valued support and professional development. I am looking forward to seeing how my work develops during the focused month of creating at S.A.M. and the future growth of my art practice. Here is some information about the Urbach and the process we went through in applying for this prize. The Theodore Urbach Landscape Prize and Studio Scholarship (“The Urbach”) is a new prize and scholarship offered at Shepparton Art Museum (SAM). The Urbach is designed to encourage continued exploration of Australian landscape painting by contemporary artists. An extensive application process included a detailed online application, attending a thorough PD session run by the talented @caroline_esbenshade, curator at S.A.M. and finally giving a 25 minute presentation to a panel of six esteemed industry judges. The whole process was an excellent self-examination and distillation of my art practice, and I know that I have benefitted from experience. Congratulations Ellen Lee @ellenlee_artist (winner), Anna Mackrell @annamackrell (2nd Runner-up) and Philip Hickingbotham @hicko_art (4th shortlisted artist). For my project I have studied the influences of plants and landscape over Slovenian culture and how the community is taking care of them, visiting natural parks, gardens and museums. To develope my personal project I have taken inspiration from traditional artcrafts, which very often represent flowers, I have asked suggestions to some biologists and borrowed books from the local library. An unusual diorama, both at @layerjevahisa and @horti.kranj invites people to take care of endangered plants and our future. The plants are made from gardening wire and horse hair, also an extincted typical human tradition of the area. The installation will consist of an ‘eternal choir’ created by a series of vocal recordings made on a single tape loop stretched across the project space and running continuously throughout the day (or at least until it finally disintegrates and a new one takes over). Visitors and participants will be invited to listen in then contribute their own voices, the only instruction being that they harmonise with whatever was on the loop before them. Removing the tape machine’s erase head from the equation means that theoretically it should be possible to build up multiple layers of interlocking voices that blend, morph and disintegrate together before your very ears. Although given that this is vintage technology, nothing is ever certain. What we can guarantee is that we’ll create sounds that nobody else has ever made before and we’ll create them together. Both days will culminate in an evening performance featuring all the tape loops that have survived. Howlround was founded by sound designer and radio producer Robin The Fog in 2012 to create recordings, performances and installations entirely from manipulating magnetic tape on a quartet of vintage tape machines, with all digital effects and artificial reverb strictly forbidden. Thomas, ou Figaro. On ne sait plus trop. Thomas à la ville, Figaro sur scène. Mais pour nous les deux se mêlent. Quasi indissociables. Il nous aura fait rire, chanter et presque pleurer. C’est vous dire. Il a même été notre commissaire d’exposition. Un clown multi-casquette on vous disait. Un clown bricoleur. Un clown guitariste. Un clown chanteur. Un clown cuistot, spécialiste de l’omelette à la truffe. C’est ça Thomas pour nous. Ou bien est-ce Figaro ? On ne sait plus trop. Acrobate, on le revoit se balancer sur son trapèze, voltigeant après son inspiration. Il avait plein d’objets, de boîtes, et d’outils en tout genre. Et tout autant de créativité et de ressources dans sa besace. Des idées et des solutions à la pelle, là où il n’y avait même pas de problème. Un clown malicieux, comme le regard de celui de la chanson de notre enfance. On a adoré son omelette, mais lui, ce qu’il a préféré, ce sont les khachapuri. Il nous a dit retenir de la résidence : “La frénésie c'est aussi quelque chose de positif, c'est la joie, l'envie de faire plein de chose à la fois.” Ajoutant “Ben c'est vrai on a fait plein de choses de manière intense et c'était top des repas, à la créa, à la fête et au dormir !” Nous, on retient de lui “Pour guérir la blessure il faut pardonner” et “On ne fait pas d'omelette sans casser des œufs...
