Feeling overwhelmed every once in a while is normal, but don’t normalize a constant state of distress. The key, as always, is to work smarter, not harder. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Here are 3 tips to making the most of your admin time: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 1) Prioritize: Evaluate your admin load and figure out what needs to get done today, this week, and what can wait. Getting the urgent or hard tasks out of the way will give you a sense of accomplishment and free you to get back to the creative work you enjoy! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ 2) Set a limit: You didn’t get into this business to do admin, so give it the time it needs and then move on! My experience as a cis-het, able-bodied, educated, middle-class white woman is markedly free of discomfort. It is very easy for me to surround myself with people who look, act, and think much like I do. Unless I do something to actively disrupt my patterns, my life rolls comfortably on. That is privilege. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Diversity is the topic for today, and I believe it is essential for a full life and thriving business. Life without diversity is bland, mediocre, and, frankly, unjust. Surrounding yourself with comfortable people and comfortable situations leads to comfortable ideas and comfortable outcomes - and I want extraordinary. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Singing to the choir is not the way to create ground-breaking, life-changing music. If we want to be better humans - or better florists or planners or djs or lighting designers - we must not stay comfortable. We must engage with people from different races, ethnicities, backgrounds, education levels, genders, and abilities in order to expand our perspectives and understanding. Growth is uncomfortable, but it is necessary if we want to become better. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Habitual discomfort is also necessary for those with privilege, like myself, to keep us awake to reality. I will not fight injustice if I am asleep to injustice around me and inside me. For me, how I conduct business must be aligned with my character and personal values. Clients and potential clients are not just consumers to be sold and marketed to; their worth is not tied to what I can get out of them. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Scarcity tells us that we must hoard our resources - our time, knowledge, expertise, “trade secrets,” connections - and undermine our competition. Abundance shows us that there is enough to go around; there is no need to step on each other and tear each other down to get ahead. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In business this can look like pricing transparency among fellow event professionals, or sharing tips and tricks that have made our work easier. With clients it can look like focusing on client experience: offering more than the bare minimum in customer service, instead proactively tailoring your systems and offerings to make your clients’ experience as stress free and joyful as possible. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Generosity also shows up here in this IG account!
