Saturday April 20, 2024 is a new milestone moment for me!!! The reasons why that is because I went through so much blood sweat and tears to get to this happy ending!! I cannot believe how I am officially a second degree black belt in the Chuck Norris system!!!!! Let me say that again, second degree in the Chuck Norris system!! It’s been 3 long hard years with dealing of all my sickness I had. From having a stroke to just being sick in general. So I have a list of ppl to say thank u to and I might get sappy so hold on! First up I want to say thank u to @taracox0605 & Mr Gallachger for letting me test!! They r my karate mom and dad and I’ve known both of them almost my whole life!! Secondly I want to give thanks to Logan @logan_funderburk for all of his work with me through days and even some late night trainings! Thank u sir for the one on ones with me they truly paid off. Thirdly I want to thank Mr sheats for being an head instructor and just helping me grow and learn of how to be a better martial artist student! Friday March 22nd 2024 is a new memory and new special date for me! Want to know why? It’s because I have finally pretested for my second degree black belt and I passed!! Three long year of blood sweat and tears and a bunch of music helping me out!! A huge thank u to @logan_funderburk for taking his time out of his days and nights even for our one on one lessons and even letting me stay for Krav! Another huge thank u goes out to Mrs cox for letting me do this pretesting, she’s been my idol and mom and instructor since the first day I met her and have had a found family now because of karate! 🥋 My karate instructor wrote a book! (And, yes…I am considering myself one of the women he trained! Ha!) Quick takeaways: 1. It takes repetition and practice. If you hear about a one hour class…run the other way. That is enough to thoroughly confuse you and not help you at all in an emergency situation. 2. Educate yourself and practice self defense movements regularly….a zillion times! Ladies - if you have questions let me know! I don’t actively practice anymore, but it felt like I lived in that karate studio for years and loved every single minute of it! About: As with your martial art’s training, it is about training for that one moment in one’s life in order to survive that unexpected attack for you and your family. What a whirlwind past two years! I’ve had some of the highest highs and lowest lows since receiving my blackbelt. I’ve gone from being a world champion to having my foot broken in three places just a month before second-degree testing. I’ve been teaching more at the studio in the past two years. I was even given the amazing opportunity to be part of the staff. "You can either fail, and give up. Or, you can fail, and try again next time." During March of 2023, I attempted to get my second degree black belt. I failed. Discouraged and upset, I wanted nothing to do with martial arts ever again. I didn't quit. On Friday the 13th of 2023, I attempted this test again. I passed. Unfortunately in life, things don't always go our way. And it our choices to decide what we're going to do, and where we'll go. I wanted nothing to do with karate for three months. Believing I barely deserved the first class black belt I worked hard for just a few years before. But I never quit, finding my passion again and having a new determination to prove my own mind wrong. Now, as a second degree black belt, I've overcome my own doubtful thought of my performance in martial arts, and made one step closer to being the vision I know I can be. Just over a week ago (on my 46th birthday) I tested for my second degree black belt in Taekwondo. My sister-in-law (@katepaulined) took some photos and video (swipe for videos) of the test. I trained harder than I ever have for this test and am happy to have passed! I found myself managing injuries and even had to delay my test by two weeks to heal from a failed break with a side kick in practice. The board breaking was the most difficult section for me (I almost cried more than once!) and I didn’t make all the breaks at the number of boards required, but I did give it everything I had, so that feels good. I’m excited to go into teaching next year with a bigger bag of tools, and to be able to model for my students that we should always be challenging ourselves and progressing no matter what age or belt level. I was thrilled to have most of my family there who lives locally, along with some of my students who had a very long day in Terrace so they could stay and watch my test! I am so lucky to be their teacher and I can’t wait to see what they achieve next year and beyond. Today I am thankful to be here in Los Angeles CA, the city I was born in, to take a class with my professor: @reydiogobjj . I have been training Jiu Jitsu regularly with minimal breaks since 2005. It is a life long journey that will only end on the day that I die. Mastery & perfection will never be attained, and the journey simply continues and continues and that is what is important. So much of my life that I am proud of & thankful for, comes from the realizations and breakthroughs that I have made while on the mats . Heed my words, young prospective white belts: Competitions and medals come and go, but the most important gift from all this work comes from the people you train with every day, the friendships you develop and things you learn about yourself over the years. Jiu Jitsu is the way. Nothing is better for the soul. (Almost) Seven years as a black belt. I was awarded my 2nd Degree black belt on Sunday morning by my long time mentor Mario Yokoyama. I have been reflecting on what I have learnt in the last few years of training and was planning on writing some long winded multiparagraph tirade but I know the people who want to learn what I have to share will be on the mats with me, not people online. Thank you to my friends and students on the mats who push me everyday, challenge my assumptions about jiu jitsu, and teach me more than they even realize. Thank you to my partner Angie for being so accepting of my crazy work hours and dedication to training and teaching.
