I've had several enquiries as to what's in the Medical Herb Garden Seed Mix and how much it will cost. As I'm still working on the website I thought I would do a quick post and update. Why am I including Salvia Apiana as one of the 12+ herbs in my Medicinal Herb Garden Seed Mix? As many know Salvia Apiana is a First Nation American sacred herb. It is used in cleansing and purification ceremonies. White Sage also has antifungal and antibacterial qualities that make it a perfect ingredient in salves and creams. It also contains eucalyptol, which has a cooling mint-like taste. Leaves can be chewed for hydration or as a breath freshener. In flower in the garden it is COVERED in bees 🐝. I also recently saw a tiny honeyeater come to visit the final white flowers. (This made my week🕺🎉) The trick to sowing and growing Salvia Apiana is fresh seed, and either direct sow or plant out seedlings asap (they loathe pots). The seeds have a naturally low germination rate and as a whole they stagger germination. All good tactics when you are a desert plant. And again why fresh seed is essential to produce adequate healthy seedlings. Each of my Medicinal Herb Garden Seed Mixes will include 30 Salvia Apiana seeds. The Practitioners Kit will contain 50 (I will post about this Mega Seed Mix designed for Herbalists and Practitioners soon). These seeds are produced by my three year old Salvia Apiana plants. Tasmanian seed from plants well used to our climate. Despite what you may have heard, Salvia Apiana is both drought and frost tolerant. What it can't stand is poor drainage. Photograph 1 & 2: Salvia Apiana flowering and seeding in my southern Tassie garden. Salvia Apiana seedpods open gradually and I hand pick the early ones very carefully to avoid damaging nearby pods. The seeds are light brown and when harvested from a healthy plant like this, of a nice size. Fresh seed is the key to good germination rates. 3. Harvested seed ready for cleaning. Cleaning seeds is an important part of the process. Removal of unviable seeds, chaff, foreign objects or insects is not only important for biosecurity when shipping seeds, but also for the seeds themselves, and the subsequent germination rate for those who purchase them. It's a time consuming process but essential. The next step for each seed batch is the testing of germination rates. Another important task. I am currently awaiting my last flight back to bali and looking back over the many pics taken and trying to decide what was the simplest and most effective sustainable solution I saw to creating the most benefit to a food system ..for me it was being done @weingut_melsheimer weingut_melsheimer they converted their grape to biodynamic principles over 20 years ago and to achieve beneficial cover crops they just let the weed succession take it’s natural path , no #seedmixesforpollinators #seedmixesforbutterflies just let the local varieties grow . The best strategy as you can see in the pic is that all the #beneficialgrasses are not #chopedanddropped at the same time .. this is due the the #beneficialinsects that live in this natural #habitate over 120 #butterflys have been identified along with #lizards and other animals. The take away is don’t destroy habitats of natural occurring beneficial plants insects and animals in one go as they will have no where to go !! Thanks Thorston For this simple easy and highly effective observation on nature .. as you said wine is not food but your wine goes very well with it :)) 🙏
