About 3 months before planting out my dahlia tubers, we sadly had to have a massive oak tree removed due to damage it was causing. Consequently the ground was impoverished and just about entirely saw dust from the grinding out of the stump. I was astonished I got anything up to be honest! I added as much compost as I could at the time but now I’m going to really try and boost things by growing a ‘green manure’ crop to build up soil nutrition and microbes before next spring. This is where you grow an assortment (usually) of different seeds, often with nitrogen fixing qualities and slash them just before flowering. The slashed crop can be turned into the soil or left on top if using the ‘chop & drop’ approach. I have mixed together a range of seeds from my stash including nigella, mustard, soy, buckwheat, mung, flax, plus a few packets of flower seed that I’m not likely to bother with. These will be scattered heavily over the surface and hopefully enough will survive any birds entering the ‘fly in’ restaurant. Hopefully my dahlia tubers will still do that they should and be able to be lifted in winter or if it gets wet. The first garden job I wanted to do past visitor season was a harvest! What a beautiful day. Hot morning and then a divine 3 hour thunder storm with a little rain and then back to sunshine. The most perfect day. This is why I love autumn so much! The visitors seeing this asked where this all was in the garden. At a glance no one would realise this is all between shrubs and flowers and that’s the joy of a permaculture garden. Harvests feel like foraging I must admit there’s often burnt food when I run out to go get herbs whilst cooking. Sometimes I get lost and an hour disappears with distraction 😂 a bit of gardening, watching birds and hand picking bugs. But most of all the peace felt in the space which always charges my energy levels. I’m like the energiser bunny when I get back inside! This is a closer look at the finished precompost that was in the red tub, compared to standard worm bedding that isn’t precomposted. Both had: paper cardboard coco coir Precomp also had: 4L leaves (collected many months ago) 2 big handfuls of alfalfa chaff 5L used coffee 1/2 cup molasses a tablespoon of LAB This precomp heated and cooled 3 times, and was in the tub about 3 weeks I think. With a high enough density of compost worms to precomposted bedding, the whole lot can be finshed with by the worms and ready to use in the garden in 3-4 weeks. Compared to standard bedding that takes aprpox 12 weeks. I usually start new worm bins with a 1:1 mix of each and so these composts usually take about 7 or 8 weeks (which is still about a month shorter than purely standard bedding). Of course, there are many variables that can change these time frames. 昨日ナスタチウムの苗を買って植えました🌱 昨日は用事で、朝から夜まで何もできないかと思っていたのですが、思いがけず早く終わったので。ずっと植えたかったニラも種を蒔きました。収穫できるのは来年らしいのですが、楽しみです。 お部屋に入れていたカレーリーフも庭へ🪴ショックだったのは、もともと青々と育っていた葉っぱが🌿黄色く弱っていたこと。それで、青々と育つ新芽だけ残して、下の方の弱った葉を切りました。あるいは、育っていく過程で、下の方の葉が散るのが普通なのか？よくわからないのですが、暖かい外気とお日様の力で元気に育ってくれると良いなと思います。 3枚目は、名前もわからない植物。同じものがあちこちに芽を出しています。 先週、今年初めてのブンブンを発見し、昨日も暗くなってから、明るいところに集まってくるブンブンを何匹も見つけました。その度に捕獲→退治したのですが😅植えたものの何割残ってくれるかなぁ…と心配も。数年前にわざわざ取り寄せて、収穫を楽しみに植えた強いはずのラズベリーも根をやられてダメになり…そんな被害もしょっちゅうです。残ってくれるものがありますよう祈ります🙏🌿☺️ #土は赤土と手作り堆肥とセラミック土壌改良材のこれだけDE充分。底に軽石とブロックシリコミリオンAも入れました。手作り堆肥は #panasonic#生ごみ処理機です。これまでのところ一度も故障もなく好調です。

Just a note from me, @carolinaelizabethart an ORS member, to share a bit of how I use companion planting in my rose garden, either for rose health or simply for aesthetics. Salvia, Nepeta/Cat mint, lavender, artemisia, and sage for plant health to repel some insects destructive to roses. There are also several garlic and different allium bulbs that I spread throughout the garden to repel rabbits and insects, including bores. Plants in the onion family have also been known to minimize black spot on rose leaves. I finally successfully germinated milkweed from seed! 🦋🦋 I put these seeds in the refrigerator in a wet paper towel inside a plastic bag for a month, then placed the bag on top of a warm area in my kitchen for a week. And finally success! I had previously tried germinating milkweed seeds in seed starting soil (after cold stratifying) a few times with nothing ever happening. Sometimes don’t you feel like these tendrils reaching for the trellis with growth and expansion, and when you finally reach the trellis it’s so satisfying? I’ve been cheering these plants on for a while, knowing the upcoming heat might affect the harvest and I was like YESSSSSS!!! 🙌 when I saw them today. They grew a lot more after rain yesterday.
