🍯🌿✨Herbal electuary: powdered herbs in honey! I got a head cold last week and was reminded of the overwhelm that can happen with supplements & medicines. Elecampane is a plant that’s near and dear to my heart. Its brilliant yellow blossoms, large lung shaped leaves and strong presence in the garden makes it one of my favorite medicinal plants to grow. The most potent medicinal qualities of Elecampane are found in its roots. Bitter, slightly sweet and aromatic, these roots help stimulate movement of cold, damp and stagnant conditions and offer warming support to the respiratory and digestive systems. Step one of making Elecampane (Inula helenium) root cough syrup. First I do a deep decoction in the slow cooker, to break down the root and release the benefits. A deep decoction is from 8 hours to 24 hours. This one has been 14 hours. In a moment I'll be straining out the root with a cloth and then reducing it to half the amount of water. Then it'll be time to create the syrup. Elecampane root cough syrup is good for productive coughs, aids back and chest pain caused by coughing, helps shift mucus from the nasal passages and lungs. It also soothes redness and swelling of the tonsils in tonsillitis. WARNING: This can be a laxative in large doses. Do not use if you are allergic to the asteraceae family. Do not use in pregnancy. 🌻🫁 Elecampane (Inula helenium) 🫁🌻 🧑🏼🌾 Almost two weeks ago I harvested Elecampane root to have some lung medicine on hand. Just in time as the shoots are already slowly emerging from dormancy. 🌻 In the sunflower family Elecampane is a perennial that makes multiple tall flower stalks each year with sunflower like flowers akin to Jerusalem artichoke flowers. 🥬 Her leaves are large and downy and are perhaps even more deer resistant than sunflowers which affords us more options when choosing planting locations. 🫁 Elecampane is antiviral and antibacterial for lung ailments specifically, as well as an expectorant. 🫁 I relied heavily on Elecampane when our family came down with COVID for lung health. I also use Elecampane for athsma relief and lung congestion, the expectorant qualities help greatly. 🍺 In the past I made Elecampane herbal beer. Despite elecampane's powerfully pungent flavor, the beer was everyone's favorite! I was so surprised that she could make such a gentle delicious beverage. 🍶 I gave the last of my Elecampane medicine to my sister to help my young niece with her ongoing cronic cough spasms. I am glad to hear it is helping her find relief immediately after taking! 🚙 Now I need more medicine so I am harvesting this special plant who was grown from seed of my mentor's plant and that traveled with us from our last homestead garden 4 years ago. 🤗 The roots were so huge and numerous that we will have medicine for years! 🙏🏼 I immediately gifted several large roots to an herbalist friend who was visiting. 🍯 With the rest I am tincturing and candying in honey to have medicine ready for next season. 🧑🏼🌾 After severing the roots I replanted the crown which had already self divided into at least 7 seperate plants. I could have divided them further, but with such a generous plant there is no need. 💚 I am in love with this beautiful plant who is so easy to grow and offers abundant medicine for years to come!!
