Yarrow also has medicinal uses. Exciting! Another new solitary bee in the orchard. I believe this is a female Short-fringed mining bee. A very good pollinator due to its long hairs, which can take even more pollen from flower to flower as the bee enjoys the nectar. They have two generations so you can see them in spring and summer and have short tongues so plants like dandelions, willow, brambles, thistles, umbellifers and fruit flowers are very important to them. Mining bees need undisturbed soil to make their burrows in so the orchard is a perfect habitat. Insect houses provide a habitat for beneficial insects, such as pollinators and pest controllers, which can help improve plant health and yield in your garden. They attract a diverse range of insects, including solitary bees, ladybugs, and lacewings, all of which play crucial roles in maintaining a balanced ecosystem. Insect house use typically begins in early spring with pollinator activity peaking in the warmer summer months. Some varieties of solitary pollinators will continue to use the houses through the fall and the houses can be left outside year round. Place your insect house in the area that you want the insects’ help pollinating and protecting- flower bed, garden, blossoming trees, bushes or stumps are excellent locations. Insects prefer it warm and dry, protected from the wind and rain. Pendant que certains travaillaient, moi j'étais totalement en train de glander dans l'herbe avec tous mes copains les moustiques et autres cafards ! En vrai, y'à que moi qui glande, parce que quand on regarde de près, on s'aperçoit que tout ce mini monde est très actif. Y'a les fleurs qui poussent, les pollinisateurs qui pollinisent, les fourmis qui font des autoroutes, les chenipottes qui se transforment en papillons, les insectes qui bouffent les fleurs, les insectes plus gros qui bouffent les insectes qui bouffent les fleurs, et entre temps tout le monde se reproduit. Plus on observe, plus on palpe du doigt le cycle de la vie, la symbiose et l'équilibre de la nature. Chacun dépend des autres, et ce cycle se répète année après année, saison après saison. Moi, je les regarde et je comprends pourquoi nous, les humains, on est à part. On est une anomalie de la nature. L'évolution de l'espèce humaine est telle qu'elle ne s'inscrit plus dans cet équilibre. C'est un peu triste et désolant, mais c'est bien de s'en rendre compte. Déjà, ça permet d'apprécier la beauté si fragile de ce monde discret, voire invisible, et pourtant si abouti. Bref, ici, encore un petit bonhomme qui fait partie de la catégorie "petit insecte qui mange des fleurs et qui se fera à son tour manger par des plus gros que lui". Ce petit, c'est le Lupérus Portugais (Exosoma lusitanicum), un coléoptère tout orange, grand comme un ongle. Son kiff à lui, c'est les pétales de jonquilles. Il est inscrit sur liste rouge dans le Limousin. Peut-être que dans un futur proche, on pourra plus le croiser si facilement. Alors je voulais lui rendre hommage. Spring is here, which means aphids 🤮 Aphids are typically outdoor pests (but can occur on indoor houseplants as well) that feed on the sap from plants. There are many different species and come in many different colors (brown, yellow, green, black, red, or grey). They reproduce quickly and effectively, not even needing a male. Fun fact - the last picture shows aphids that have been parasitized by parasitic wasps! If you see weirdly round aphids like this, leave them as they will hatch a new generation of beneficial wasps. If treating for aphids on indoor houseplants, squish them on sight (gross but necessary) and release a few rounds of lacewing larvae. Treating aphids in an outdoor space can be much more complex. Generally, it is best to pre-treat an area with beneficials early in spring and late in fall to give your space the best chance at success. They are solitary wasps and so they don’t make nests or have large colonies like the social wasps do. Yellowjackets and paper wasps are examples of social wasps. These tiny parasitoid wasps are beneficial insects (natural enemies) that help us the garden by killing pests insects that are harmful to our plants. Attract these parasitic wasps to your yard and garden by planting a variety of flowers to ensure the adult wasps have access to a continuous supply of pollen and nectar. They particularly like the smaller flowers of alyssum, cilantro and other herbs in the carrot family (caraway, carrot, celery, chervil, coriander, cumin, dill, fennel, lovage, etc), as well as flowers in the Asteraceae family which is also commonly called the sunflower/daisy/aster family. It has been a spectacularly intense and early bloom this year, but petal fall is upon us in the San Joaquin Valley. Thrips have been relatively light so far, but we see that starting to change in certain microclimates, terrain and different varieties. Luckily beneficials like lady beetle, assassin bug, hover fly and lacewings have had time to establish. I found this lacewing larvae browsing through the open calyx of a Lisbon lemon - love to see that! Not the typical beautiful flower picture I usually post but I wanted y’all to know how important creating a healthy backyard ecosystem is to the health of your plants and the surrounding environment! If you spray with pesticide, organic or not, you’re also going to kill the beneficial insects that will likely come devour the nasty pests in a week or 2. Can you spot the lacewing eggs and lady bug larvae? Now obviously, I can’t use this flower in a bouquet so that’s a loss, but the number of beneficial insects this draws in to participate in the pest battle in the future is worth it! Plus, isn’t it comforting knowing flowers you get from me aren’t covered in carcinogens? Ladybugs and lacewings for the win!
