If there is one person living or dead that I would love to meet, it would be the late Madame Chiang, or Soong Mei-ling, one of the most powerful women in modern history. Born to a wealthy Christian family in Shanghai during the waning years of the Qing Dynasty, Soong Mei-long was educated in the US and was fluent in English, a skill that came very handy when she rallied support for the Nationalist cause during World War II. “The only thing oriental about me is my face” she was once quoted telling reporters who were enthralled by her bearing and disposition, seemingly as the epitome of what China could become - modern and educated. By the time of Madame Chiang’s death in the US in 2003, she had lived through three centuries, both world wars, and Taiwan’s transition to democracy. Not a few regard her as a corrupt, power-hungry vestige of China and Taiwan’s authoritarian past but on the basis of her iron will and confidence alone - She was said to have been comfortable around heads of state and persons who wielded power and money - which even today elude many. Melvin and I are photographed with the armored (?) Cadillac she used when she visited Taiwan after Chiang Ching-kuo’s death in 1988. [TKUCLC X NSLI-Y] 📢故宮、士林官邸文化之旅 #cultrualexcursion 🗓️2023-09-27 終於迎接來了第一次的文化出遊啦！ 📍第一站帶學生到故宮博物院欣賞70多萬件中華文物珍寶，其中「翠玉白菜」、「毛公鼎」、「肉形石」三大鎮館之寶特別向學生介紹了，並讓學生找出白菜上的兩隻小蟲是什麼，結束參觀後大家此起彼落的互相討論剛剛看了什麼。 📍第二站前往士林官邸正館，也就是過去總統蔣中正與夫人蔣宋美齡的住所，現列為國定古蹟。學生看起來對台灣的歷史都很有興趣！ 📍最後一站抵達台北藝術表演中心，體驗了迴路參觀，一睹舞台的隱藏角落、演職人員平時來往通行的廊道、或是俯瞰士林地區周邊景致的開放式觀景平台。一天的行程就到這裡告一段落啦！希望學生對中華文物、歷史及特色建築有更多的認識，期待下一次文化之旅！ Finally welcomed our first cultural excursion! The first stop was the Palace Museum to appreciate more than 700,000 Chinese cultural relics and treasures. Among them, the three major treasures of the museum, " jadeite cabbage with insects ", " Duke Mao Tripod " and " meat-shaped stone ", were specially introduced to the students and asked to find them. What are the two bugs on the cabbage? After the tour, everyone started discussing with each other what they had just seen. The second stop was to the main building of Shilin Official Residence, which was the residence of President Chiang Kai-shek and his wife Chiang Soong Meiling. It is now listed as a national historic site. The students seem to be very interested in the history of Taiwan. The last stop was at the Taipei Performing Arts Center, where we experienced a loop tour, taking a look at the hidden corners of the stage, the corridors where performers and crew usually pass, or the open viewing platform overlooking the surrounding scenery of the Shilin area. The one-day trip came to an end here!
