🎶 Is Sing and Sign BSL or Makaton? 🤙🏻 The short answer is no! But here’s the long answer too! BSL (British Sign Language) is a complete language, which includes grammatical structure. It is specifically designed to be a language in its own right and is a replacement for the spoken word. Sing and Sign, on the other hand, was developed with the help of speech and language experts to encourage early communication using natural gestures and 'key word' signing. It sits alongside the spoken word to enhance communication, rather than replace speech. Our signs 'fall away' as children's speech becomes clear and develops at its natural pace. Makaton is specifically designed for use by children with delayed speech and /or additional needs and often uses several signs per sentence. Sing and Sign is ‘key word’ signing meaning we use only one sign per sentence to enhance understanding of the spoken word. While Sing and Sign are not affiliated with Makaton, if you know Makaton you will recognise many of our signs. Life can be very frustrating as an independent, strong minded little person! It is particularly hard if you can't make your grown up understand what you are saying! Adding a gesture to a word not only accelerates language comprehension but REALLY eases frustration leaving your toddler to work on developing their words without stress. 🤔 There will be many times when you and your baby see something and you don’t know the sign for it. Whilst our online sign dictionary is brilliant, there are of course things not in it, and more importantly you don’t want to miss the moment to talk about what you see with your little one. Our golden rule is always be inventive and make up a sign. 😁 As long as you then consistently use that sign when talking about that thing with your baby it really doesn’t matter if no one else understands it.
