Maui Day 2: With it being Easter Sunday and we weren’t sure what was opened, it was the perfect opportunity to drive around West Maui. We had read on Trip Advisor that there was a drive that rivals Road to Hana except more dangerous with narrow roads along the cliffs. Unfortunately it said on the map that driving through a portion of that route invalidates your car rental agreement, so we turned around at the Nakalele Blowhole. That’s fine; still plenty to places to stop off and check out. 1. Driving towards Lahaina where the fires ravaged the area last year 2. Nakalele Blowhole: our turnaround point on the West Maui loop. Quite a trek down from the road to watch it unpredictably spout off. 3. Honolua Bay: looks like a nice place to snorkel 4. Slaughterhouse Beach: where workers from a nearby slaughterhouse used to go to cool off back in the day 5. Kapalua Coastal Trail: Easy 1.7 mile out and back trail but we skipped out hiking around the Ritz Carlton due to time. We wanted to make sure to get to Leoda’s while it was still opened for pie. Pie > fancy resort. 6. Hawaiian Monk Seal resting in Honokowai Beach. These guys are just as protected as the turtles, so there was space cordoned off for them. 7. Rainbow near Kanapali Beach. Just as rare of a sighting as public parking for the beach since it’s located at the Hyatt Resort. 8. Chocolate MacNut Pie from Leoda’s. We got there right before it closed and luckily they still had pie. 9. Sunset at the Oluwalu Beach where we also saw some whales. 10. UPDATE‼️The Highline community is loosely associated. Like surfers, we keep an eye on others to share knowledge on being respectful of people and places. Recently there was a person from another country who left a lineup for days. The individual was asked to take it down, and it was taken down after the community was upset and requested to remove it. The line being left up that long in a public place is not ok. This person not respecting the local community is not acceptable. We apologize that this person wasn’t spoken to sooner and that it had the impact that it did. We have explained the impact and consequences he would face if he continued. That visiting person apologizes for their actions and is committed to respect. Highlining is a sport, and rigging lines are technical. Many work as professional riggers and arborists with a lot of knowledge about how to rig safely and minimize any impact on the area. Cutting a Highline under tension is dangerous. There are safety systems involved in case of failure, and there are significant forces involved. Cutting a line can cause injury due to recoil and environmental harm due to a line dropping into the water and getting caught on the reef. With a deep respect for the land and ocean, we prioritize the well-being of our environment and strive for no impact on people, land, and ocean ecosystems. When rigging lines to trees, we take precautions to protect the bark, using appropriate padding to prevent damage. Over the ocean, we employ a tagline to keep the line out of the water without disturbing marine life. We ensure timely de-rigging to prevent eyesores and hazards, entanglement risks, and wind damage. We respect cultural heritage and environmental preservation, avoiding rigging in culturally significant areas where plant preservation is crucial. Our commitment is to safe rigging practices and environmental stewardship, protecting and preserving the site, and respecting the community. Humble and sincere apologies that we were not there to prevent the impact of this individual. Know that we will be looking out and making every effort to educate and stop those that do not respect the culture and the land.

Four different angles of Mokuleia Beach. This secluded feeling beach was one of our favorites yesterday. The pine trees and chickens everywhere added a different feel than other beaches, and a chicken literally laid an egg a few feet behind us. 😂 This would not be our top snorkeling recommendation although we did swim with a massive sea turtle here.

Soaking up that Hawaiian sun with a good book before snorkeling 🤿 at Black rock on #kaanapalibeach ! I love beach hopping in Maui and checking out all the fun snorkel spots! Some of my favorites are: 1. Black Rock beach at Kaanapali- easy to get in and out , go early and find a shady spot near the black rock cliff! Snorkel along the black rock edge and you’ll see lots of fish , turtles 🐢 and lots of other marine life. I’ve spotted an eagle ray here before too! 2. Honolua Bay- Up north on the west side , Honolua bay is a protected marine sanctuary ! You’ll have hike in through a beautiful tropical rain forest. There is no sand here as it’s a beach with all large stones, it’s a bit difficult getting in and out but the snorkeling is worth it! 3. Kapalua Bay- (Background photo) If you want a beautiful sandy beach and a good snorkel spot this one is a great option! Kid friendly with restrooms nearby! Typically calm water . Both sides of the bay have a great reef along the rock formations! 4. Slaughter house- Mokuleia Bay Accessed by a staircase off the main road. Great place to snorkel but waves can be tougher in winter, go to the right for the best spots to snorkel. Be careful of the large boulders that jut out of the water! They are fun to swim around and make you feel like you’re in an under water city! Here you’ll see turtles, large parrotfish, cornetfish, Moorish idols, and needlefish, among others! 5. Baby beach- Baby beach is a great family spot and a perfect place to learn how to snorkel! The ocean is relatively calm and shallow here thanks to the long coral reef that extends about 100 yards out protecting the shoreline from waves! There are many other great snorkel spots on Maui but these are some of my favorites! If you’ve been let me know what your favorite beaches were! Slaughterhouse Beach, Kaanapali, Maui, HI. One of the most incredible snorkeling beaches on the island. The beach has a huge sandy area to relax with covered tree areas in the back for shade. Limited parking is found up top off of the Hyw. There is a well kept staircase that takes you down to the beach. The massive coral reef is right up close to the beach. Even the amature snorkler can enjoy seeing all the bright colored tropical fish. The color of the water is unreal. This picture is not edited at all.
