Smelling Jars is one of the activities I use to help my children isolate their sense of smell. It enhance their olfactory sense to detect and percepts molecular odors in the smelling jar. To repeat this activity at home, you'll need: eight matching jars split into two sets of four and four items with different smells – essential oils or fresh spices work well. I just use whatever available in the kitchen- coffee, cinnamom, star anise and cotton ball dip with some essential oil. They just love to choose this work, again and again!😊 #mamamaryamberkongsi #montessoriathome #olfactorysens #smellingjar #diymontessori #mawarorkedmateen #4years10months #2years10months

DIY THEMED SMELLING JARS Smelling jars are a classic montessori material - this DIY version is loosely inspired by them. I’ve made Babe smelling jars in the past, but they kind of fell off my radar until I saw a few on my feed in the past couple weeks. My friend @marlierosenberg made smelling jars for her son with leftover herbs from Thanksgiving and Emily over at @madetomontessori made the perfect Christmas version for her son that I knew Babe would love! I love to do activities to help develop all of Babe’s five senses: taste, sight, touch, hearing, and smell. The smelling jars help to develop the sense of smell, which facilitates memory learning. The brain connects smells to memories, and this particular set of Christmas smells will hopefully be part of some very happy memories for Babe. This set includes cinnamon sticks, crushed candy cane, and a piece of our balsam fir wreath, which has a stronger scent than our fraser fir tree! I got the jars for $1 each at a local discount store. If you don’t have jars, you could use small containers covered with mesh or wax paper with holes, using elastics to keep the covers on. Overall, this is an easy and inexpensive activity to set up. I plan on reusing the jars for different themes - I’ll share when I do! Babe has been thoroughly enjoying these jars for the past week. Do you think your little one might enjoy something similar?

It’s getting warmer again in Berlin and with it, the subway also gets smellier… In the 19th century, you could have used this little handy smelling jar to make you feel more comfortable. In it, one kept good smelling oils, usually added to salt such as ammonium carbonate. Whenever one was about to faint, one could open the lid and get (an ephemeral) relief – either because of the good smelling oil or because the ammonium carbonate was said to help you breath. This smelling salt jar from the 19Th century was used in Germany and is today’s #TuesdayTreasure and one of more than 285.000 objects in the collection of the MEK. #285000malMEK #MEKDahlem #Steglitz #Berlin #museum #MEKDahlem #DepotDienstag #Dahlem #WiederWasGelernt #Staatlichemuseenzuberlin #depot #behindthescenes #TuesdayTreasures #TreasureTuesday #collection #visitberlin #IchbindannmalMEK #WhatsThatSmell #WeilWirDichLieben #BVG #smellingJar #perfume #parfum ------ © Staatliche Museen zu Berlin, Museum Europäischer Kulturen
