For some Tuesday Treasure, here is a booklet from the recently processed Sierra Club (Redwood Chapter) Collection (https://oac.cdlib.org/findaid/ark:/13030/c8q52xgz/) that includes some magnificent images of photographs taken by Philip Hyde, a pioneering landscape photographer and conservationist. Hyde attended Ansel Adams’ photography program at the California School of Fine Arts beginning in 1946 and enrollrf in the full-time professional photography training program, the first of its kind, in 1947. He eventually became the primary conservation photographer for the Sierra Club, where he was commissioned to provide photographs for “battle books” that helped the Sierra Club lead a coalition of environmental groups to establish numerous national parks, wilderness areas, and national seashores. #SierraClub #TuesdayTreasure #SpecialCollections

We have several images in our Willa Cather Foundation Collections and Archives of the Willa Cather and Edith Lewis gravesite at the Old Burying Ground in Jaffrey, New Hampshire. Today’s #TuesdayTreasure, just a day before the 77th anniversary of Cather’s death, highlights some of them. The landscape image, of an unknown date, shows the southwest corner near where Cather would be buried in 1947, and joined by Lewis after death twenty-five years later in 1972. That particular view of the mountain is now obscured by woods; near the center of the image you can just make out the Shattuck Inn, about a mile away in the distance. Sixties-era controversy for this week’s #tuesdaytreasure from The Beatles and their infamous “Butcher Cover.” Photographed by Robert Whitaker, the album cover shows the band in white coats and covered with decapitated dolls and raw meat. Meant by Whitaker to be a symbolic critique of beatlemania, the band insisted it was a protest against the Vietnam War. In response to concern over the gory imagery, Capitol Records launched “Operation Retrieve” and replaced the cover image with a shot of the band posed around a steamer trunk. All copies were ordered shipped back to the label, leading to its scarcity and popularity with collectors. It took almost 50 years, but Capitol apparently relaxed enough to press the cover on CD in 2014. Read the full story, including the art of the second and third state peel, at the link in our story. #TuesdayTreasure #ThankfulTuesday Yesterday I had the joy of being an upcoming guest on Wonderful Morrison's podcast, "Evolution of the Fempreneur." I expected to regale Wonderful and her listeners with a few antics and vulnerabilties, connecting delightfully ordinary stories to God's extraordinary love and faithfulness, but before she'd even clicked "record," I was having a teary moment as we remembered our first meeting, our mutual respect and admiration, our ability to keep the main thing the main thing (words we didn't use but the gist of our pre- and post-chitchat). God has continued to surround me with the most amazing women and I pray that I will never take their support and encouragement for granted. Truly a gift! Truly a blessing!

He got his start in the mid-60s playing with John Coltrane before branching out on his own to get weird in all the best ways. This week's #TuesdayTreasure is a sampler made by Sophia Woodbury (1803-1877) of Northfield when she was 15 years old. The Society's collections include a number of samplers from the late 18th and early 19th century. Girls and young women created these intricate pieces of needlework to display sewing and literacy skills. This sampler was passed down in Sophia's family and then donated to the Society by the family of her great-grandson. #tuesdaytreasure spotlight today on Memphis Soul queen Ann Peebles and her third studio LP Straight from the Heart. Peaking at 188 on the Billboard 200, it was the first taste of commercial success for Peebles. The record began to make the case for her Hi label as surpassing cross-train rival Stax Records for primo Memphis 70’s #soul. It even poached a member of Stax Records house band The Memphis Horns, as Wayne Jackson went hard on the soul horn for the track “I Pity the Fool.” The world of soul (and Mr. T) would never be the same. Founder Mildred Rhoads Bennett, left, is shown in Willa Cather’s attic bedroom, c. 1963, and Carrie Miner Sherwood a few years later in 1967. Queen B is finally celebrating The Year of The Dragon one month late with this scaly menagerie from past sales. We have two 'flavors' here; Asian and European, which evolved separately but oddly are both believed in local folklore to be the adult, all-grown up form of a smaller aquatic animal. In Asia, it's the brave carp who metamorphosizes into a mighty dragon, in Europe it's a blind, delicate cave salamander, the olm, that shockingly turns into a menacing man-eater. This glorious 4' long hand-painted dragon is Asian: sinuous, and able to fly without wings. Asian dragons are elemental spirits personifying nature, i.e. sky dragons, water dragons, and in 2024 it's the year of the Wood Dragon, which brings change and abundance. The dragon is one of 12 symbols of the Chinese Zodiac used throughout Asia, and the only one that is a mythical animal. The Chinese zodiac uses 1 sign per year in 12-year cycles. The other signs are the Monkey, Ox, Snake, Rooster, Tiger, Horse, Dog, Rabbit, Goat, Pig, and Rat. Those born in the year of the Dragon can be charismatic and powerful leaders but may also be unpredictable or selfish. This gawain (a Ming Dynasty invention made up of tea bowl, saucer and lid) shows another aspect of Asian dragons. The dragon on the lid symbolizes the Emperor (or "Male") while the phoenix on the bowl symbolizes the Empress (or "Female") so these make a nice wedding gift. These 2 vintage Beanie Babies handily show the difference between east and west: a long-bodied, bearded Asian dragon vs. the heftier, winged western dragon. Toy-maker Ty Warner debuted Beanie Babies at the World Toy Fair in New York City in 1993 and has since put out at least 12 different dragons. The western dragon here is "Scorch", while the Asian is "Zodiac". Ty even made one named "Y Ddraig Goch" (The Red Dragon) taken from the classic flag of Wales. This week’s #TuesdayTreasure, to quote Shirley Bassey and the Propellerheads, is reflective of the notion that “… it's all just a little bit of history repeating.” Like many of our historic sites, the Farmers and Merchants Bank had an earlier restoration before the extensive work done in recent years. The building was first refurbished in 1961-1962 as the offices and museum of the Willa Cather Pioneer Memorial. These images from 1961 in our archives show work in the basement, where our new permanent exhibit, “Making a Place: A Long History of Red Cloud” opened last week. This week’s #tuesdaytreasure is an architect’s model carved of basic chalk rock in the form of Pier 5 of the Meridian Bridge. 100 years ago the bridge was completed for $1.3 million dollars. In 1947, the City of Yankton bought the bridge for $700,000, and made it toll free in 1953. Follow the Yankton Meridian Bridge Centennial Facebook page for a list of 2024 Celebrations for the Meridian Highway Bridge.
