I don't know about you but lately it has been WORK to find joy. It's been a very busy season at home, and we have so much to be thankful for, but life is just HARD and STRESSFUL sometimes. I have been leaning in to the passage below in Colossians this week that I pray over my kids and my family. See, our joy and strength doesn't naturally come from ourselves. It comes from knowing and learning more about our Creator and His character. Who he is. Today I choose to lean on God, where my strength and truest joy comes from. I'm so thankful for all the bright and beautiful things he has for me and you. Thankful my mom caught this moment of eye squinting smile and joy in this picture as we made and ate some of my grandma's recipes celebrating her 1 year in heaven. From ‭Colossians 1:9-12 MSG‬ "...As you learn more and more how God works, you will learn how to do your work. For today’s #TreasureTuesday, we will be looking at early-Medieval Cornish pottery 🏺 • Dated from the late 7th to the late 11th century, EMCP has been found across Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, including sites at Gwithian and St.Buryan (see 3rd photo) • Its known for its distinctive grass-marked bases, and a lot of EMCP pottery vessels also have bar lug handles 🌾 • Albeit small assemblages, EMCP has also been found on the South East coast of Ireland, in Waterford and Wexford 🌊 • I’m fortunate enough to work closely with Irish archaeologist Clare McCutcheon; a leading specialist in Medieval ceramics, based in Ireland 🇮🇪 • Clare dealt with the pottery assemblages of Wexford and Waterford which contained EMCP, and thinks the assemblages to be more representative of a personal collection, rather than evidence for trading (for the latter, you would expect a larger assemblage) • While places like Gwithian has provided earlier dates for EMCP, the dates for the Irish assemblages were found to be 11th century, possibly 12th • This shows that early-Medieval Cornish pottery, with its bar lugs and grass-marked bases, enjoyed a relatively long period of production 🥰

#TreasureTuesday - Discovered on the Atocha site in March 2009 This "Silver Gilt Rosewater Platter" was discovered on the Nuestra Senora de Atocha and has a unique Bishop’s Coat of Arms. It is rare to find such a unique piece with such detailed markings. This type of platter was used by the Church to hold aromatic water scented with rose petals, known as rosewater. Clergy members would cleanse their hands in the rose water before performing clerical ceremonies. Senior Conservator, John Corcoran discovered some very intriguing information about the platter. The marking in the center of the plate bears a crest. Preliminary research indicates that the markings are likely those of a Bishop. There is a hat and a cross at the top of the shield along with a set of six tassels on each side of the shield. The Church has a ranking system much like the military and each ranking is symbolized by a different number of tassels. It’s time for #TreasureTuesday with Karen the Curator! Today is #NationalPicnicDay and I wanted to share some picnic-related artifacts from our collection. Where is your favorite place in Johnson County to have a picnic? 1. These brightly colored plastic plates were handy for picnics. The divided compartments and sturdy design made eating outside easier. 2.. There are a group of people having a picnic on the banks of Sugar Creek in the background of this oil painting. The painting is by artist Grant Christian and was created in 1986. 3. Many of us can remember using this type of picnic basket with handles. 4. #TreasureTuesday ⭐️Check out this amazing find by @unveilingantiquity ⭐️ See our Blog for the full story! “On one particular day, I hit a repeatable 10 on my Equinox 800 and I decided to dig it. Much to my surprise, I found an old key fob with the name, “Arthur DeMik” and “Hammond Ind. RFD.1” on it. “RFD” stands for “Rural Free Delivery” and it was the early stages of our modern postal system, before street addresses were implemented.I continued to do some research and I was able to find Arthur’s daughter!I mailed her the fob and a book containing other local history, including the picture of her family in front of the residence, which she was born at and lived at briefly before her immediate family relocated.Finding the fob was interesting, but finding a lot of history around it and being able to give it to his daughter several decades later as a memento of her father was priceless!”

For today's #TreasureTuesday, I would like to take some time to show some appreciation to the all the incredible archaeologists and heritage workers I've had the opportunity to know and work with, past and present 🥰 ♦ Thankyou for inviting me to the Institute for the Archaeologists of Ireland (IAI) 2024 conference in Limerick last week 🇮🇪 . I had an amazing time, and it was incredible to meet some many people who are leading their fields; especially the keynote speaker, Gabriel Cooney, who's done a lot of work on stone tools and their distribution across Europe 🪨 ♦ The company was great, the talks were great, and the food was gorgeous, so a big thankyou also to the Absolute Hotel for hosting us 🥗 ♦ I'm please to announce that we've been invited to give a talk at next year's conference on all things Portable Antiquities Scheme 📝 ♦ I was also honoured to combine two of my passions on Sunday, where I was keynote speaker at the annual Trefoil of Cornwall AGM (Girlguiding Cornwall) ♦ Not strictly PAS-related, I talked about my experience revealing, conserving and restoring Medieval frescoes in St.Blaise chapel in Portugal last autumn, but don't worry, I announced my new role at the end, and look forward to talking to individual Trefoil Guilds about what the PAS does 🇵🇹 ♦ And finally, we still have some slots left for our Finds Day in Truro, at Royal Cornwall Museum, on Saturday 4th May, and we'd love to see you there! 😍 ♦ Oll an gwella, Laura

Today’s (little late) #TreasureTuesday comes courtesy of the National Museum of Ireland’s archaeological collections 🍀 • From their Ór (‘Gold’) exhibition, they had several beautiful lunulae on display 🔱 • Dating from the Bronze Age - and evidence of Cornwall’s prehistoric trading links - 4 gold lunulae have been found in Cornwall (historic museum finds), and 3 of these are the “classical” type • These 3 “classical” type lunulae were probably made in Ireland, and traded with, or gifted to, Cornwall ☀️ • 📍2 of them were found at Harlyn Bay, and 1 was found near St.Merryn • Only a handful of lunulae, mostly fragments, exist on the PAS database, and they tend to be concentrated to the South West area, which may be due to the idea of a prehistoric trading area known as the “Atlantic Façade”🌊 • Hopefully one day, we can get the historic lunulae from Cornwall tested, and see where the gold came from… - Was it Cornish gold commissioned in Irish style? - Was it Irish gold, gifted to somebody in Cornwall? - Did it belong to someone who emigrated from Ireland? - Was it brought back by someone who visited Ireland? … I guess ultimately we’ll never know all of the details for sure, but it’s nice to think about how Cornwall and Ireland’s relationship goes back more than 4000 years! 🥰 • You can find two of Cornwall’s lunulae on display at Royal Cornwall Museum, in Truro @cornwall_museum 🖤🤍🖤

With a fully booked appointment schedule, it was a super busy but rewarding day! 🥰 . Plus, a massive thankyou to @theorangerycafepenzance for preparing me some of their gorgeous quiche for lunch.🥬 ☼ We took in a total of 137 finds, and we were lucky enough to once more have a variety of finds from a variety of time periods... to name a few: - Prehistoric flint blades, arrowheads - Prehistoric stone axeheads - Iron Age loom weights, & poss.beads - Roman brooches & coins - E-M metalwork, and poss.ingots - Medieval coins - Medieval to post-Med pottery - post-Medieval buttons - Poss. cup marked stone? ☼ A massive thankyou to Emma for helping us on the day - a student at @truro_college, Emma is studying their BSc in Archaeology, and we love being able to give students real first-hand heritage experiences!📜 ☼ In fact, we're looking for people to help assist us at two of our upcoming Finds Days, especially if you're a student! You hate to see it, but it's common to find rodents in ductwork! "Steve W. and Larry S. were the Amistee technicians who performed our duct cleaning. It had been at least 10 years since last cleaning. They (process) were more thorough than previous company. They blew compressed air into all registers and return vents to loosen as much “junk” as possible while sucking air with BIG vacuum through holes in ductwork adjacent to furnace. Before and after pics showed dramatic improvement. They found not one but (gross) three dead rodents in ductwork. Ugh. Steve and Larry were thorough, polite, and efficient. Positive experience. We have another special #TreasureTuesday artifact to share! This Woodstock Collegiate Institute sweater is from the 1940s. It was donated to us with a variety of records from the estate of Frances Sutton (nee Denney). Frances was born in Woodstock in 1929 and attended high school at W.C.I. @wcireddevil After high school, Frances was hired as women’s editor at the “Woodstock Sentinel-Review” newspaper, and a year later moved to Kitchener-Waterloo for the same position at The Record newspaper, at the young age of 21. She paved the way for female journalists in Canada, fighting for women’s rights to be taken seriously in the field, and was eventually involved in the provincial press council. @waterlooregionrecord We are privileged to be the repository for the records relating to her early life in Woodstock. #FromTheArchives #WoodstockOntario

It’s time for #TreasureTuesday with Karen the Curator! This Thursday, March 29th, is #NationalVietnamVeteransDay and I found several artifacts relating to Johnson County Veterans and their service to our country. Did any of your loved ones serve during the Vietnam War? 1. This Aviator’s helmet and case belonged to Darrell Jagger who served in the U.S. Army during Vietnam. He was part of the 196th Support Helicopter Company, and the company received numerous awards and honors for its multi-faceted air support during the war. 2. Men’s Army Dress Green jacket that belonged to Stephen VanVleet. Stephen, a graduate of Franklin High School, was drafted Nov. 23, 1966. He spent 15 months in Korea during the Vietnam War. 3. Medal from the U.S. Army given to Gayle Talley for his military service during Vietnam War. This Service Medal was awarded to all members of the United States Armed Forces serving in Vietnam and connecting waters or airspace. 4. This small can opener was easy to carry and was used by soldiers during the Vietnam War.

Today's #TreasureTuesday is this lovely little blue bead, with etched line decoration. 🧿 ♦ 📍It was found between Porthleven and Helston, and it was recorded by one of our PAS volunteers in 2022. ♦ As singular beads are often hard to date, their findspot context is particularly important, as it can really help us to interpret the age of an object. This is why any information you can give us on your finds is so important. 🗺️ ♦ However, as it was found in the vicinity of other pre-Roman and Romano-British objects, it is probably of comparable dates. 🗡️ ♦ You can find the full database entry at: CORN-E459AD ♦ And speaking of beads, there will be some posters on Experimental Archaeology in the updated Archaeology Display at the museum - COMING SOON 😻

It's #TreasureTuesday and we're celebrating the colorful heritage of Catalina Island! Mariachi musicians and Troubadours often sported traditional sombreros at El Encanto in Avalon, originally dubbed El Paseo de El Encanto or the "Promenade of Enchantment." This vibrant locale also hosted a bustling International Marketplace, featuring strolling troubadours, magicians, puppeteers, and artisans crafting their wares.

Today is a very special #TreasureTuesday! A treasure was recently discovered in the office of County Warden Marcus Ryan, which he donated to the Archives. @marcusryanzorra This walking stick was owned by County Warden Robert Oliver, who was elected in 1932. His name is engraved on the ornate handle. Robert Oliver was a farmer and contractor in East Nissouri (now the Township of Zorra) and owned a hardware store in Thamesford, Ontario for over 30 years. Mr. Oliver represented East Nissouri Township on County Council for three years as Deputy Reeve, Reeve, and Warden. He also served on the Thamesford Village Council. It’s time for #TreasureTuesday with Karen the Curator! Today is #NationalGirlScoutDay so I searched our collection for Girl Scout Artifacts, and I found several examples to share with you! Were you or someone you know part of the Girl Scouts? 1. This Girl Scout membership card belonged to Franklin resident Connie Smith. She was part of Troop 1069 in 1969. 2. Donated by Helen Hodgen, this official Girl Scout uniform dates to the 1940s. There are 9 badges on the right sleeve, and the left has a “Franklin 2” patch. 3. 1960’s official Girl Scout canteen. These were often used alongside matching Girl Scout mess kits. 4. Part of the Girl Scout uniform until the late 1980’s, the green wool berets were worn with pride by many local Girl Scouts.
