I’m experimenting with children’s book illustration styles that have some traditional roots with some new and expressive flair. I don’t think I’ve arrived at one I really love yet, but the process of searching is always fun. My long term goal is to finally consolidate my portfolio into a few distinct yet similar styles. It’s always been very schizophrenic which makes it difficult for potential clients or agents to recognize my specialty. The idea of creating stylistic limitations for my portfolio scares me because I enjoy working in so many different ways. Part of me thinks it’s a bad idea but the advice I’ve received over the years and everything I’ve ever read says that illustrators need to specialize to find success. I’ve struggled with honing my portfolio like this my whole career. While I have had success as an illustrator, the projects I’ve done have been as inconsistent in nature as my portfolio has in style. I’d like to change that. This is going to take some self-discipline. “Smokey” - because I can’t paint more than three paintings without painting a bear one 🐻 My show in at @dogrivercoffee officially ended and has now moved to @sevenvirtuespdx on Glisan in Portland! This big guy is actually not hanging because it’s sold and is on its way to its forever home, but rest of the Mugged Series is there along with some oldies but goodies paintings. Smokey is a 36x48 painting on salvaged canvas, painted using @naturalearthpaint 's natural Acrylik binder combined with scavenged pigments from Hood River and @naturalearthpaint ‘s eco friendly titanium white

The other day my neighbor came over and noticed Maleficent, I was drying the texture blend outside, and wanted to take it as is. Long story short he asked for a Smokey the Bear piece.
