Another car from my collection is this 1984 Vauxhall Cavalier Mk2 Cabriolet. Made from 1984 to 1988 in West Germany as it was then, on behalf of Vauxhall / Opel. Based on Cavalier SRi / CDi mechanicals is quite a rare sight on British roads. A mere 1283 were imported into the UK out of a total build of approximately 3500. Manufacturing was undertaken at three locations; Hammond and Thiede, Keinath and Voll. My car was manufactured at Hammond and Thiede. The vast majority of cars were produced at H & T, about 100 cars were produced at Voll and approximately 500 were built at Keinath. These cars had a different specification to the norm and the interiors were more luxurious. Keinath is the only remaining company as the others have ceased trading, Keinath still produces specialised sports cars. The car itself was quite well built with only minor scuttle shake and drove like a front wheel drive Cavalier should. The original owner (I was the second) never specified power steering but it really did need it as its absence spoilt the driving experience somewhat. I sold it five years ago with just 40,000 miles on the clock. The beautiful power-weight ratio (1.3L~990kgs) in this petrol powered 4x4 is just legendary. No wonder why it still is the favourite in the ‘narrow’ treacherous traverse conditions for the Indian defence forces and forest services. With almost 500kgs carriage capacity, (which is almost half of its weight) it still rules the army convoys. . . . Get your hands on one, test drive it first (It’s a no-power steering car, so get used to it first) preferably soft top, rent it out for a forest/beach/snow/highway trip with an open top and @GoPro it :) . . You will get an experience like no other. And trust me, you will become a better, cautious driver. . Thanks to @marutisuzukiofficial @msarenaofficial for letting me blessed with this unique machine in 2018. Two and a half years of ownership. . The good things about this car: - You become a better driver. With No power steering, no left side mirror no air conditioning, you have to control horses, both in speed and your temper. You tend to brake early, maintain safe distances with vehicles, turn slowly with signals early due to no left mirror and never over speed, coz you know you have to control that manual steering. - 4x4 is a breeze. Take it anywhere. I literally mean anywhere, we have taken to beaches, where due to it’s lightweight (~800 kgs) it just glides away in 4L. No questions asked. Getting from any obstacle is bespoke. - Opening the soft top and driving with it rolled up gives you unfiltered Vitamin D, what everyone is copying with sunroofs today. This what they call it “wind in the hair” feeling . . The not so good things of the car: - It gives such happiness while driving that one can get married to it. So beware to get overjoyed 😁 .
