The first pocket watch with minute repeater and perpetual calendar known to have been made by Patek Philippe dates to 1874. Research shows that from 1874 to 1889, the perpetual calendar movements were all slightly different from each other as the company worked towards perfecting the complication. Consequently, no two were exactly identical. Despite this particular watch being produced in 1889, it was not retailed until 1903 per the records of Patek's Archives. Astoundingly, it's in excellent condition and retains its fitted presentation case. The exemplifier of German watchmaking, A. Lange & Söhne is best known for their finishing, complexity and design. And 2024 marks 25 years of their iconic Datograph. Its calibre L951 features a flyback chronograph with a jumping minute counter, the beautiful column wheel mechanism meticulously displayed through the sapphire display back. In fact, master watchmaker Philippe Dufour owns the pink gold version of the Datograph and describes it as the best chronograph movement ever made. The Royal Oak Offshore story begins in 1989 when a talented, young designer working for Audemars Piguet named Emmanuel Gueit introduced a sketch of a concept that re-imagined Gerald Genta's legendary Royal Oak as a larger, more substantial watch ready to tackle anything you throw at it. Upsized to 42mm when introduced at Basel in 1993, the watch was nicknamed 'The Beast' due to its staggering proportions. This watch in platinum weighs an impressive 520.95 grams and is the first of a very small edition of 7 watches of this reference ever produced in this precious material. Not only does it bear the infamous number 001, which makes it a grail watch for any serious collector, but it's also in impressive condition and comes with its original paperwork and box. This Minute Repeating Perpetual Calendar Watch is perhaps how watchmaker Franck Muller earned the moniker 'A Master of Complications.' The dial is signed 'Franck, Geneve' and a look at the case back will reveal the watch is numbered 1. As such it's that this is a very early and very complicated pre-brand wristwatch—a unique example in fact, the only one of its kind assembled in 1992. What's more, inside you'll find a stamped ‘JHP.’ To many this is a simple casemaker's stamp, but to the discerning few it has a far greater meaning. It's the mark of Jean-Pierre Hagmann, casemaker to the greatest brands and responsible for their most prized pieces such as Patek Philippe’s Star Calibre 2000. Mechanical watchmaking often blurs the line between art and science, a concept that was well understood by the esteemed Dr. George Daniels. The Millennium stands as his penultimate creation, housing the first great achievement in mechanical watchmaking in a century: the Co-Axial escapement. With less than 50 produced, the extreme scarcity and incredible workmanship of this watch places it in an extremely small camp of historic watchmaking. It's fair to say that Daniels' attempt to improve the longevity of the mechanical watch movement produced a 20th-century horological icon. This watch was made in 1999 and is one of only 47 yellow gold examples ever produced. It's offered in the #SothebysGeneva Important Watches sale on 12 May by the vendor who was heavily involved in the world of historic racing and who had a friendship with Daniels himself. Although the consignors are not the original owners, the watch comes accompanied by a Christmas card from Daniels, citing that he was pleased to learn that they had become the new owners of the A.J.H. Consigned by a highly important collector, this Patek Philippe reference 2499 second series is one of roughly 48 second series known, the second series was made between 1955 and 1964. There are only 6 known examples with Arabic indexes and only 4 of which have the mile tachymetre scale. The case was made by Wenger, which is identified with the key 1 stamped in the case back. The case retains thick lugs that are very well fluted and hallmarks towards the end of these lugs. The case is stamped with the last 3 digits of the case number inside the lugs and underneath the bezel. The movement parts bear the correct markings of the last 3 digits of the movement number. The reference 6263 exemplifies the evolution of the Rolex Daytona. Introduced in 1969, this ref retained the classic acrylic tachymeter bezel inset originally seen on ref 6241. It's enhanced with screw-down waterproof pushers and crown as opposed to the earlier pump chronograph pushers also found on ref 6239 & 6241. Rare Heuer Carrera Sunray DX To Be Auctioned by Sotheby’s - Sotheby’s has revealed that a rare example of the Heuer Carrera Sunray DX is set to become available at auction during the debut of ModaMiami — an event that will showcase roughly 50 other timepiece lots alongside a significant range of rare cars and luxury goods. Notably, this rare watch gets its name from Sunray DX, which was one of the largest oil companies in the ‘60s and a significant sponsor of automotive racing during the period. The company eventually started an autosport team in 1966, in partnership with Don Yenko, best known for the creation of the “Yenko Camaro,” a high-performance version of the Chevrolet Camaro. As for the timepiece, it was created just a year later, in 1967, specifically to celebrate Sunray DX’s L-88 Corvette-powered race team. What makes this lot even more significant is its provenance, with the seller, Gary Goss, being an original member of the Sunray DX team. Bidding for the timepiece is set to begin on February 29 and will run through March 12.
