A lot of times, after a full detail, I'm asked, "How often should I get my car detailed?". There isn't a simple answer to this question. That's one of those "It depends." There are many factors that affect how long your car will stay clean, more importantly, how long it will take before contaminants start bonding to the paint again. The contaminants can be grit, tree debris or industrial fallout (such a rail dust from nearby train tracks), that doesn't wash off with just car soap. It generally takes a clay bar to remove these things. Which is why the paint is so butter smooth after a good detail. This smooth paint helps keep future contaminants from building up as quickly, keeping your car looking cleaner longer. Regular maintenance details on a weekly, bi-weekly or monthly basis are ideal to keep the car looking its best. Of course, that's not always an option. So then we have to consider what the vehicle is used for and how it's stored. While a garage kept, weekend car may get away with an annual detail to keep it looking tip top, an outdoor kept daily driver will likely need more attention to keep the paint glossy and the contaminants to a minimum. Every 6 months or even 3 may be necessary if you'd like to keep it in great shape. Also, the longer it's let go, the more likely the car will need to be polished after being clayed. So, instead of a maintenance plus detail, it may need a full detail. The longer the paint is neglected, the longer it will take to bring back. The other big one is if it's a commuter car, going back and forth from #NYC to #thehamptons. The city has a ton of industrial fallout always raining down and tends to be VERY rough on car paint.
