hey, this one I’m calling “ace of hearts”. a passing scene of the local men of Hiriketiya (working the surf board rentals and three-wheelers). they’re often seen, playing “omi”, during the low-season, in between the usually short showers of monsoon rain. I struggled with this composition, if you swipe you’ll see a few attempts at it, before I took it on at this scale (the biggest oil pastel painting I’ve made). I’m still mixed up about it, maybe it’s just the idea, this memory of the men sitting around, in the shade of a Kottamba tree, while the sand and sea was blown out in the sun. I thought this scale would help tease out the secret intimacy, the coded, masculine, language of men at play. hey, here’s a study of “song of childhood”, drawn from memory, pastel working on paper. this is the earliest memory I can recall, of my childhood, Amma bathing me before Montessori. Or was it my aunt who lived with us for a bit or someone else entirely, the girl, who looked after us most of the day while Amma & Thatha worked? Was it Montessori or school? hey, I’m unsure if what I’m reading these days relates to this painting. this came to me sometime back, a painting by Dana Shutz burst-forth this memory of playing PC games with my brother in to my minds eye. I borrowed the composition from Dana & drew the rest from memory. reading Bell Hooks, another image forced itself as a response -to this. im trying to recall that part of the memory too. it had something to do with my neighboring kids/friends looking on as we played. our house had the second-computer-ever on our street, “progress” in our small crossroads-town. a suburb,now as Colombo city expanded & devoured the outer-district. a bounty of our parents climbing the ladder from working class to middle. contained forms of harmless violence or inspired malevolence? aid for cognitive development or conditioning of toxic masculine traits? my brother recently moved on to greener pastures, to try his luck on the ladder. Kurullangala 24"x36" Acrylic on canvas This piece was inspired by the Kurullangala prehistoric cave arts, located in the Uva Province of Sri Lanka, at an elevation of just over 1,200m. Access to the site is extremely dangerous, and requires a certain level of fitness and rock climbing experience. It is claimed to be the largest collection of rock art found in Sri Lanka to date, and depicts various types of prehistoric birds, which is why the site received its name. I was absolutely shocked to learn about it, and even more shocked to see how perfect the drawings were.
