This red-bellied woodpecker pops in and out of our maple tree and makes sure we all hear it’s there. It even drummed its beak into the metal covering of our chimney for two mornings. What if my kids don't like having their picture taken? I feel like this is maybe the most stressful aspect of deciding to book a family session, and I completely get it - I've felt this way too when booking sessions for my family, it is totally natural when we are investing in photos to want everyone to be happy and cooperative. I promise, this doesn't have to be stressful I've worked with children for years and have two kids of my own - Kids having fun and being kids doesn't intimidate me! Every kid is a little different and responds to the concept of having their picture taken differently - Some will be excited and immediately become my new best friend, some will get goofy, some will be shy and only want to snuggle with mom - That is okay, and totally normal. I want to help come alongside you and your kiddos to make the photoshoot fun and stress-free. I am good at engaging with kids and helping them to relax, but I also have some little tricks up my sleeve - From your pre-session questionnaire that helps me get to know your little ones, to the silly games I give them to do during sessions - The biggest asset though? YOU as the parent and how you interact with your child makes a huge difference in your child's experience of the session. Allow yourself to let go of expectations and enter into your child's world, meet them where they are at! If they want to snuggle, soak it up and snuggle! If they want to run and play, play with them! I'll adapt my posing to fit what's happening and give suggestions along the way. Last year, I was able to photograph a client both the Summer before and the Spring of 12th grade. Someone said, “The best thing you can spend on your kids is your time”, and that really hit home today. We’re on day 𝒕𝒘𝒐 of a good ole’ MN Spring Snowstorm, and no school due to weather. As I have to shift my priorities to ensure the kids are being cared for, I admittingly get annoyed. My days are typically designed for what I need to get accomplished while the kids are in school. But today, Sebastian needed help with his school work and I decided that was time better spent. My stuff can wait. We even played a board game together when it was all finished. What a great morning. I notice when I do family sessions how much joy it brings to the kiddos I’m photographing. If mom and dad can set their agendas and expectations aside, and just 𝒑𝒍𝒂𝒚 during the session, it’s more enjoyable and memorable for everyone. Besides, kids need our attention without the distractions of cell phones. Family sessions become a time to 𝒓𝒆𝒄𝒐𝒏𝒏𝒆𝒄𝒕. I know that it's stressful to invest in a photo session that's so important to you while feeling as if you're making a risky gamble hoping that your toddler is having a good day or that your kids don't only make goofy faces at the camera.
